View Full Version : Remakes you'd actually LIKE to see

I figured that since Hollywood is hellbent on remaking every movie from the last 30 years (Superman Returns, being the latest (yes, yes, I kid..well, maybe just a little)), what remakes would you actually like to see get remade?

I would like to see a remake of Cannonball Run, but only if they can make it cheesier AND only if they can get Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, and Jackie Chan back to reprise their roles.

I would also like to see a capable remake of Logan's Run, but have it actually follow the story set in the books this time around. This I would only want to see if Bryan Singer is NOT anywhere near this project.

There you go, have at it.

"Journey to the Centre of the Earth". I know they're doing something with Brendan Fraser - apparently for IMAX - but it sounds kinda cheesy. I'd like to see a really big-budget take on it. As long as it wasn't too CGI-centric.

TV Remakes of JCE= 93 (http://imdb.com/title/tt0107279/) and 99 (http://imdb.com/title/tt0200755/) I think 99 was ok, but the original was still my favorite.

I thought I wanted to see a new Around the World in 80 Days until Jackie Chan did it. I still haven't seen it.

I agree on the Cannonball Run.

There are not a lot of old big budget films I would want redone. I like the way they used to do movies, with big sets and lots of extras. I'd be afraid of what they would do with Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, or Spartacus. However, I would maybe like to see some character driven movies redone, like the Thin Man Series, a new Road series, with actors we actually like together (ahem, unlike the stupid Chris Farley/David Spade movies), Saturday Night Fever, Robinson Crusoe... etc.

For the most part, I wouldn't really like to see any of the old flicks remade, or more sequels. I have so much more respect for the cinematography and acting of the past, that I wouldn't want to see some new actors/directors destroy a popular story.

I'd rather the theaters spend the money to restore old films, and put them in the theaters for a run, than make a sequel and destroy cinema history.

The Wizard of Oz
2001: A Space Oddysey

These two films stand alone, and don't need remakes, per se, but I would like to see them remade using the more advanced technology we have today. I wouldn't change anything else, except I would change the ending to 2001 to be more in line with Clarke's book.

Another film that I suspect Spielberg would want to remake is Jaws, due to the problems they had with the mechanical shark at the time.

I would like to see Oz made NOT as a musical, but closer to the actual story, which had some very morbid and dark moments in it, as well as enchanting and mysterious. LOTS of material to mine in all of Baum's books. (The movie Return to Oz in the 80's was on the right track, if ultimately lackluster)

There were a whole bunch of cool Oz stories. They could make those into features.

I'd like to see them make the last one or two books in the 2001 series. But since 2010 was a bomb I doubt it will ever happen. :(

Actually - those are good picks for movies. 2010 was a dud but
"2061" and "3001 The Final Odyssey" are superior works and with a good
screen treatment would make great cinema. N

I must say... I disagree with a lot of your old classic choices, particularly the maltese falcon. I love that movie an if I could do anything to change it or make it better, I wouldn't.

I'd like to see Planet of the Apes remade... but like... the original script, not that actual remake crap.

I'd also like to see Hang 'em High remade... because that movie blows... but has so much potential... seeing as it's a Clint Eastwood western.

I can't even watch those old Bogart movies anymore- the B&W is so drab and everyone delivers their lines in a monotone voice like robots... we need a remake!

Sgt. Awesome
07-04-2006, 12:40 PM
Exactly! Those drab monotone voices are part of the wonder of the film. I mean... the plot isn't THAT great.

And if they remade it... and it sucked (which is a high probability with remakes these days) there would be hell to pay.

See... modern hollywood isn't a sophisticated beast. If they remade that movie, there would need to be fight scenes, gun battles, explotions. It's a detective movie where everyone carries a piece, that's what would happen. It's FILM NOIR, noir being the french word for black. Black being one half of black and white.

