I'm going to go ahead and put it up here in case some of the old guard are still around or remember him. Monic has just informed me of someone who was a friend on my messengers and in my life passing away last week.

It's been about 3 weeks since I last talked to him on msn or yahoo and I've been so very busy with life and work the past year, we haven't talked as much as we should have.

Aaron Smith(GodzillaNews) was the former Administrator of the boards as well as News Article contributor to Cinescape.com in the late 90s to early 00s. He has created many sites, including the popular Monster Zero site for Toho Godzilla fans. He paved the way for the boards being updated back in 02 and he helped shaped alot of other sites and boards elsewhere online. He certainly left a mark with alot of people, including me.

He was a friend. I was there with him on messenger after his mom died last year and I will never forget that night, hours of trying to cope someone through such a significant loss. He was a friend and right now, upon hearing these news, I am at a loss for words.

Here is the article posted at MZ:

It is with a heavy heart and much sadness that the staff of Monster Zero must announce the unexpected passing of MZ co-founder and owner, Aaron Smith. Aaron passed away on Tuesday evening after a major cardiac arrest. He had been in the hospital over the weekend due to ongoing complications arising from an injury he suffered a few months ago. It appeared by Monday that he was out of the woods but, according to his family, Tuesday's heart attack was massive and quick, and nothing could be done.

This is a terrible loss and surprise for his family, all of us here at MZ, and indeed the entire community of Godzilla fandom. As you know, Aaron was extremely excited to share the 9th Anniversary of the site, and despite his recent health problems, was still making an effort to keep the news and the discussion up-to-date. His mother passed away a year ago after her own long illness in his care, and Godzilla fandom, collecting and MZ were the things that kept him going through the hard times.

Aaron is survived by brother Eric and sister Maria. The family is having a private memorial.

I realize alot of you do not know who this man is, since you came from CA or afterwards but the older guard from here might remember him. They should at least be informed that he passed away.

I don't know what else to say.

Jerrod, I also knew Aaron Smith, and we emailed with each other quite frequently, but the last one I got from him was right after his mother passed away. I emailed him back, but never heard from him again, he was so grief stricken. I went to his website Monster Zero a few days ago, and saw the headline a couple days afterward....

...He was extremely dedicated to the site, and the kaiju fandom is one full of vicous and petty young fans, who thought nothing of trashing each other and Aaron as well. I applaud his running a tight ship at Monster Zero. WHile many of the other kaiju forums have imploded or struggle on lamely, MZ's site is one of less than a handful that remain strong.

Yeah, I'm a little at loss for words as well. :(

He was a friend of the past 8 years. Although, we never met in person, we talked hours on MSN about television shows and personal happiness/problems. He liked to tease me about my Canadian origin and even more about my French Canadian origin. He will be deeply missed. :(

I'm also at loss for words... just crying.

I only knew the man by reputation, and am saddened to hear of his passing. My condolences to the family and friends, both online and offline.

:(

I didn't know him, but any representative of fandom, especially any with a public voice, it's sad to lose one.
