Rock, to me, is differentiated from Rock and Roll by The Beatles. They more or less invented what I call "rock" as they took rock and roll in a new direction.
So, my list here is only including songs recorded after the Beatles came into existence.
No particular order for these
Gimme Shelter: The Rolling Stones
Burden in my Hand: Soundgarden
She Loves You: The Beatles
Black Dog: Led Zeppelin
Eat Me Alive: Judas Priest
War Pigs: Black Sabbath
Anarchy in the UK: Sex Pistols
My Generation: The Who
Private Life: Oingo Boingo
City of Angels: The Distillers
On any given day I would probably change some of these, but for today I consider these songs to be the greatest rock songs of all time, up to now of course.
Anyone have anything better?:jump2:

Subject to change without notice....
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
Guns N Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine
Neil Young - Keep on Rockin'
The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall Part II
The Eagles - Hotel California
Smashing Pumpkins - Today
Black Sabbath - War Pigs
AC/DC - You Shook me all Night Long
Rolling Stones - Sympathy For The Devil
Def Lepard - Pour Some Sugar on me
The Guess Who - American Woman
I love The Beatles but they don't have one song that sticks out as "grestest" ever. If I had to choose, I would go with "Yesterday", but it doesn't seem to fit with the rest of my list. I never cared for The Doors or The Who which explains their absence.
Some honourable mentions:
Bachman-Turner Overdrive - You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet
Incubus - Drive
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
Audioslave - Gasoline
Guns N Roses - Welcome to the Jungle

I like all the songs you chose, although I wouldn't consider most of them for my list. I notice we both had War Pigs. That song is just so freaking timeless, especially its message.
The first time I heard it was live, in 1969, at the William & Mary College gym, with Sir Lord Baltimore opening for Sabbath. My sister's boyfriend was the lighting guy for the show. When that siren started at the beginning of the song, everyone was freaked out, as we'd never heard anything at a concert like that before! There might have been 1000 people there, as the gym wasn't that big.

You know, what is interesting about your list here is that most of these songs have some historical resonance with me, as important matters occured around the time I first heard them. For example:
Immigrant Song: That was the first song Led Zeppelin played when I saw them in 1969, and that was the first concert I ever attended.
I heard all of the other songs, with the exception of "Blitzkreig Bop" and "Helter Skelter," for the first time during some important part of my life, so all of them bring back special memories for me. Interesting.

Most of the ones here may be there for nostalgic reasons:
Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf
Easy Living - Uriah Heep
Paranoid - Black Sabbath
Like A Hurricane - Neil Young
Because The Night - Patti Smith
Anarchy In The UK - Sex Pistols
Up Around The Bend - CCR
Layla - Derek & The Dominos
Kashmir - Led Zeppelin
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
On some other day, the list might include e.g. Sympathy For The Devil by the Rolling Stones, Strawberry Fields Forever by the Beatles, Close To The Edge by Yes, something by Frank Zappa or Ramones, or some other Led Zeppelin or CCR piece... There are so many great classics out there. :)
War Pigs is a great Black Sabbath song, but for me, Paranoid was the one that got me hooked on that band.

I hope to hell you're being scarcastic...
But I do like Meatloaf.
Kirk, yeah... The reasons Bliz-Bop and Helter are on that list is Bop is the most common Ramones song and they pretty much are one of the main focal points in the changing of the rock genre, and yes you could blame them for Good Charlotte & friends...
Helter Skelter is just my favorite Beatles song so it had to end up in there.

Rock and Roll Music -- The Beatles (since we're post 1964, can't go with composer Chuck Berry)
Rock and Roll -- Led Zeppelin (1971)
It's Only Rock 'n' Roll -- The Rolling Stones (1974)
Rock the Casbah -- The Clash (1977)
Old Time Rock and Roll -- Bob Seger (1978)
I Love Rock and Roll -- Joan Jett (1981)
Heart of Rock and Roll -- Huey Lewis & the News (1983)
R.O.C.K. in the USA --John Mellencamp (1985)
The House Is Rockin' --Stevie Ray Vaughan (1989)
Rockin' the Suburbs -- Ben Folds (2001)
I considered putting "Like a Rolling Stone," "Stone Cold Crazy," and "Everybody Must Get Stoned" on the list, but those aren't "ROCK" songs per se. :)

Uh, "Rock" means "not rock and roll." I was trying to stay away from rock and roll songs, and focus purely on "rock." They are not the same thing in my opinion.

Wow... that's a lot of... titles with Rock in them...
I consider Rock, upbeat Rock and Roll. Punk is not Rock... it's Punk Rock... same with Metal.
That's just me.

What? You weren't asking for the ten greatest songs with "Rock" in the title? :dunno: You need to be more specific in your definitions, then.

Just read the initial post again. However, I don't care what songs you want to post in here, as that is the point of the thread, for people to post their 10 favorite rock songs since 1964. Just because I or someone else calls something "rock," doesn't make it so.
