Ok, ok, I know this is something so obvious, and I should have thought of it way before now, but at least I thought of it now.

I was checking out the BBC website and found something called "country profiles." I looked up the U.S. and read what the brief article said. It was very fair and accurate, and it suddenly occured to me that I was reading something that was not written by an American about America.

I had never actually read anything about us from the perspective of some official foreign source, like the BBC. I've spoken with many foreign people, and that is on a daily basis, but I had never actually read something from an official foreign perspective until the BBC article.

I've always thought of England as being "us" and never really considered them as a "foreign" country. Reading the BBC article reminded me that they are a foreign country, and they can look at us differently than I look at us.

So, to cut to the end, I've decided to take an internet journey of foreign press sites and media sites and see what is being said officially around the world. I think that will be fun and helpful. I'll report back about anything worth reporting back about.

I bet N. Korea and Iran hate us more than the French. Well, they probably don't hate us more, but they are willing to back up their hate. France just wants to "wave their private parts at our aunties."

I've been surprised as well as happy to find that the U.S. is discussed with respect, with honesty, and with earnestness and seriousness by the articles I looked at. Of course, it might be a lot of that "respect" is from fear. We've become the "nut with nukes." "Don't piss off the Americans, as they might just give our citizens 10,000 chest X-rays, all at once." I also think a lot of it is due to the friendship many people have with this country on a personal basis, something not related to politics. I think most of the world likes Americans, they just don't like the way our government pushes countries around. Nevertheless, my experience is that there is more positive than negative, officially, with the world's view of America, but that we've lost some humility it would be of benefit to draw upon now.

What is happening is nothing more than the old adage "power corrupts." Government is acting like a B movie villain, trying to make us believe that ends justify means. Like that has ever been true. I just have to shake my head as I watch history continue to repeat itself, and no one even notices how many "haven't we been here before?" moments happen each day.

Such as My Lai?

Such as My Lai?

That is one example of an event that has been repeated over and over and over again throughout history. I wonder if there are things destined to be repeated because what is needed to change them has a price that would have to be paid elsewhere?
