Stolen VA data may have been erased (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060609/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/vets_data_theft)

Are you kidding me? And here's the kicker, emphasis highlighted by moi:

"In testimony to Congress, Nicholson accepted responsibility for the May 3 burglary at a VA data analyst's home. He said the agency remains vulnerable to other security lapses and that changes won't happen overnight."

Uh, I have an idea for a change that probably could happen overnight:
how about driving those PCs over to a government secure building?
How long should that take Sherlock? An hour? Fifteen minutes?
And what the hell is such sensitive, extensive and crucial data doing
at somebody's house? I'm all for telecommuting and working from home,
but damn. The level of irresponsibility, bad protocol and poor info management is outright appalling, and very disconcerting.
It disturbs me to think that such information was just sitting there
in some government employee's living room or den, information
several million families needed for what little care from the government
they get from to start with, but need regardless.
This is beyond stupid. It's careless at an exponential level.
To call this a lapse in security is a complete joke.
It's not a lapse. It wasn't there at ALL.
I have family in Puerto Rico still needing attention and care
for their service in World War II in the Pacific Theater.
How much you wanna bet this will screw them over,
let alone my cousin that served in Iraq last year and lost 40%
of his hearing permantently due to a bomb attack?
Totally outrageous. :angry
