I like it when things blow up real good. :D

Record meteorite hit Norway (http://www.aftenposten.no/english/local/article1346411.ece)

As Wednesday morning dawned, northern Norway was hit with an impact comparable to the atomic bomb used on Hiroshima.
Peter Bruvold witnessed the meteorite streaking across the night sky.

At around 2:05 a.m. on Wednesday, residents of the northern part of Troms and the western areas of Finnmark could clearly see a ball of fire taking several seconds to travel across the sky.

A few minutes later an impact could be heard and geophysics and seismology research foundation NORSAR registered a powerful sound and seismic disturbances at 02:13.25 a.m. at their station in Karasjok.

Farmer Peter Bruvold was out on his farm in Lyngseidet with a camera because his mare Virika was about to foal for the first time.

"I saw a brilliant flash of light in the sky, and this became a light with a tail of smoke," Bruvold told Aftenposten.no. He photographed the object and then continued to tend to his animals when he heard an enormous crash.

"I heard the bang seven minutes later. It sounded like when you set off a solid charge of dynamite a kilometer (0.62 miles) away," Bruvold said.

Astronomers were excited by the news.

"There were ground tremors, a house shook and a curtain was blown into the house," Norway's best known astronomer Knut Jørgen Røed Ødegaard told Aftenposten.no.

Røed Ødegaard said the meteorite was visible to an area of several hundred kilometers despite the brightness of the midnight sunlit summer sky. The meteorite hit a mountainside in Reisadalen in North Troms.

"This is simply exceptional. I cannot imagine that we have had such a powerful meteorite impact in Norway in modern times. If the meteorite was as large as it seems to have been, we can compare it to the Hiroshima bomb. Of course the meteorite is not radioactive, but in explosive force we may be able to compare it to the (atomic) bomb," Røed Ødegaard said.

The astronomer believes the meteorite was a giant rock and probably the largest known to have struck Norway.

"The record was the Alta meteorite that landed in 1904. That one was 90 kilos (198 lbs) but we think the meteorite that landed Wednesday was considerably larger," Røed Ødegaard said, and urged members of the public who saw the object or may have found remnants to contact the Institute of Astrophysics.

To quote Chickenlittle-Spock, "The sky is, indeed, falling."

:)

What scares me is if a big enough rock were to hit some population center somewhere, a country might think they were attacked and retaliate against their perceived attacker as a knee-jerk response . . .

Yeah, because we all know that nuclear blasts come with no radiation.

Please.

And your comment is related to my fear exactly how? Perhaps you didn't understand what I said very clearly? Do the words "knee-jerk response" and "might think they were attacked" generate any neural activity inside your skull?

Is it really necessary to explain every little thing so that people will understand something simple? Let me 'splain it to you with this clear example of my meaning:

Big Rock Hit Tehran. Iran Launch missiles at Israel and/or other target(s).
Iran not know Tehran not nuked, just know it gone in big boom. Make choice to kill enemy first. Find out blow up not nuke later.

Gentlemen, gentlemen.

This thread was intended to be a light-hearted discussion about big rocks from outer space blasting the bejeezus out of everything on Earth. And you're turning it into yet another political thread.

I shall say good day to you, sirs. :romy:

Sorry, dude, but that's still over-reactionary thinking.

Oh, and for the record, anyone that actually knows how to read knows that Iran is roughly at least a decade or more away from having any fissionable material in quantities enough to make a single bomb. Try looking it up.

But let's take your totally rational response  to this as a fact. Let's pretend that a country that has nuclear capability doesn't have the technology to also have something like, I don't know, radar. Let's pretend that every country that isn't the U.S., barely has the technology to make ice cubes. Why? Because everyone that disagrees with the U.S. must be a backwards, backwater country with little to no technology and even less brains to use any technology that may find its way into their hands.

Dude, at least try to sober up between bong hits and posting.

It might help you with those paranoia problems, and the visions of giant bees.

(I read your PM, so don't take this the wrong way) . . .

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!

I said, "WITH THIS CLEAR EXAMPLE OF MY MEANING."
Keyword: E X A M P L E.

It could be any country, retaliating against any country, and I NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT NUCLEAR RETALIATION.

Why are you arguing with me? I stated very clearly that it was MY FEAR that a meteor strike could be mistaken as an attack and generate a retaliation. I never mentioned any countries, because it isn't important. The subject of my remark was MY FEAR.
