I know "Monster" isn't obscure, but how many of you have actually seen it? It is as powerful, real, raw and honest a depiction of a life you'll ever see. Aileen Wuornos is dead, now, but "Monster" takes us inside the truth, forces us to look at it, and makes us more fully aware of our surroundings. It is also a film with one of the greatest acting performances of all time, by Charlize Theron. She transcended the mere craft of acting, she redefined it. When I saw this movie I was left completely shaken, and profoundly challenged. It is easily one of the most important films of this century.

I completely agree. I have seen it, but I don't think everybody understands it. Most people I talked to before I saw it said it was simply discusting, but I watched it anyway and found it to be completely amazing. It just depicts the complete down and dirty and disgusting reality of life especially in that situation. I think Theron's performance was extraoridinary and it bothers me when people make jokes that all you have to do is look ugly for a movie and you win an oscar. That was a knock out performance and she deserved every award that she got.

I knew nothing about the movie when I went to see it. I didn't even know Charlize Theron was in it, and didn't even realize that was her I was seeing on the screen even though I saw her name on the poster outside the theater. I kept thinking, that CAN'T be her. I had the good fortune to sit down with Patty Jenkins, the director of Monster, at a Starbucks in Hollywood after the academy awards that year, and we spent a couple of hours discussing the film and Charlize (and a lot of other silly stuff). Patty said Charlize acquired her look for the film with pizza and beer. Ah, the actor's life . . . :)
