View Full Version : Batman sequel theme

As Batman Begins dealt with fear and conquering it (using the fear gas a la Scarecrow), what will the sequel(s) deal with?

Duality seems to be a popular choice among message boards. Seeing Bruce Wayne handle both his Playboy persona and the role of Batman in only a short amount of time, how will it affect him later on, like in a year or so after donning the suit? This could fit really well if Harvey Dent is a central character in the upcoming sequels.

Insanity could work also, with the Joker making his mark on the newly revived franchise.

Personally, I would almost like to see a theme of consequence of actions, or "escalation", going on, using the events of the first movie. What will happen to the underground world of organized crime with Falcone now out of power? Will some of the inmates of Arkham be captured or will they still continue to enjoy their newfound freedom? Such questions should be addressed along with more consequences to Batman's actions as the movies continue along.

Just some food for thought

I agree with you NG, you make a lot of good points.

In any case the re-birth of this franchise as a possible string of motion pictures needs to take a nod from the Spiderman films and handle the character development very carefully.

Bruce needs to go through some very specific points of growth as a character and the audience needs to feel it. Sell the Batman with the effects and the even work the villiain (whomever it is) into Bruce's life, but bring the character development to the forefront.

In short, avoid every mistake the original Batman films made and they'l do fine.

I would love to see the next film deal with duality and it's drain on Bruce Wayne/Batman.

I think it's important that Batman and Bruce Wayne lead very different lives, with little to no intersection. And please, for the love of God, no one else learns his damn identity. Every single friggin' Bat-film has someone learning who he is.

Sorry, I'm a little touchy on the comic-film cliche`s.

Yes, I think duality and escalation should be the themes of the next film.

I think if they go with the duality theme, they'll have to give Bruce Wayne a lot more to do. By the time of his return to Gotham in the first film, Bruce Wayne was kind of an afterthought, a nonentity designed only to give cover for Batman.

What I'd like to see in the second film is that Bruce, now that he has regained control of Wayne Enterprises, has more reason to develop this side of his character. As a millionaire businessman, presumably he can do a lot of good, just as his father had done. Put that in jeopardy because of his role as Batman, and you've got a great character conflict set up: how can he do the most good--as Bruce Wayne or Batman? Can he keep them in balance and still help people? That would place a great psychological, individual conflict at the core of a superhero story.
