FORBIDDEN Success for Lionsgate

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Sunday, April 20, 2008

The combination of Jet Li, Jackie Chan and a classic tale proved to the best one-two-three punch for this weekend’s audiences. Liongate’s The Forbidden Kingdom fought its way into first with an average April 20.8 mil tally. The distributor opened the film in 3,151 theaters across the nation so it accounts for an average rate of $6,623 per showing. No budget is listed.

Universal followed in 2nd place with its Judd Apatow-Jason Segel comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall. The latest Apatow film pulled in 17.3 mil, which is respectable for a “second place” haul in April. It seems clear that audiences were split between Marshall and Forbidden. With the film debuting on 2,798 theaters, it makes for an average rate of $6,200. As always, Apatow kept the budget low at 30 mil so this kind of debut is looking good for Universal.

Last week’s champion, the PG-13 rated Prom Night remake, follows in 3rd place with a 9.1 mil payday. The film is already considered a success for Sony’s Screen Gems with their budget set at only 20 mil and their domestic gross at 32.5 after only two weekends of release.

Unfortunately for Sony, they’re not celebrating the same results with their latest new release of 88 Minutes. They opened the film in a respectable 2,168 theaters and had a measly 6.8 mil haul over the weekend. This accounts for an average of $3,136 per showing.

At the same time, Fox is saying the same thing for their latest fantasy Nim’s Island. They’re certainly not enjoying the same success they did with Horton Hears a Who, the best performer of the Spring season. Nim pulled in another 5.6 mil this weekend in 5th place on its 3,277 theaters across the nation. It’s getting close to its budget line of 37 mil with its domestic gross currently at 32.8 mil.

While Sony isn’t enjoying success for its 88 Minutes, it has reached the profitable lines with its M.I.T-beats-Vegas tale of 21. The film pulled in another 5.5 mil in 6th place this weekend, which pushes its domestic gross at nearly double its budget. It was made for 35 mil and it has 69.9 mil in domestic receipts so far.

At the same time, Fox Searchlight is reaching its budget line as well with Street Kings after only 2 weeks even if its numbers isn’t awe inspiring. The crime drama managed another 4.0 mil this weekend with its domestic gross now sitting at 19.8 mil. Its budget is listed at 20.

Fox is about to double down themselves with its smash hit Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who pulling in another 3.5 mil in 8th place. While it has begun to get pulled out of theaters, it’s still showing in 2,670 prints. The studio has its budget at 85 mil and it has 144.4 mil in domestic grosses. It also has another 103.7 mil in foreign grosses.

Rocky Mountain Pictures scored big with their documentary landing in the top 10 this weekend. Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed landed in 9th place and took in 3.1 mil at the box office this weekend. Considering it was released on only 1,052 theaters, it’s not a bad haul for the small production.

And landing in 10th place is the not-so-successful Leatherheads, which looks to be leaving theaters nowhere near its budget line. The George Clooney film only managed another 3.0 mil this weekend in its 2,798 theaters, making for a 51% drop from its previous weekend. Universal set the budget at 58 mil and it has a domestic gross of only 26.5 mil after three weeks of release.

I caught Forgetting Sarah Marshall this weekend. It had some funny parts, I personally thought it would be better. Maybe it was all the promotion the flick was getting, the main cast was all over NBC on Thursady, that led me to believe it'd be much better. Anyway, I would categorize it as a wait for video flick. What pisses me off about the flick is that we got look at Segel's ass and dick but nothing on Kirsten Bell and only a picture of Mila Kunis's tits which for all I know was photoshopped. Damn, if you going to show me a man's dick then at least show me some of the good stuff from the female leads.***************This isn't an Apatow film like this article says though, I believe he only produced it. SEgel wrote it and Stoller direct it.

