Wow, Kev... this is a different type of picture than I'm used to seeing from you. Cool. Interesting character choice too.
This is an interesting pic, quite moody. And it's definitely nice to see you experimenting a bit. The background... damn, that must've taken some effort. The stars don't quite work for me... a lot of them are just 1 pixel wide white squares and would look better if they didn't stand out from the sky quite so much. Yeah, I'm nitpicking, but my eye just automatically locks onto them, and they just look sharper and more pinpointy than in real starfields. A slight gaussian blur would improve them quite a lot. Anyway, yeah, nitpicking. ;) I'll shut up now.

Pretty cool. I like the painted look of Sentry, though I think I'm with B that something with the stars is off.

Thank you both for the comments.
B, I am happy to report that the single pixel thing only applies to the nearest layer. But the blur thing,... I thought I had. Meant to. Got sidetracked by the motion thing with Sentry insofar as planning and forgot. The really annoying part was the time I sat here thinking, "There was something else I was going to do. Now what was that?" I drew a blank then, and was looking at a small enough version that it didn't click.
Since I still have the layered version I'll go back and take care of that little thing. :)
I did the rest of the starfield following the tutorial with the noise and contrast combos. I made the star factory large then shrunk it down so it wouldn't take over the pic. Then I set it about four levels back into the field.
