LOST - "The Hunting Party"

This episode focuses on Jack (again!) & he is just as annoying as ever. Will they ever give him a backstory that does not make him look like a self-righteous tool?

Michael goes off to find Walt, why he didn't do this earlier I have no idea. He puts Jack & Locke in a closet, ending their 50 day long hatred for each other by forcing them to confront their intense animal attract...... oh wait, that didn't really happen. I made that up.

Of course, Super!Kate wants to sit with the cool kids & attend the hunting party, but Boss-of-everyone-Jack tells her that she can't go. Of course she goes anyway.

In a later scene, Locke attempts to put Jack in his place, gently, by saying "Who are we to tell people what they can & cannot do?" Jack didn't respond, but his subtext appears to be "I am Hero!Jack! That's who!"

Upon hearing that Michael went to find Walt, Jin gets ready to join the search party. Sun protests & Jin responds with "Michael is my friend" but Sun lays the smackdown with "But I am your wife!" Jin puts down his backpack & stays with Sun. As always with Daniel & Yunjin the acting is flawless, subtle & perfect. In a later scene on the beach Jin tells Sun "I don't like being told what to do." Sun responds, "That was my life for four years. I didn't like it much either." Instead of provoking a fight this line softens Jin & he slides up to her, puts his arm around her & says "No, I imagine you didn't." Flawless, subtle, perfect.

Jack's backstory was annoying & unsurprising. Ohhhhh, he's a surgeon, ohhhhh he works crazy hours, ohhhhh your dad actually cares about you, ohhhhh a hot Italian woman wants to bang him, ohhhhh his wife cheated on him.

waaaahwaaaahwaaaaah.

In Act III things finally pick up & the Others confront Jack, Locke, & Sawyer. Zeke (which is Sawyer's affectionate nickname for the Captain Pirate of the Others) informs the Losties that the island is the Others' home & the Losties are rude interlopers (right, Zeke, because they chose to have their plane crash on an unknown island). Zeke told the Losties that as long as they didn't cross "this line" he & his Others would leave them alone. Of course, Jack had to be a smartass control freak & refuse. So the Others' captured Super!Kate & threatened to shoot her unless the Losties handed over their weapons. After some serious staring & very deep thoughts Jack handed over his weapons.

Kate apologized to Jack for tagging along but I-am-in-charge-Jack gave her the silent treatment.

The episode ended with Jack asking AnaLucia about her work as a police officer. The last line of the show is "How long do you think it would take to train an army?"

WTF? Jack, Jack do you realize that Ana was a COP, she wasn't in an army. But Sayid WAS in an army, maybe you should ask him? Sure, ask Ana to help, that makes sense, but the one you really want to take this to is the guy who was actually in a freakin' army!!!

As to the question mark next to the title of the thread, well, I can't decide if I liked this episode or not. Jack still bugs me, Kate still annoys me, but I love Locke & I love that there was some development with the Others. And oh yes, I adore Jin/Sun.

DISCUSS!

I kinda agree, The only thing we know so far is Sayid wasn't a infantry type of soldier he was a tech guy. I don't know how well that would serve him in the training of Troops. Also since Locke likes playing Risk he may be the best Field General......Oh god these people are doomed.

I thought this episode was pretty solid.

As I posted elsewhere, I wasn't too surprised by Jack's wife leaving him. I always thought that the whole affair was sort of a 'Florence Nightingale' type thing. Some people are asking why Jack was so upset when he seemed indifferent to Sarah. I think it's part of Jack's win/never surrender personality.

I got goosebumps when Zeke told them to light em up and all the torches flared. Think the hunting party had a collective 'Oh ****!' moment there? :)

Oh, come on. I was so pissed that they had a pow-wow with the Others, and no one asked any substantive questions. WTF?!

BTW, sis, call her AnaL.

This is one of the reasons why I cannot stand Jack. I think Zeke would have answered some questions, albeit vaguely. He said he wanted to have "a talk." But all Jack could do was play the asshat. He should have said "We don't like being on your island any more than you want us here." Instead of further instigating the situation he could have attempted to diffuse it by remaining calm & asking questions. Do the Others know about the Dharma Corp? Is the button pointless? And then there's the freakin' obvious question of "Why did you take Walt?" And if Jack was so concerned about Michael why didn't he ask "Will you let us find Michael so we can take him home?" Nope, he couldn't do any of those things because he is a supreme asshat.

Had Sayid been there the situation would have been a lot different. He would have been level-headed enough to remain calm & ask solid questions. Odds are they wouldn't have received sufficient answers, but Sayid is trained in torture, so I'm certain he knows how to read a person. He'd be able to glean something from Zeke's response (or non-response).

But, of course, the writers have to shove it down our throats that Jack is so flawed & tries his hardest & we should all just feel bad for the poor sap.

I'm moderately surprised that Locke didn't say anything either, though. All Sawyer was doing was fuming, so I buy that, but Locke?!

Yeah, Jack's an asshat^2.

I also found it weird that Locke didn't say anything. It didn't seem to fit in with his character at all. I've still got this episode on TiVo, so I'm going to watch it a second time and chime back in wit' y'all.

I'm guessing that Boss Other knows something about the Initiative because the quote he cited is on www.thehansofoundation.org and is by Alvar Hanso, founder of the Foundation, which in turn funded the Initiative.