Yo, where is the news from all the stuff coming out of the NYC Comic Con? They showed the new Dark Knight trailer. Can we get anything on that!!!!!!!??? I'm sure it will be out with Speed Racer so you know I'll be there to see the flick. How about the rumor that JLA has been shelved or the new Hellboy poster? Come on, give us something.

hanso, that's the first semi-bad or questionable review of this film I've seen. Everyone else seems to love it and actually said it was funnier than the Apatow films............For me it was Forbidden Kingdom this weekend and was pleased with the film and not surprised that it won the weekend mostly because its wide realease and rating. I am surprised 88 Min. did that well considering it got killed by everyone who reviewed it................hanso, from what I heard that trailer was an exclusive for the con and not yet available for the public, I believe until Speed Racer. And the JLA rumor is just that. Supposedly Joel Silver was quoted as saying the film was shelved but it has only been postponed due to location. Anyway I don't think any of this is that big a deal that needs reporting, at least until confirmed.

Maybe I just build up too much expectation for the Sarah Marshall flick and it didn't live up to it. It wasn't a bad flick mind you, i just thought it would be better..........I like how we now have to create our own paragraphs :).............................Wiseguy I know some of the stuff is just rumor but since we've been pretty much gotten everything that's been going on with JLA, I thought they would have something on what Silver had said. The site has also covered movie posters so I'm surprised to see no mention of the Hellboy poster, maybe they'll put it up tommorow. As far as the Dark Knight trailer goes, they should've done an article on that, especially since there are description of the trailer popping online. Or at least some article giving the peeps a heads up that the trailer will be out soon, probably with Speed Racer. A lot of stuff went on the Comic Con, I just find it curious they haven't reported on anything, i'm sure not all the news at the NYC Comic Con is rumors. Or maybe they'll have all the stuff on friday with the rumor column, who knows.

i am very happy for jackie chan, as you know i am in china, since his last production movie over see, 80 days around the world, the guy was out of cash. That s movie was jackie chan production, cost 100 millions and get a poor 24 milions in box office. Since that time, jackie was busy to make cash, his face was everywhere, dumpling, motorbike, shampoo, cars, visa card. Today his a producer with jet li, and look like his going to make his money again.well done.....the movie will come on 24th, i will certainly go to see it.

Judd Apatow is starting to slide in the eyes of his audience. He burned them with Knocked-Up, a so called comedy that turned dramatic, and Super Bad, that was nothing but a two bit teen sex comedy from the 80s...but not as good. What happened to the Hard R content, so groundbreaking it would challenge the ratings system??? Well, so much for that...because it never appeared??? 40 Year Old Virgin was great...a true classic...but Knocked-Up and Super Bad(???)--please!!! Both films were over hyped and did not deliver the so-called revolution and evolution in the sex comedy genre. As a result, Judd Apatow's built in audience has now diminished, having been fooled and burned twice, they didn't come back for a third helping of YOU'VE BEEN DUPED SOUP. Apatow's ability to open a film big will soon be gone if he doesn't start delivering what he promises in his ads and promotions--if you are going to promise groundbreaking raunchy sex and nudity, you had better deliver it, or suffer the consequences when audiences catch onto the Bait and Switch marketing scams that you are presenting, as it appears they finally have with Apatow and crew. Judging by the box office numbers of Sarah Marshall, the damage is done, and it is too late to save this film or Apatow as a box office Brand which ticket buyers will flock to...simply based upon his name or film credits!!!

I knew he was in dire straits when I saw him in a Woolworth commercial with some muppet characters.
I didn`t get a chance to go to the movies this weekend but I`m heading to an all day matinee on Friday. Think I`ll check out Street Kings and a few others.

WOW exfan i had no idea that is what happened to jackie, if i had a job i would definitely help the cause and see kingdom in the theater and buy more jackie on dvd as long as he was director and/or producer as well as star/actor...............................anyway how about that tony jaa?

exfan • Apr 21, 2008, 02:36am •
you have nothing to worry about tony jaa, the guy is a poor farmer who was dreaming about become a Thai jackie chan. He grow up training like hell and watching jackie chan movie again and again. He moove to bangkok for a casting and when the producer see what he was capable of, he cast him rigth away. today is the biggest star in thailand, with only one movie a year. The problem is that he don t speack one word of english, so all project to go overseas are complicated. Luc besson was casting him for a transporter types movie but they give up
