I really wish I didn't have to tape this lecture tonight. I'd be sitting on the couch with a bucket of popcorn. I can't wait to hear what comes out of either of their mouths.

I watched it. I must say both sides did a good job. But Biden did better. Palin seemed like she was just repeating talking points that she had been previously coached on. At least she didn't sound like the fool that she did during that Katey Curick (sp) interview.

One of my friends who loves Bush/Cheney and now adores McCain/Palin, called me to try to get me to admit that because she did well last night that she is now ready to be the president. Palin was engaging and she will win over people who don't understand the real issues because she seems more accessible than the other people on both tickets.

I think that she learned A LOT in her debate prep. I give her props for how many facts she memorized in the past few weeks. That's got to be hard. I don't think that she has really learned all of the concepts that she talked about last night.

And she and every other world leader MUST learn to pronounce the word nuclear. It's noo-klee-er. There is only a "u" in the 1st syllable. (yes, I know that the other way is listed in the dictionary as an alternate pronuciation, but only because it's become popular, not because it's the way it's really pronounced)

Listened mostly on the radio and she didn't sound too bad; then I saw her when I got home and whenever she spoke on something where she had obviously been coached and was repeating talking points, she got this moose-in-the-headlights look that didn't do anything to increase my confidence in her.

The Nukular thing only reinforces my belief that Palin is GW Bush in female form. Although I will grant, at least she comes by her "just folks" demeanor honestly, and has a good excuse for seeming relatively unknowledgable about things outside her experience. Silver-spoon Shrub, with two Ivy League degrees, has none.

Yeah, pronounced the "popular" way, one sounds like a goddamned hick.

"Hi, can I call you Joe?"

For some reason I can't get past that one.

I thought she pandered to "Joe Six-Pack" way too often last night with her obvious and practised talking points. She seemed to inject comments like "hockey mom" and "they hate America" where they made very little sense. At least to me.

Overall, she didn't do as bad as I expected, but my expections were low to begin with.

Yeah, that “Hey, can I call ya Joe?” question was such an obvious set up for her to later “Say it ain't so, Joe” line that it stood out like a sore thumb.

She did better than I had thought she would (I was really looking forward to a train wreck), but that entire “folksy” thing is starting to get old pretty quick, I hope we don’t have to endure that for 4 or 8 years.

Please pardon my ignorance on this subject, but what's the point to Diagramming people's sentences? I have never heard of that in any of the english classes I had. Perhaps I too have to be a word nerd to get it.

Listening to political talk radio on the long drive home last night, both left and right and it is just about laughable how Fox is CLINGING to the fact that she didn't fall flat on her face and calling a "victory" for Palin in the debate. The are honestly trying to sell the line that she won.

In all fairness, I call it a draw from a purely acedemic standpoint. She didn't get any real zingers in against him, nor did he. The called each other "wrong" a lot but he stuck to the polite elder statesmen tack - playing too nice and she stuck to the "folksy" crap "don'ch know"

wink wink

I love words and am a word nerd. But diagraming sentences struck me as less about language and more like...math. Keep mathematics WELL AWAY from my language arts, thank you very much.

I'm not a big fan of the current trend to dissect her words either. A lot of politicians use their origins within their speeches to represent that good-ole boy accent and lingo to the people. Bill Clinton was one utilizing his southern accent quite often in speeches on his way to the White House in 1991.

I thought Biden at least appeared to be thinking on his feet. He wasn't flawless and he did have to correct himself a couple of times but, "dog-gone it," he was able to express his thoughts coherently and I understood his points. He didn’t get the knock out but his experience showed and his knowledge and command of the issues came through. Palin, on the other hand, when she wasn't winking at me or throwing out a "you betcha" was all over the place. My God, at several points she ignored the issue altogether and went off on subjects that would better display her obvious coaching. What the hell? She spouted words that kinda formed sentences and delivered a bunch of grammatical monstrosities, and that qualifies as a draw? Not for me, I fancy my bullshit with a bit more substance.

It’s laughable to see windbags like Glen Beck and Rush ejaculate over themselves and declare Palin the winner. It’s like saying she won because she can read crib notes effectively. Her purpose at this shindig was to regurgitate rehearsed answers, practice avoidance when the questioning beckoned some reasonable thought and inject as many “rah, rah America” statements as Gwen could endure. Holy fuck, did anybody else see through the whole “we’re mavericks” routine? This business of lowering oneself to oaf-level to appear “folksy” has become frightening. No one in the elite corridors of industry or politics should be allowed to speak like that. Ever. It does more than dumb down the candidate and all those in their presence. It hides the issue and fosters inaction. Essentially, what’s been happening for the last six or seven years.

Anyway, in the end, Palin likely appealed to those who were already in her camp. I doubt she changed many minds or even forced the hand of those on the fence. Unless those on the fence already thought her candidacy was suspect. If that’s the case then their fears were likely confirmed.

Sure he did, but it usually didn't sound like he was fronting.

Well, I suck at it. If I were bad at...say...giving ladies orgasms, probably wouldn't care for that, either.

Fortunately, not my burden.

I don't know about that, K. I'll admit that I'm not nearly as well informed on the issues as what most of you lot are, but I found Palin got better as the night went on. Even so, she was so thoroughly schooled by Biden on economic issues that I've got to give the round to him by a 10-9 score. I've also got to say I loved his "Bridge to nowhere" reference and actually had an "oh snap!" sort of reaction.

It's a real shame the Primary was over by the time it got to Pa. Based on what I heard in this debate I'm thinking I might have been convinced to vote for Biden had the chance presented itself. Sadly by the time the candidates reached my states there were only two left riding the Donkey, and the Elephant never bothered to show up since it's rider already had it wrapped up. That's why I get so pissed off when I think about Florida and Michigan being sanctioned for holding their elections early. Maybe they didn't want to have to pick from what was leftover when the candidates finally graced their states.
