I'm having a problem with my Photoshop. Everytime I go to smudge, the edge extends with black and black is burred into the mix, so I've been forced to do with smudging. this has happened with ALL pictures I've been working with.
I was wondering if anyone knows how to solve this issue

i'm assuming you're smudging away from edges into the image? if so i can think of a few different things that may be happening with your smudging....
1. you have your transparent pixels locked. when you lock your transparent pixels, you are telling the computer to not let any transparent OR filled/colored pixels to change; in other words, as long as the layer is locked, you can't fill in any empty space, and you can't make any empty space with the eraser. if the layer is locked, the program will use your foreground color to fill in the spaces if you erase or smudge the edges. try unlocking the transparency, the little checkerboard icon on the layer pallette.
2. your smudge tool's strength is set to 100%, or at least very high. At 100%, whatever color you pull from, which could be black, follow the mouse the entire way until you release. try using a weaker setting.

Tried both of those with no success.... >_<

I've never heard of this one before... A couple of questions to try to isolate the cause... Is what you are smudging separated from the background? Is your layer locked with the background color set to black?
Most of what I smudge is on it's own layer, is unlocked, on a transparent backgroung, and is an active selection while I smudge.
Hopefully something here will help. Let us know what you figure out.