TrekSucksHard
07-05-2006, 01:15 AM
Just because its a remake doesn't automatically mean it would suck. If you could imagine Chris Nolan or Quentin Tarantino remaking the Maltese Falcon or The Big Sleep that would be cool- just don't consider Michael Bay or John McTiernan and you'll be fine. http://messageboard.cinescape.com/cinescape/forums/images/icons/SmileyWink.gif

The man from UNCLE

I thought that a movie based on the sixties television show; the man from UNCLE would have been interesting. An updated story about an international spy agency dealing with terrorism and all the other crap going on today could have had potential. I’d cast George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

To bad, it looks like the usual legal difficulties have gotten in the way.

Peter Jackson's doing another remake:

Peter Jackson to remake "The Dam Busters" (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/5301998.stm)

PJ doing a WWII movie sounds interesting, especially since a lot of information regarding dam busting was classified when then original film was made. Thank God Gibson's not doing this one anymore!

Personally, I'd like to see a remake of "Arsenic and Old Lace." It's in my top 3 screwball comedies ever. For those who haven't seen it, it's about theater critic Mortimer Brewster (Cary Grant) who goes to visit his 2 elderly aunts on the day he gets married. While there, he discovers that the two lovable old ladies have been poisoning lonely elderly gentlemen who come to rent a room in the house, then burying them in the basement, seeing it as mercy killings. Also living with in the house is Mortimer's uncle who believes himself to be President Teddy Roosevelt (always blowing a bugle, charging up stairs, and believing the bodies in the basement to be yellow fever victims). On top of that, his psychotic and homicidal older brother (Boris Karloff), who has recently escaped a mental institution, arrives with his plastic surgeon (Peter Lorre) and a dead body in tow. Hilarity ensues.

After doing some thinking, I'm still not quite sure who I'd like to see in it, but I think Betty White would be great as one of the aunts. Ryan Reynolds might make a good Mortimer, Robin Williams would probably be good as Teddy, and Steve Buscemi would work in the Peter Lorre role. Not sure about the other aunt, perhaps Cloris Leachman, Judi Dench or Dianne Wiest. The Karloff role is harder to fill since in the original play and film, Karloff's character is said in the police report to resemble Karloff, so the role was made for him. You'd need someone who could carry Karloff's menace and looked quite a bit like him. Jim Carey maybe, or Paul Bettany or Crispin Glover. I think a remake could work if they kept up the pacing of the original and paid attention to detail.

But you look at all this movies right from back when he was a kid - and he's definitely perfected his run scenes. Is there any movie that you don't see him run in? Born on the 4th of July maybe?

My ultimate choice would have to be Resident Evil. If they made it almost exaclty the way the game play went... As far as story, timing, creatures... ect. ect. I think it would blow horror movies out of the water... not to mention that piece of shit movie they made off of it! Oh and a sequal popped out of it... what a crock of shit!

Someone said Predator 2, I love that idea... better directing and a faster pace of action... that movie would do well. Predator in the city, how can you fuck that up!

Dracula would be cool... Maybe Frankenstien... or The Invisible Man.
Oh! The Creature from the Black Lagoon!!!

Godzilla would be nice! None of this mommy protecting her babies bull shit!

Deep Blue Sea, lets get a better movie outta this shark escapade.

I think alot of horror movies would be fun to see remade, like Nightmare on Elm Street... with just a whole new look but same story line.

Oh! The Creature from the Black Lagoon!!!

They actually approached Peter Jackson about doing a Creature remake, but he went with his original King Kong idea. This of course was back in 96 when the studio wisely pulled the plug on that Kong idea considering the Godzilla and Mighty Joe Young remakes were both being released that year. Then, Kong would've sunk and we wouldn't have had LOTR and the recent Kong. Still, I'd actually like to see PJ (or someone equally qualified) to get around to a Creature remake, always one of my favorite Universal monsters.

I'd like to see screwball comedies make a comeback. Something like Bringing Up Baby or My Man Godfrey. No teenagers though, more mature actors and actressess to give the films some diginity. I could see something with Rachel McAdams in it.
