FORBES ranks fiction's wealthiest people

By Jennifer H. Tomooka & Mike Whybark     September 30, 2002

For those of you tired of reading about how much money Bill Gates or any other multi-billion dollar human currently has, FORBES has come up with a panacea and created a listing of fiction's wealthiest people.

The list ranges from pure lore (Santa Claus) to comic icons (Richie Rich, Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor) to literary, television and film characters (Jay Gatsby, C. Montgomery Burns and Auric Goldfinger). There is one solitary female character on the list, Disney's puppy hungry Cruella De Vil.

Although these characters are purely based in fantasy, they have become larger than life icons in our own lives, making us feel as if we can share in the wealth as easily as they do.

FORBES wealthiest fictional characters are as follows:

1. Santa Claus (Net worth: infinite)
2. Richie Rich (Net worth: $24.7 billion)
3. Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks (Net worth: $10 billion)
4. Scrooge McDuck (Net worth: $8.2 billion)
5. Thurston Howell III (Net worth: $8 billion)
6. Willie Wonka (Net worth: $8 billion)
7. Bruce Wayne (Net worth: $6.3 billion)
8. Lex Luthor (Net worth: $4.7 billion)
9. J.R. Ewing (Net worth: $2.8 billion)
10. Auric Goldfinger (Net worth: $1.2 billion)
11. C. Montgomery Burns (Net worth: $1 billion)
12. Charles Foster Kane (Net worth: $1 billion)
13. Cruella De Vil (Net worth: 875 million)
14. Gordon Gekko (Net worth: $650 million)
15. Jay Gatsby (Net worth: $600 million)
