From Cinescape News:

.. some others had heard that Ben has also been talking to Paramount about possibly playing a lead role in a new Star Trek film from J.J Abrams. Apparently Abrams is coming down to visit the set in a few weeks, to visit Michelle Monaghan, whom he directed in Mission : Impossible 3, so that might add some more fuel to the fire. If it comes off, he's apparently playing the hero. Don't know if that's Captain Kirk or some other nameless male protagonist...but that's the gist of it. So possible that Affleck's going to go onto doing a new Jack Ryan, and possibly a "Trek", after he finishes with this film.....

Go ahead and post your comments after you finish throwing up.

Eh, odds are I would still like his character better than Janeway.

None of those quite match the horror of a Ben Affleck as Captain Kirk.

Beyonce I could see. Orlando Bloom has already has pointed ears on his resume. Carrottop would make a most convincing alien.

How about Salma Hayek as a sexy Vulcan?

Or is it time for me to get over my Salma fixation once and for all...

Agreed. However, if Abrams decides to also cast Matt Damon and J-Lo then I'll be worried. http://messageboard.cinescape.com/cinescape/forums/images/icons/icon12.gif

It is NEVER time to get over a Salma fixation. The idea of that is just wrong! I mean your heart would have to stop beating for that to be okay!

That is SO funny how this thread has turned to rip on Will Smith.
It's like no matter how bad anyone thinks of Ben,
Will has the ability to up the hate quotient times FIVE. :smirk:
Nothing against him personally. Just his choice of roles on film.

Btw, Beyonce as Uhuru is casting BRILLIANCE. I can TOTALLY see her.
And ditto on the Salma comments: you'd practically have to physically damage yourself permanently to end the fixation. :ohwell:

For the record, I thought Smith was really good in "I, Robot." I do agree, though, that he's in no way fit for the role of Kirk. Same with Affleck. Except Affleck's last good role was in "Jersey Girl."

I liked Ben in (gulp) Daredevil. There I said it.
Yes, I really dug the flick, and thought his role in it was believable and
not so crass as other roles. I even own two DVDs of the movie, one with the theatrical release,
the other an extended director's cut. Both great, IMHO. :ohwell:

Ah, Salma Hayek.

Sigh....

My political, cultural and alcoholic tastes may change with time, but my love/lust for her will never die. I remember when she was a regular on the old "Stunning Actresses" thread we used to have at that other place. I was thinking of resurrecting one of those for over here...

Beauty and brains. And guts! I can see her doing a Star Trek role if it was substantive enough. Maybe a Vulcan-- or even a Romulan! That would suit her even more, I think.

Yeah, maybe Abrams ought to do a Ron Moore and make Spock a woman! Imagine Kirk and a female Spock having a love affair? LOL LOL LOL http://messageboard.cinescape.com/cinescape/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif

And I can think of a couple others too. Right now I'm crushing on this new singer named Rihanna (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1982597/bio) who hails from Barbados.

Absolutely ravishing:

Can she act? Well that I don't know. But she's in Bring It On 3, so that's something.

Oh, and Ashanti would be good too I suppose:

But who am I judge.

That would be an absolute atrocity, save for one redeeming feature:

Spiderr would finally pull a Major Frank Burns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_Frank_Burns) and lose it completely.

Schadenfrade, indeed. :D

Well yeah... see...

Affleck? No... Damon on the other hand I could see.

I'm not kidding. Matt Damon as James T. Kirk I could live with... kinda. I mean... I wouldn't want to go find a nice tall building or something of that sort.

At first I was thinking BEN??? But then I really thought about it. I even watched a few original episodes on DVD. Then it hit me. William Shatner was pretty bad in terms of acting on the original show. William Shatner is 100 times the actor now then he was when he was young (hence the emmy's from Boston Legal).

I think Ben is actually a pretty good fit for a young Kirk. Besides, I completely trust JJ in terms of writing and directing. I think JJ knows characters and he knows how to use what he has. I just don't think the guy is capable of screwing up the franchise anymore then B&B already have.

Damon as Kirk would work pretty well, I think.
