List them here! Since the thread's purpose is discussion related to the endings of various movies, please list the films you are going to mention first, without comment. That way anyone who hasn't seen that movie and doesn't want to know the ending can avoid reading what you say about it.

Here are the film's whose endings I will talk about:
Animal House
War of the Roses
The Game
Crimen Ferpecto

So, please list yours, or talk about any you want. I want to see if there are any cool endings I don't know about out there!

Animal House: The mother of all great endings, one that worked on so many levels and virtually defined a generation. When "The Deathmobile" came out of the smoke, it all became clear. And . . . Senator and Mrs. John Blutarsky, Washington D.C. . . . :)

War of the Roses: Perhaps the most bitterly ironic ending ever. In death, she still flicks his hand away. Just brilliant.

The Game: Truly inspired, a creative leap if I've ever seen one. The implications seem to have been missed by most, but think about it.

Crimen Ferpecto: Absolutely the most perfect ending to any movie I think I've ever seen. Everything came out the way it should have, but you didn't know that until it was over.

I've always liked John Carpenter's The Thing ending. I liked NOT knowing if Childs was an alien host ready to get MacCready or if they made it out or if they both just froze to death after all that shit they went through...

I liked The Thing's ending, too.

The Devil's Advocate
Basic
X-Men 3
Heathers
Witches of Eastwick

I liked that the devil started over with a different tactic. He knew he'd get him eventually.

I like when you are trying to figure out a mystery, everything you thought you knew was wrong. It was great the first time I saw the movie, then I really paid attention in subsequent viewings to make sure I caught all the hints.

Won't discuss it here, but thanks DaForce.

What goes around comes around. Plus, it was cute to see Winona Ryder looking like a badass.

The girls got the upper hand, but Jack was still there.

"The Usual Suspects" always comes to mind when I think of great endings. I still feel like slapping myself for missing the obvious.

"Frailty" was done well, I thought.

"Boogie Nights", I did not see that coming.

"The Sixth Sense" had one of the all time greatest. I missed it in theatre so I lived in a cave for months to avoid any spoiler material. Well worth it.

The Professional, this one is effing killer. It's been copied in one form or another but no one does it better than Reno and Besson. Excellant movie all around, btw.

Shawshank and Momento have superior endings aswell.

My personal favorite of all time: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. As a HUGE fan of the series at the time, I had been waiting for it through the whole movie.

Splinter: "I...have always liked...Cowabunga."

All 4 Turtles, in unison, slap hands in the air..."COWABUNGAAAA!!!!"

The best. EVER. :D

"October Sky". On an emotional level, it works amazingly well. Everytime we get to the bit where Jake Gyllenhaal's character, Homer, is giving the speech where he's thanking everybody, and his dad (Chris Cooper) steps forward just as his son mentions him... always gets to me.

And then that's followed by the bit where his dad puts his hand on his shoulder as the rocket flies into the air. Beautiful stuff.

I'd have to agree on the October Sky ending cause of its emotional culmination after so much frustration between those characters.

And ON that note, I'm also mentioning Field of Dreams.

I get choked up no matter how many times I watch it for October Sky and Field of Dreams because of the emotional moment between father and son.

I also really liked Saw's ending. Yes, I'm well aware that the Killers getting away is becoming just as cliche as the good guys saving the day before it ends but I think the ending of Saw comes across very very well with him lying in the darkness screaming as Jigsaw screams "Game over".

The ending of Xmen3 made me want to jump up and pump my fist in the air. Yeah baby! You can't keep a good Evil Mutant down!

I finally saw "October Sky" a few weeks ago, and I'd agree that's a great emotional ending.

One for sheer twist value that no one's mentioned yet is "No Way Out." That's another flick, like "Sixth Sense" or "Usual Suspects," that is completely different on second viewing.

I can't believe no one has mentioned this....after all The Usual Suspects was here.

The Natural The music, the lights, the slo mo running around the bases in the dark.

Shawshank No words, just Red walking up the beach to see his friend.

ST:WOK Spock's Funeral and his voice over.

Back to the Future Nothing made me want a sequel more in 1985. Too bad I had to wait.

