I bring this one up because I've always felt it wasn't appreciated enough by critics and audiences. It is a truly entertaining and awe-inspiring look at the universe, and a fitting tribute to Carl Sagan. This is one of those movies I can watch over and over again without getting tired of it.

Agreed. Very hopeful and intelligent. Also, one of those deep thought movies that award a long attention span.
And that backup into space/regressing signals thing at the beginning of the film, outstanding.
This is one of those movies that I didn't appreciate upon first viewing. After watching it the second and third times, I really like it.

I liked this one the first time I saw it--but then, it's got science and Jodie Foster, so that was pretty much a given.

This one must be one of my all-time favourite scifi movies.

I'm sorry, I didn't like this movie. I watched it, and thought the premise was very interesting. However, there were several things I didn't like about it.
First, Jodie Foster's breathless, almost crying way of delivering her dialogue gets on my nerve. She reminds me of Chris Klein's way of acting, which also drives me nuts.
Second of all, I really didn't like when they start to get all the religious flack. Of course, looking at the government in power today, maybe it isn't such a stretch. But I remember thinking that it was none of religion's business. This was a purely scientific matter. They should have NO freaking say in this exploration.
I also didn't like the exploration much. Why was her father there? Did she hallucinate? What really happened while she was gone? I guess there was just too many unanswered questions.
I didn't like this movie much, and haven't watched it again since I saw it years ago, so my recollections might be hazy/wrong/off-base, but that's the impression I have of this movie.
