Yahoo!'s The Insider reports that J.J. Abrams is very interested in casting Matt Damon as Captain Kirk in his upcoming STAR TREK Movie.

Marc S. Malkin of The Insider writes, "Will MATT DAMON get beamed up? Could happen. I'm told J.J. ABRAMS is very interested in casting the Oscar-winning Damon as a young Captain Kirk in the upcoming 'Star Trek' movie that he's directing and producing. He's so interested that he's apparently already sought support from the original Kirk, WILLIAM SHATNER. "Shatner gave his blessing," my source says. "J.J. got his approval." Damon first popped up in Trekkie circles as soon as the Abrams-'Star Trek' deal was announced. Rumor had it that the new movie would center on Kirk and Spock's early days at a space academy. "J.J. wants Damon as Capt. Kirk," my source reports. "He really loves the idea."

This is of course, all unsubstantiated. Time will tell.

I read that last night on a couple of sites.

As you say, its all unsubstantiated. It really sounds like just a internet rumor.

At the very least, it's alittle too crazy for me to believe this storyline is actually being considered.

The part I find most humorous is that they're talking about Damon playing a "young" Kirk. Has it occurred to anyone that Damon is now only a year or two shy of Shatner's age when he originated the role in 1966?

It occured to me. Matt Damon is a great actor. But he's too old to play a younger Kirk.

TOS-era Kirk; I could see Matt Damon. Definitely.

But for the Academy Kirk you need a young unknown.

Exactly. And Damon is probably the only person who wouldn't get the fires of hell from me for trying to step into The Shat's shoes in a TOS era retelling or a fill-in for the time between the series and the movie.

Academy Kirk has to be to The Shat what Brandon Routh is to Christopher Reeve.

Academy Days sounds like a bad idea. Something Berman would do. Actually, it is something Berman did only Paramount called it
"Enterprise."
Since there is no purity left in the Star Trek franchise, a new, darker direction
sounds appealing. The story line could move in the direction of the Section 31 novel series. With that theme, the studio could build a new audience and still keep old fans happy - similar to what BSG has done for the Galactic franchise.
Here's a cool link to the Section 31 universe. Enjoy. N :)

I don't know seems kinda bogus?

I couldn't see a big star in that role / much like the role Superman you need an talented unknown . . .

Further, you cast a big, in demand star in that role, you are painting yourself in a corner. Just how many films can you make with Damon?

I can see him doing it, but for the long term series, not the best choice.

Shatner is apparently pissed off that HE isn't playing younger Kirk.

I just read that.
