The theatrical cuts of the OT will be available on standard DVD (not HD or Blue-Ray) as individual 2 disc sets editions THIS September 12th. Disc 1 will be the theatrical cut in DD2.0 and Disc 2 will be the 2004 SE.

No word on extras, if any, but I wouldn't expect there'd be much.

Will it have the funky-shaded blocks around the spaceships like it did
for the first 20 years before Lucas went all CGI nutty on us? :smirk:

Yup...the undoctored original theatrical cuts. Han shoots first. Crappy Ewok song at the end of Jedi...the original Emperor in ESB. All that goodness.

This September: Original Unaltered Trilogy on DVD
May 03, 2006

http://www.starwars.com/episode-iv/release/video/img/20060503_2_sm.jpg (javascript:popExpanded('episode-iv', '/episode-iv/release/video/img/20060503_2_bg.jpg')) Fans can look forward to a September filled with classic Star Wars nostalgia, led by the premiere of LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game and the long-awaited DVD release of the original theatrical incarnations of the classic Star Wars trilogy.
In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie and, as bonus material, the theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.
See the title crawl to Star Wars before it was known as Episode IV; see the pioneering, if dated, motion control model work on the attack on the Death Star (http://www.starwars.com/databank/location/deathstar/); groove to Lapti Nek or the Ewok (http://www.starwars.com/databank/species/ewok/) Celebration song like you did when you were a kid; and yes, see Han Solo (http://www.starwars.com/databank/character/hansolo/) shoot first.
http://www.starwars.com/episode-iv/release/video/img/20060503_1_sm.jpg (javascript:popExpanded('episode-iv', '/episode-iv/release/video/img/20060503_1_bg.jpg')) This release will only be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st. International release will follow on or about the same day. Each original theatrical version will feature Dolby 2.0 Surround sound, close-captioning, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish for their U.S. release. International sound and subtitling vary by territory.
"Over the years, a truly countless number of fans have told us that they would love to see and own the original version that they remember experiencing in theaters," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts and Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm Ltd. "We returned to the Lucasfilm Archives to search exhaustively for source material that could be presented on DVD. This is something that we're very excited to be able to give to fans in response to their continuing enthusiasm for Star Wars. Topping it off with a new interactive adventure makes September 12 a red-letter day for Star Wars fans."
That's also the day fans will be able to experience the LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game, the action-packed sequel -- filled with tongue-in-cheek humor -- to one of the best selling video games of 2005. This is awesome. I didn't buy the special edition DVD's because I didn't like what I saw in the theatres. I thought I was doomed to watch the original VHS Full Screen versions forever.

That's one of my brother's favourite parts of Star Wars.

Leia: "Your friend is quite a mercenary. I wonder if he really cares about anything. Or anybody."

Luke: "I care..."

That plaintive seeking of approval is funny. It's like, "Notice me! Please!"

:D

I think I'm going to order on Amazon.com today so I don't get screwed over by some supposed underestimation of demand.

"Well, we didn't think 10 million people would want to buy it the whole time we offered it, let alone the first week so we only printed 3 million copies and that's going to be it (until we rerelease it with extras 5 years from now on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, whichever is more successful, in order to milk it again)."

I can hear the excuses already.

'Star Wars' Fans Upset About DVD Plans for Original Trilogy

Despite earlier reports that Lucasfilm would be re-releasing the original unedited theatrical versions of the first three Star Wars movies on DVD, it now turns out that they will be copied from the laserdiscs of the films released in the mid'90s, formatted for the conventional TV screen and not wide-screen "letterbox" versions. The revelation has provoked anger among Star Wars fans, expressed on such Internet sites as www.thedigitalbits.com, and www.hometheaterforum.com. VideoBusiness.com quoted Lucasfilm spokesman John Singh as saying, "We hoped that by releasing the original movies as a bonus disc, it would be a way to give the fans something that is fun. We certainly didn't want to be become a source of frustration for fans."

Hmmm... a shitty transfer in fullscreen format only so they could try to MAKE fans prefer the lame-ass SE's and they thought they wouldn't cause frustration among fans? George and Rick truly have checked out of the artistic world.

Picked up the box set today. Goddam I have waited far too long to have my own copies of these (read the original theatrical release) movies. Too bad they're done in letterbox. I guess proper anamorphic will have to wait for the HD format to be sufficiently popular that they can make a killing on that, too.
