I kind of want to see this movie, but I had a feeling I was going to be disappointed somehow by this, at least in the depth department.
The Wachowski Brothers are at a poor ratio for projects they are involved with that I actually like (this taken from wikipedia):
Filmography
* Assassins (1995) (story, screenplay credits)
* Bound (1996) (written and directed, executive producers)
* The Matrix (1999) (written and directed, executive producers)
* The Matrix Reloaded (2003) (written and directed, executive producers)
* The Matrix Revolutions (2003) (written and directed, executive producers)
* The Animatrix (2003) (producers, wrote four of the nine animated shorts)
* V for Vendetta (2006) (produced and written, based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and David Lloyd)
* The Invasion (2007) (rewritten various parts and added a twist ending)
* Speed Racer (May 2008) (written and directed, based on the Speed Racer anime)
There are only 2 movies on there that I find decent: The Matrix and V for Vendetta. As for Speed Racer? We shall see, but I'm going in with no expectations.

Hey shouldn't this be over at Cartoons2Film?
I had a feeling this would be all style no substance. Looks like I'll be skipping it.
Bound is a very good modern-day noir.

I agree that V for Vendetta and Matrix were the only excellent movies of the Wachowski Brothers. Speed Racer looks as if it's only optics, null substance. And for the most ones, who are older than ten, even the optics are rather hard to handle.
In addition it doesn't seems to be that smart to release it one week after the start of Iron Man, when all the guys go to theater, who were busy playing GTA IV last weekend. It might rather get difficult for Speed Racer to reach the projected $30 million this weekend.
Anyway, the project is interesting enough to give it at least the chance to prove that the own apprehensions were justified.

The sad thing is, you can tell there is the intention that the movie have some substance.
Like I said in the review, I think a lot of Americans (in particular) feel like the game is rigged to favor those in power, and there's little to inspire us. 'Speed Racer' wants to make a nice metaphor for all that.
It's just so plodding and indulgent that the metaphor gets lost. It's stated (in grand expanses of dialogue), but not really felt (as it should be).
I love The Matrix, V, and Bound. I really want to see the Wachowskis make great movies. I think maybe they need someone to reign them in a bit.
But please, everyone go see the movie and tell me how wrong I am right here! :peace:
