Ok, in honor of the 4th, how about trying to name the Great American Movie? People always talk about the Great American Novel, how about a film counterpart? A movie that shows the American spirit, and the ups and downs of coming to and living in this country.

Here's a few I thought of:

Citizen Kane
Gone With the Wind
Forrest Gump
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
West Side Story

Hey, maybe even just a movie that makes you feel all Americanny, like The Music Man or hell, even Independence Day (I know it's all about alien invasion, but anytime to see our boys kicking ass on a grand scale is cool, especially with that great score behind them!). Maybe even Superman, he is all about truth, justice and the American way! :D

Kelly's Heroes
Conspiracy Theory
Wag the Dog
Canadian Bacon
Enemy of the State

no, seriously..

Roots
Little Big Man
Captains and the Kings
Grapes of Wrath

I like my miniseries. 2 Hours is just not enough for me. Of course, sometimes it's way too much, like when I was labotomized during the viewing of Dude, Where's My Car?

Independence Day and Team America. Because basically, America is about blowing the shit out of stuff and asking questions later.

My favourite America-themed movies usually involve inspired people designing, building, and otherwise doing things no-one else has done before.

In no particular order:

The Right Stuff-- American ingenuity, bravery, and righteousness in the service of a noble cause.

Tucker-- American ingenuity betrayed by collusion of elite interests.

Apollo 13-- American ingenuity vindicated by out-of-the-box engineering and determination.
