...my computer got Trojaned today really, really badly. Two of the main culprits, taskdir~.exe and users32.exe. Those two little bastards came in and started hiding in my registry keys, etc and then started duplicating about 200+ bastardized offspring. So, I paid for and downloaded McAfee.

That did absolutely nothing. I was then trying out freeware like a madman with about the same results. Then my friend who came over and works in IT, suggested that I download something called Windows Defender (through MicroSoft).

Five minutes later, my comp is clean and protected. Just an FYI for anyone else out there having the same problems, download Windows Defender.

Yeah I had to download that about two weeks ago and I've had little problems with my computer since then.

If you worry about whether those buggers are still there, Norton Ghost is a nice option too. It doesn't clean your system. It restores it to a point in the past. I had an extra hard drive, so I got an external case. With my USB 2.0 link, I ghost my system weekly. Something nasty like that comes around, it's an option I can consider. Also, if you accidently delete a file, you can go into your backups and restore it, good as new.

PCWorld's test of top security suites (http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,125857,00.asp)

Now, did you download all of it, or just the virus scanner? Since spyware/malware is slightly different, it might not have found it.

Personally, I use Webroot Spysweeper, Spybot S&D, and Microsoft's Windows Defender. Unfortunately, it requires SP2 so I can't run it on my work machine.
