View Full Version : So about them gas prices...
I was meaning to mention this last week when it happened, but I forgot. Last week, our gas prices were at a low of $2.81. My mom filled up that morning, and by the evening, when she came home from work, the very same gas station had regular unleaded at $3.09. Seriously, WTF? What could possibly have happened that they could justify an almost 30 cent hike in one day?

Various environmental factors, including ambient temperature, demand, and sheer greediness. Often times gas stations will raise gas prices if their supplies are running low and a tanker isn't due until the next day so as to avoid running out.
The other stations followed suit within the next couple of days, and now the prices have been stable at $3.09 for about a week.

Hmmm...well, there is another explanation for all of this.
When Crude prices go up, the costs of producing gas goes up as well. The basic price for refining gas doesn't change, so if crude prices go up, so does the cost of refined gas. Sure, everyone is saying reserves are at their highest point in years, but how do you think they got that high? BUYING CRUDE! So with all the extra crude that gas companies were buying, they still ahve to pay to refine it, so the prices have gone up. I have noticed a general trend, though: Changes in gas prices are about 3 weeks behind changes in crude oil prices. If crude drops, expect a price drop about 3 weeks later. If crude rises, expect to see a bump immediately and then a slower tail off...

Start buying gas and storing it. I think things will get worse. I didn't think of doing that when it was much cheaper, but I am thinking about it now.

I work at a gas station, prices will only continue to get higher all summer. It'll be in the mid 3 dollar range for awhile, like, above 3.30 ^, and closer to the 4 dollar range.
Thats what the gas/oil companies are telling us behind the scene. and the Bush Administration has every part to do with the price spikes more than anything else, so Bush's speeches about trying to keep prices low and make better fuel efficiency standards are all crap, especially that bit about price gauging, which is extremely overrated and hardly present at all.

So, you think your gas is expensive?
Last time I filled the tank, the price was about € 1.35/litre.
One gallon is approx. 3.8 litres. So, a gallon would cost € 5.13.
According to today's exchange rate, 1 € = approx. 1.25 US$. So, in your currency, a gallon of gas would cost me approximately $ 6.40.
I live in a city with decent commuter connections, but you don't have to go far to find areas in this country where people are totally dependent on having a car to get simply anywhere.
Actually, you still get your gas quite cheap.

Yes, your gas is wayyyy more expensive, but a much higher percentage of your cost goes to taxes.

Y'know, I wouldn't be horribly opposed to that idea. Tax the fuck out of gasoline, do away with...say...the sales tax. SUV/Truck sales would plummet, and alternative fuel research would speed up like crazy, wouldn't it? The air would clean up, we aren't owned by the big oil companies/countries anymore, dollar rebounds....
yeah, I know I'm dreaming, I know that higher taxes would *not* be applied to gas. not in this country. and I know most of what I just said wouldn't work out.
But it sure sounds nice, doesn't it?
How much?
That depends. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gasoline_tax) See here (http://www.see-search.com/business/fuelandpetrolpriceseurope.htm) as well.
I am absolutely SHOCKED!! The gas prices either fell or stayed the same this weekend. I don't understand. This is the first year I can remember ever where the gas prices didn't go up on the first big driving weekend of the summer. Wonder how that slipped by? Hmmm, maybe because the prices are already so inflated that the companies are still making a huge profit without raising the price at the pump?

Yeah, I was going to mention this. Gas has actually dropped almost 20cents a gallon here in Dallas. Of course, we already had the highest prices in Texas, so I guess we just evened up with the rest of the state. Gas is down around 2.70/gallon for regular. I actually filled up this weekend at 2.99 for premium!

We're still sitting at $2.59/gal here, I hope it stays there or lower during my trip to Chicago later this month. The E85 here is at $2.09/gal! What kind of car do you need to fill up on that?!?
One of these (http://www.e85fuel.com/e85101/flexfuelvehicles.php). You have to remember, though, with the E85, you will get roughly 10% less mpg than with gas, so if the price of E85 gets too close to gas, then you will end up paying more per gallon. You will be doing the environment a favor, though, so if it's just a few cents either way, then I say go ethanol.

In Wisconsin, the gas companies are required to add 10% ethanol to all our gas. This is an all year thing, not just summer, when other states start using their "summer blend". I just heard on the news that oil hit $76 a barrel today and that ethanol hit $200 a barrel.

Most of the fields are already empty. The US government pays farmers to not grow certain produce when the supply goes up, keeping demand and prices high. Most farmers are just getting by. You are assuming WI farms are like CA farms, where they are basically just another corporation.

Most Americans don't know Canada is their biggest oil supplier
Last Updated Tue, 27 Jun 2006 16:01:07 EDT
CBC News
A new poll suggests the vast majority of Americans are unaware that Canada is the largest foreign supplier of crude oil to the U.S.
Canada is the biggest foreign supplier of oil and natural gas to the U.S. The Canadian American Business Council (CABC) — which represents some of the biggest private sector companies in both countries — said its survey of 1,000 Americans found that only four per cent of respondents thought Canada was the country that provided them with more oil than anyone else.
The survey also found that 41 per cent of Americans asked would support replacing oil from unstable areas of the world with oil from Canada "even if doing so resulted in higher prices for U.S. consumers."
"The findings suggest a foundation of American public support for meaningful initiatives to expand Canadian energy supplies to the U.S.," said CABC chairman Randoph Dove in a statement.
"As more and more Americans recognize Canada as a secure source of energy resources, this support should only increase," he said.
The release of this poll came just as energy-rich Alberta launched a massive lobbying effort in Washington to get across its message that Canada — and especially Alberta — has a stable and secure supply of oil that it's eager to sell the U.S.
Exhibits about Alberta and its vast oil sands deposits occupy a prominent place in this year's Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington.
That's drawn criticism from an environmental lobby group, the National Resources Defence Council, which says the industry and government-sponsored exhibits at the festival make no mention of the "devastating environmental consequences" the council says oil sands mining creates.
The survey was conducted by Vitale & Associates, who interviewed 1,000 people from June 13 to 15. It has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
Lately we've been averaging about $3.24 a gallon. It just dipped down to $3.16 in the past couple of days. Remember this past winter? After Katrina spiked prices here around $3.20, prices had dropped as low as $2.19. I actually thought for about 5 minutes that we would see $2 a gallon again. Wtf was I thinking?