For me there is one ending that is the best: THE GODFATHER. It doesn't have that emotionally uplifting music or an epic final scene but rather presents it subtly as Kay, the loyal wife of Michael Corleone, realizes that her husband has indeed lied to her about the killing of his brother-in-law Carlo- the stark emptiness of the scene as she sees Vito's lieutenants swear an oath of fealty to her husband as she is left alone out in the drawing room as the room is closed around her is more powerful than any other movie ending I could remember. A brilliant ending to an awesome movie.

October Sky is a freaking awesome story and features great performances by Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Cooper. I damn near shed a tear at the end.

Laura Dern put on a pretty good performance if I remember correctly, too.

And it's a kickass movie for focusing on physics.

Here's a few not yet mentioned...

The Right Stuff-The end, with Gordon Cooper's Mercury rocket heading into the sky, the sun glaring off his helmet and huge grin. "At that moment in time, Gordon Cooper flew higher and faster than any man had ever done before."

Empire Strikes Back-Lando and Chewie loading up into the Falcon to head out to set into motion Han's rescue, with Luke and Leia watching them go. I so couldn't wait to see how it went on.

Superman The Movie-Christopher Reeve so supremely capturing Supe's joy in flying.

Free Enterprise-William Shatner rapping Julius Ceaser. Need I say more?

Apocalypse Now-The horror...

Fellowship of the Ring-Frodo admitting he's glad his best friend Sam is with him as they stare across a field of volcanic rock towards Mordor.

I love the ending to "50 First Dates" mainly because they don't punk out and have Lucy get cured of her condition. I thought this was Sandler's best film and a great love story.

I have to agree with The Shawshank Redemption. Also:

Cast Away
Unbreakable
Heat

Cast Away leaves me with a great sense of adventure, a thrill, as a man is about to start his life over again and all he has to do is choose a direction.

Unbreakable's ending suddenly changes Sam Jackson's character from mentor to villain. And what makes it even better is that he has only just discovered that he is the villain himself. "They call me Mr. Glass." I think it's brilliant.

Heat's showdown between Pacino and DeNiro ends with DeNiro's Neil bleeding to death and clasping hands in a strange sign of brotherhood with Pacino's Vincent. In the background L.A. rages away and the audience knows Vincent's job is only over for this night. (Can't wait for Miama Vice.)

You know, I hadn't thought about Cast Away for this list because it hadn't really been on my mind lately, but I love it for exactly the same reason you gave. Really, it's one of the best endings in modern movie history, maybe all of movie history.

The end of the 1980 Flash Gordon movie. You see the little pile of dust that's left of Ming the Merciless. You see a hand reaching for Ming's ring, the sound of it being activated, and Ming's laugh in the distance.

"The End?"

Cue baddass Queen drums and guitars.

This movie is a guilty pleasure, but oh, what a pleasure it is.

I wouldn't go that far.

The ending is enjoyable and gives a lot to think about but it's not nearly as effective as it should have been. The spoiler ridden trailer removed a lot of the suspence for me. Zemeckis made sure we knew Hanks was getting off the island so there was no real dilemma about his survival. The only believable tension the story offered was the whole "what now" idea, which is a good one, but not something I want to ponder months in advance during a preview.

Ornella
Muti

She fits the description of "my type."

I still think about her to this day, from time to time.

"Aliens" when Ripley finally gets some peaceful sleep.

"This Boy's Life" when things finally look up for Toby and his mom.

"The Color Purple" needs no explanation.

"Dark City" 'cause what else was he gonna do? There was no better option.

"This Boy's Life" - "That was it. We just got up left. You can dream of a moment for years and still somehow miss it when it comes. Gotta reach through the flames and grab it. Or lose it forever. I took mine. So did my mother. We never looked back."

"Beaches" - "You'll be sure and write, won't you C.C.?"/ Sure. We're friends, arent' we?"

I always like the ending of Armageddon. The montage of Harry's last thoughts, the shuttle pilot saluting Grace, the pictures of the dead guys in the front row at the wedding. It always makes me misty-eyed. :ohwell:

I like the ending battle scene in EP1:PM. John Williams score, the lightsaber duels, the space battle. They are just seem to work and sweep me along with the excitement.
