I am sure that everyone will be overjoyed, as I am, to see that an MBE ("Member of the Order of the British Empire") has been awarded by the Queen today to Mr Michael Young for his services to bee-keeping. It is delightful to realise that the Queen is in touch with some of the most important issues of today. Nothing is as important as the preservation of the global bee community.
Maybe the Swedish Nobel Academy will award a special prize next year for any scientist who can find a solution to the dreadful problem of disappearing bees...
What if we made 2010 the Year of the Bee?

Not to belittle The Beekeepers, but I'm absolutely delighted that Terry Pratchett has been awarded a Knighthood!:-

Do you know if Terry Pratchett has written any books about bees?:headscratch:
I always wanted to keep bees. Big fat bumble bees.

Hi Skiv,
That's terrific news! Please follow your heart. The more bees in the world, the better for everybody!
Best wishes

Hiya Rosen! *waves*
And I shall. If I ever settle down somewhere without a roommate with large dogs that are prone to knocking over things such as beehives, I'll be repopulating the WORLD.
Or, at leas the tricounty area!

I was intrigued to read this morning that not all the bees in the world are disappearing. This article discusses how in Japan, the indigenous bee is not under threat. It would be that Lady Kannon is providing for the bees or simply that small is beautiful again (pace Schumacher). Either way, it looks as though the world may not end in 2012! Phew!

I was very moved by the following poem, written by the English street-artist, Banksy:
The Bear and the Bee, Notting Hill
Once upon a time there was a bear and a bee
who lived in a wood and were the best of friends.
All summer long the bee collected nectar from morning to night
while the bear lay on his back basking in the long grass.
When winter came the bear realised he had nothing to eat
and thought to himself
'I hope that busy little bee will share some of his honey with me'.
But the bee was nowhere to be found -
He had died of a stress-induced coronary disease
