I was just wondering if anyone else remembers this gem of a movie, brought to us by the same people who did The Last Unicorn, The Hobbit, and Thundercats and starring the voices of John Ritter, James Earl Jones and James Gregory.
The Flight of Dragons tells the story of a time when man was drifting away from magic towards science and logic. The 4 most powerful wizards hold a meeting to decide what to do. Three of the brothers decide to create a closed-off realm that would allow magic to survive while still giving man influence for creativity and imagination. However, the 4th brother, Ommadon (James Earl Jones), would rather use magic to force man to choose magic or be destroyed. Unable to interfere due to a pact that forbids one wizard directly meddling with another, the green wizard Carolinus (Harry Morgan) searches through time for a hero to defeat the evil red wizard. He finds Peter (John Ritter), a 20th-century writer who believes in logic but is still very imaginative. Shortly after Peter is transported back in time, Ommadon's dragon attacks him. While trying to save him, Carolinus casts a spell that, due to his fading magic, accidentally merges Peter with Carolinus' dragon Gorbash. With a little help from the dragon Smrgol on how to be a dragon (with some very scientific explanations of how dragons can fly and breathe fire) and some friends met along the way, Peter travels to face Ommadon before the wizard can use an army of dragons to destroy mankind.
I remember seeing this on TV as a kid and loving it. It disappeared for a while, and I just remembered it recently when I saw The Last Unicorn on TV. I've looked through local video stores but have been unable to find it, finally finding several VHS copies online (apparently it's not on DVD yet :( ). If anyone else has seen this film, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
