THE FOG is rolling back into Hollywood. A remake of John Carpenter's creepy 1980 ghost story is in development at Revolution Studios, with screenwriter Cooper Layne (
THE CORE,
THE EMPEROR'S CLUB) writing the new screenplay. Carpenter and original
FOG producer Debra Hill are also involved as producers along with David Foster. Production is scheduled to commence next February.
Carpenter's original movie was set in the sleepy small town of Antonio Bay, and featured an ensemble of actors that included Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jenet Leigh and Hal Holbrook. The story followed the town's one hundredth anniversary and the revelation that the hamlet was founded using gold stolen from lepers whose ship crashed against the rocks outside the town when the elders turned off the lighthouse. Now, on the eve of Antonio Bay's celebrations, the ghosts of the lepers have risen from their watery grave, using a luminous fog bank to move across the water and land.
How much of the original setting, characters and premise of
THE FOG will be used for the new version is unclear at the present time.
