I was talking about this over the weekend with my wife about
which movies to let the kids watch first.
We decided on the following order, with each offering shown
as they tykes get older.

Batman: The TV series (Adam West) - they can watch when they're 6 or older.
Batman Forever (Val Kilmer) - they can watch when they're 8 or older.
Batman & Robin (George Clooney) - 8 or older.
Batman (Michael Keaton) - 10 or older.
Batman Returns (Michael Keaton) - 10 or older.
Batman Begins (Christian Bale) - 11 or older.

A bit dyslexic perhaps, but it made perfect sense to me, in light of
production values, amount of goofy violence versus serious violence.
This list really comprises of starting out with the silliest version, and moves
gradually to Batman at its most serious.

Do you agree or disagree with this list?

Honestly?

Have them watch the animated "The Batman" first (age 6-8), then
"Batman:The Animated Series" (age 8-13), THEN
"Batman" (the campy tv show) (age 10-12), then
"Batman Begins" (age 12-15).

The rest are crap and should be treated as toxic waste.

I think 11 years old is too young for Batman Begins. It's a very violent movie.

Yeah. On top of all the violence you've got first- and third-person perspective of the effects of psychotic drugs, mention of people tearing each other apart in The Narrows, etc., etc. If we had a rating in the US between PG-13 and R, I think this movie should have gotten it. Part of me even thinks this should have gotten an R. It's pretty hardcore as Batman movies go.

It depends on the temperament of the 11 year old. Neglet Jr. loves action movies and has never gotten nightmares, even when he was younger. (I let him see Jurassic Park at about age 8 as a test case.) He knows the violence is made up, it's just a movie, and he enjoys explosions. I've only let him see a select few R-rated flicks, such as The Matrix/Reloaded and Blade Runner, and then only when I preview them and then watch it with him. As much as he would like to see them, he won't get to watch flicks like "Kill Bill" until he's 14 or 15. Now, if he had a different temperament--was easily scared, or went around imitating violence from tv--then I'd be more restrictive.

The funny thing is, he didn't enjoy "Batman Begins" as much as I did. I loved it; I think for him it was too emotionally sophisticated. It wasn't a simple action flick, and thus didn't appeal to him as much as a Jackie Chan movie might. But the violence depicted in BB wasn't anything he couldn't handle.

Not enough 'splosions for the little one, eh? Yeah, I guess it is a little low-key on the big money action sequences preferring to stick to the characters but I think Jr. will see in time that was a good thing.

I think you might wanna hold off on Batman Returns till the kid's a little older as well. While I agree that Batman Begins is much more emotionally sophisticated than the others, Returns is just too damn dark for a wee one. I still get chills watching the Penguin's death scene (although I gotta admit, Returns is a damn close second to Begins as my favorite Batflick. Begins is great because of its realism, and I love the comic book-esque darkness of Returns). You could probably also let the kid watch Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, I always liked that one (the series too).

Yeesh people! I said "or OLDER" at the end of each line. It's not like it was written in stone. What kinda Dad do you think I am? Believe me. I KNOW better than that. If the violence is too much, my kids ain't watchin it. Heck. Even the Power Rangers are off limits at my house. So please. Give me a little cred. :o
