I've often wondered why no one has ever made a serious attempt to film a feature around the children's book series, Tom Swift. They did the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew characters for TV, but not Tom Swift, who was my favorite of the 3.

There was something made back in 1983, which I don't recall ever seeing, but it didn't make any kind of impression on anyone.

So, who in here remembers Tom Swift, and what about turning some top talent loose for a feature film based on the character?

I have some old Tom Swift books myself and they'd make great adventure films. I would insist, however, that they maintain a retro-50s look for the setting and hardware.

Absolutely. Anything else would be ridiculous. Like trying to make him some contemporary teen with an I-Pod and emotional "issues." He needs to be the heroic and true blue character from the books in order for it to work.

I forget the name of the guy that directed Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (Kerry Conran I think) but I think he might have the sensibilities for this type of flick.
And yes, he can't have emotional issues and such. He should be as he is in the books- an heroic, young scientific genius. Man, there's a film franchise that if done right would be good competition for Harry Potter.
And they should keep the titles too, they're so solidly retro and simple:
Tom Swift and His Rocket Ship, Tom Swift and His Giant Robot, Tom Swift and His Atomic Earth Blaster, etc.
