Saw this one last night. I initially wasn't going to see it because the premise looked stupid, and Sandler hasn't really been making movies that I have wanted see for about the last 5 years now. What changed my mind? I read a review in the local paper that gave the movie a glowing review. The reviewer hates Sandler with the passion of a thousand suns, so to give the movie a great rating AND calling it the best movie of the year so far was quite a stretch for that reviewer.
Anyway, on to the review.... I liked this movie, a lot. It has comedy, sympathy, a few life lessons, and Christopher Walken doing what he does best. Very well done. It was definitely something that surprised me considering that I found it to be much more enjoyable than Superman Returns. Very strange.
Sandler doesn't do his wacky routine here, instead he plays more of the smart-ass wisecracker that we've seen before. Beckinsale does a great job as his wife, and Sean Astin...god, he almost steals a few of the 'brief' scenes he's in. But the man that does it all is Walken. He has a line in the movie about Lucky Charms and cornflakes that rivals the Toothfairy monologe he did in the "Rundown". Brilliant.
Rating: Full price ticket.
