That is beyond cool. Alas, I don't expect to see it until I am an old man. I have a feeling we'll be stuck with rockets for decades to come...

Stillm it's good to see the Japanese and the Europeans taking the lead on this, perhaps they can succeed where others have failed.

Maybe I shouldn't be so pessimistic.

There are some interesting implications for space commerce and space exploration. A space elevator, or tethers, could be used to propel payloads and crewed vehicles (http://www.tethers.com/)throughout the solar system and beyond, apparently. Just like throwing a stone by twirling a slingshot fast enough.

If you want to get bogged down in mathematics, here's a pdf of a proposal (http://www.star-tech-inc.com/papers/asteroids/asteroids.pdf)to use tethers/elevators to either transfer material from swiftly-rotating asteroids to Earth orbit, or to use transfer of momentum to bring the asteroids themselves to near-Earth space.

As we go into space, I say that we maximize the energy that has been given to us freely. Gravitational energy, solar wind, planetary electromagnetic fields... seems like we have everything we need, waiting for us.
