Good review, I have pretty much the same thoughts about the original movie, and I read the novel as a kid, as well.

I read all the reviews, had no expectations going in, went to an eraly matinee. I knew the length of the movie....for once, absolute minimal exposition, and doesn't let up for a second. ANy longer than 100 minutes would leave you exhausted, this movie works on a completely visceral level (and no other).

And for that reason, is it a good movie? Well...not really. Not by normal standards, but for what it is, it's lean, with no fat, no camp, drops any pretenses of moralizing....some of the scenarios are pretty harrowing (elevator shaft, flash fires)....it pretty much set out what it intended to do.

Complete movie junk food.

I went with Neg Jr. on Mother's Day to a showing at the new pseudo-IMAX theater at the local googleplex. (It's bigger than regular screens, but not as big as the 10-story high IMAX--so we were a little disappointed in the size of the screen. The sound system blew us away, though!)

We went in knowing we weren't going to see a deep story about the human condition. We knew it was pure popcorn entertainment. (In fact, when Neg. Jr. saw the local paper's review--"You can't swim in cheese"--he was more enthusiastic about it than ever. He loves the "cheesy goodness" of disaster flicks, and eagerly anticipates the "10.5" sequel on NBC this month.)

So, knowing what to expect, we enjoyed what we saw: fantastic nonstop action without complications from character development. I agree with Bill: on a visceral level, the movie delivers. Of course, as a result the ending is terribly anticlimactic, and so you don't leave the theater feeling very satisfied. But while you're in there, it's a fun ride. Petersen does do good water work, and this is excellent brain candy. No nutrition, doesn't leave you feeling good afterwards, but it tastes really good while you're consuming it.

Hard to disagree with anything here. I saw it last night with a friend in a surprisingly empty theatre (which I might add, made for terribly entertaining movie snarking). It was a beautiful looking film and I'm surprised the effects were as strong as they were. I mean sure...it's an absurd and nonsensical plot with a lot of suspension of disbelief, but all the same, I liked it more then I thought I would.

The one thing I found surprising is how I didn't really hate any of the main characters like I usually do. These disaster flicks always have the group of survivors and one of them is a douche bag, but not this time.

I don't think it was worth two $9 tickets, but I'd definitely catch it during a matinee or at the dollar theatre. Stupid fun.

Minion: Wonders if anyone else in the theatre noticed how every time the main characters dove underwater, him and the girl he was with would purposely try and hold their breath as well.

I enjoyed it, but the dialogue was WEAK. kevin dillon blew an opportunity here in my opinion. and, I'm a fan of his. even before entourage.
