Ok, so we've got a lot of lists here. How about we try to make a consensus of our favorite film in each genre (that's "favorite", not necessarily "best", though people usually feel their' fav is the best). There's a list of the general film genres below, you list what your favorite film in each genre is, and we'll see if we can't make our own "Tops" list. Savvy?

Action/Adventure - Raiders of the Lost Ark
Drama - Giant
Comedy - Young Frankenstein
Sci-Fi - The Fifth Element
Horror - Halloween
Fantasy - Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Western - Tombstone
Musical - Singin' in the Rain
Mystery (Suspense/Thriller) - Rear Window
Crime (Film Noir/Gangster) - The Maltese Falcon
Comic Book/Graphic Novel - Batman Returns
Animated - Akira
Foreign (non-English) - (Tie) Nights of Cabiria (Italy) or Afterlife (Japan)
War - Platoon

Granted, most of these genres are usually merged with another one, but try and pick a film for each genre that is mainly that type.

What a guy. You left out Romantic Comedy as a genre! I'd also argue for Comic Book/Superhero to get its own category. For some of these categories I haven't seen many films, but I'll give it a try:

Action/Adventure - Raiders of the Lost Ark
Drama - Sense and Sensibility
Comedy - tie: Holy Grail, Blazing Saddles
Sci-Fi - The Matrix (original, not crap sequels)
Horror - Aliens
Fantasy - Lord of the Rings
Western - Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Musical - West Side Story (Chicago a close 2nd)
Mystery (Suspense/Thriller) - Dead Again
Crime (Film Noir/Gangster) - The Usual Suspects
Animated - The Lion King
Foreign (non-English) - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
War - Das Boot
Romance/Romantic Comedy - Bridget Jones's Diary
Superhero - Spiderman

Ok, so maybe we could throw in a Comic Book film genre (to include graphic novels as well). As for Romantic comedy, I'd still put that under comedy. And you'd consider Aliens more horror than sci-fi (hell, or even action)?

Horror is one of those genres I don't sample very often (Sixth Sense and Silence of the Lambs are the closest I've come in the last 20 years). And since I spent half of Aliens with my face in my husband's shoulder--yes, I consider it horror, although horror in a sci fi setting.
