Another movie I'm sure everyone here knows about, but just in case . . .
This is an absolutely hysterical and brilliant send-up of films like "The Great Escape," and "Stalag 17." If you have not seen "Chicken Run," you are in for a real treat when you do.

I didn't see it in the theaters but was convinced to watch it on DVD. While it wouldn't make a difference seeing it on the big screen since it was claymation, I gotta say I regretted not having seen it sooner. Incredibly funny movie with a subtext ta boot. It's from the makers of Wallace & Grommit. If you enjoy W&G, you'll enjoy this movie. Don't hesitate! Go rent it NOW!!!

Funny you bring this up, I'm writing a profile of Nick Park right now. I was a big Wallace & Gromit fan before seeing Chicken Run, and thought the movie upheld the high standard of Park's previous work. All the sly references to older war/prison movies, as well as the sheer visual inventiveness of the animation, makes this a very fun film.
If you get the DVD, make sure to press the "Panic" button. It makes me giggle.

This is a film that works brilliantly both on a level for children and on an adult level with all the sly references to WWII prison escape movies. I saw it first because Mel Gibson was one of the voices, but have kept watching it and even own the DVD because it is simply one of the finest animated films I've seen. Too bad it was made the year before the Oscar for animated films was added to the list of awards. I do think this film helped convince them that such an award was necessary.

I presume you've seen "The Iron Giant." If you haven't, DO SO, you'll hug yourself afterwards. If you have seen it, then you know what I mean. Also, another cool animated family film that flew way under the radar is "Spirited Away," a Japanese film that is stunning and utterly brilliant. I never knew a damned dust mite could be so freaking cute! :)
