Many Palestinian civilians have been killed, and will be killed in the shelling and bombing going on.

But it's all unintentional of course.

Besides, they're defending themselves! Don't you know that?! What's the matter with you?

Yup, this all started with Israel abducting three Palestinians, and Palestine retaliating by abducting a 19yr. old Israeli soldier.

Israel is trying to to put pressure on Hamas to ratify a portion of the agreement signed last week. The portion they want ratified is the area that has Palestine acknowledging Israel as a country. :dunno:

Very fucking stupid if ask me.

The moderates within Hamas were willing to consider recognizing Israel within the 1967 borders. They as much as said so in a visit to Russia shortly after their election. The extremists, of course, aren't having any of it.

By taking this action, Israel will effectively strengthen the hand of the extremists and further jeopardize their own security, justifying more reprisals.

And to think, I actually held out some hope that Olmert would steer the country in a pragmatic direction.

Naive I was, indeed.

What interests do extremists on both sides have in peace?

That's my point. This is all following a pattern.

The only way the US, Israel or anyone else is going to deal with Militant Islam, or extremism in general is by acknowledging that it is a product of real issues concerning real people.

All the shells, bombs and missiles in the world won't knock down an idea whose time has come.

Why break the pattern? They don't want peace.

Extremists? No, certainly not. But the Israelis are by far the greater aggressors.

It's as if Israel wanted to destroy the moderate-extremist divide within Hamas before the mods got too powerful. Now all bets are off and it looks like 2002 all over again, sans Sharon.

After all, if you're going to have a war you need an enemy.
