Granted, I watched the last year's season, not so much for what it wasn't,
but for what it was - campy, kitschy, and the opportunity to pick fun
at all the rock posers and wannabes. :D
This year proves more of the same.
Here's the scoop on the latest for this season:
CBS' "Rock Star" is adding Drummer Tommy Lee (Motley Crue), along with bassist Jason Newsted (Metallica) and Gilby Clarke (Guns N' Roses), are forming a new band called Supernova and will use the Mark Burnett-produced Rock Star to search for a lead singer.
Season one had the surviving members of INXS on the hunt for someone to replace the late Michael Hutchence.
Variety reports Rock Star has signed songwriter-performer Butch Walker to produce Supernova's first album, to be released just before the new band hits the road in 2007. Walker, named Rolling Stone's 2005 "hot" producer, has written or produced tracks for Avril Lavigne, Pink, Bowling for Soup and Tommy Lee.
Dave Navarro and Brooke Burke will return as hosts. Each weekly seg will also now feature guest appearances by celebs or rockers.
"Friends of mine, like Slash, Macy Gray, Moby and Rob Zombie, will join us and throw in their two cents about who should stay and who should go," Navarro said.
Yep. As far fetched an idea it would be to assume there'd be another rock
group hoping for a replacement rock star lead singer, they threw one
together in the hopes of catching that Velvet Revolver / Audioslave vibe
that's sweeping the rock stations.
I'll admit, the list of rock members are impressive, especially Jason Newsted
on bass, whom I've seen on stage when he was with Metallica.
Believe me when I say he can throw down at a level you'd think your
chest would burst.
Contrived you say? Sure it is. But that just adds to the campy fun of this
American Idol wannabe. There's NO way anyone in there right mind that
could take this show seriously. Why should this season be any different?
I mean, look at the INXS shows selling out a string of small venues.
Even the new album is doing so-so business, and only from the hard core fans
of the group that don't care who's the lead, when everyone else would
prefer to listen to the Michael Hutchence version.
But in a mindless, WWE-level that's ripe with delusions of rock grandeur,
it's fun to watch like a your favorite wrestlers bickering over a belt,
when really, the belt doesn't mean anything. The writers determine who
gets it, not the wrestler's abilities.
Though I will admit that the voting system Rock Star has SHOULD be how
American Idol does it.
RS has it that people call in to vote who they like, then those bottom three
that received the least votes are left up to the judges to decide who
stays/who goes. AI has it where the callers decide, and the judges
sit there with arms folded as to who makes it, which gives some speculation
that the voting is fixed behind the scenes to satisfy the judges anyway.
With Rock Star, the voting makes perfect sense, and should be adopted
by other I-wanna-be-a-celeb-reality voting systems.
Will Supernova succeed? I can only wonder.
The writing of their songs is such a collaborative effort, the person
that enters the contest cannot view it as just a singing contest.
It's more singer/songwriter. And if you cannot do both,
you have no business being in that contest from the start.
