Hey folks, a couple of things have been happening on the Mania front for quite a while that can be said and there are some things on the horizon where we can all be more involved.

First, if you have been keeping an eye on the main site for the past year, you will have noticed new ppl coming on board. Chip(the man behind the curtain and holding the wallet) has been getting out there and hiring new additions to the Mania team. If you're into comics, you will have definitely met the new Comicscape writer fo Mania, Kurt A. He's been doing his weekly articles for the last year or so and he loves fan feedback. Just mosey on over there and give him a shoutout.

You will have also noticed that recently, Chip has us a new full time News Editor. He's already signed up for the boards and that would be Karl Schneider. Karl is no rookie to the ways of messageboards and online news. He used to run a thriving community much like Cinescape was in older years back before UBB killed our registrations and news dried up between News Editors. Karl is just like Kurt A. He's a hands on guy and he's always looking for some credible feedback from all of us as well as keeping his ears to the ground for news crossing into the entertainment industry. If you hit our Forum Leaders link, you will see he is also our newest admin to our mb community but as you know, his focus is news news news just like any news editor's agenda would be. If you have contacts or come across something interesting, give him a shout out as well. That means only interesting tidbits, Jakester. You hear me? There will be no unauthorized humping of Karls leg by the likes of you, Jakey until we know Karl has gotten the cooties shot, new Editor or not. Once he gets the cooties shot, then you may hump his leg, okay?

Everyone be sure to welcome Karl, our newly fresh News Guru. In time, we can spoil the freshness I'm sure. :)

Which brings us to our next item...

Karl and I as well as others are always looking to improve the experience for new users as well as loyal users in coming here. To make it more fun for everyone. He's been on the ball already in most aspects as soon as he took over as our newly named News Guru for the site and one big thing that I'm sure alot of people have already missed have been contests on the main site. He's also brought 2 or 3 breaking exclusives since taking over the gig before any other site online ran across them. Of course, he's always looking for more since that's the name of game when it comes to news but we're brainstorming ways of making this site more customer friendly and getting the traffic back to where it once was. We had major hic-ups last year with the older UBB thread messageboard software that didn't help but with the much thanks to Chip, that issue is no more. The past is the past and now's the time of the future as they say. In the process of these news exclusives and new contests from the minds of Karl and the Cinescape staff, we will be doing new things with our users here and our users on the main site. One such order of business is getting mail lists together. If you missed out on the past few contests at Cinescape.com main and the past few exclusives that the site had before any other site had it.....and wouldn't like to miss out on the next, we will be getting a list of email contacts together shortly. If you don't care about contests or breaking news and come here for only the fun, that's cool too. I'm just stating the facts here, you Maniacs. :D

Anyway, we will be working on that shortly. Just letting all of you cool cats know about it.

Lastly, we are always looking to improve things around the house, so to speak. If you have any ideas which are worthy in your mind to improve the Maniac experience, don't hesitate to give us a word...or two....or three....(but not four, damn it! We have ppl to do and places to see!)

That is all for now, you loyal minions of this cozy land.

Weird, just a few minutes ago I was reading the main site and thinking how much improved it seems to have become recently. Keep up the good work guys!

lol Is that supposed to mean something, you Hoser. Trailer park, what?

You want Karl and the Cine team to install a Trailer Park at main or are you talking to Senior King Voyeur above?

Shall I break out the "Make sense and not be Vague" stick and beat you with it? Better yet, we can get our community perv to come in here and beat you with said stick. He would enjoy it at least.

Okay, I realize that in your old age you tend to forget things that have been mentioned from time to time.

By Trailer Park, I meant that (as a suggestion) there should be a place on the main site that has links to movie trailers for up and coming movies. Kind of like a one stop media center for all things movie related.

No, our forum's Url will be changing Monday or Tuesday though.

DarkJedi
10-27-2006, 04:28 PM
Well, right now our forum's url is.... htt.. messageboard.cinescape.com/

On Monday or Tuesday, the forums url will be moved over to Mania's url...probably htt..mania.com/forums or messageboard.mania.com/...

This is no merger, though..It's all been Mania's since the late nineties. They're just shelving their Cinescape brand name for the foreseeable future.

KingVoyeur

No you wont...You'll just have to check your email and have someone give you the new direct link to the boards....You never know...THIS current link may still work by just redirecting you to the new link.

What in the holy hells is a 'bang' on the new board?

Cuz there's nothing there splaining it.

you know what I'm sayin?

DarkJedi
10-30-2006, 01:14 AM
Yo, nice retro speak.

Think of a bang as a signal of drawing attention to a particular article or voting on it with your approval. If you make a comment(positive or negative alike) on a particular item, bang it and it will draw the attention of everyone viewing the site. It's a kind of "flag system" where the users get to bang the crap out of any good articles/videos/blogs in a group effort if it's worth reading more then any other articles for whatever particular reason.

Booyah.

We can't call ourselves Cinners anymore?
Now we're just a bunch O' maniacs?

Well that's just plain insane in the membrane. :jump2: :headscratch:

Might as well update this thread in the official capacity...

Mania Update

Crossing into what I originally posted about Chip bringing in some new people over the last year or two as well as paying for an update on our messageboard software, the people of Mania have also performed a major overhaul of the official brand and namesake of Chip's baby from the 90s. It's always been Cinescape by Mania but for now and the foreseeable future, the Cinescape brand itself is being shelved with Mania coming to the lead in brandname. The Mania team's new site has officially launched today, October 31st 2006, which features a more interactive media feel to the main site.

Upon the top of that screen you will see the following link options:

-News (http://www.mania.com/C-63/)

-Movies (http://www.mania.com/C-43/)

-TV (http://www.mania.com/C-67/)

-DVD (http://www.mania.com/C-91/)

-Comics (http://www.mania.com/C-12/)

-Games (http://www.mania.com/C-25/)

-Books (http://www.mania.com/C-1/)

-Toys (http://www.mania.com/C-81/)

-Music (http://www.mania.com/C-55/)

These are accesses to many of Mania's new and older columnists that have come aboard...Quite a few have been providing reviews and news for these sections for a few months now and some are relatively fresh so welcome them aboard when you get a chance. Karl Schneider and the many columnists of Mania's sections look forward to hearing from you all..

Below the individual official media sections, you will see the banner and below that, you will see where the new interactive additions come into play, titled "Maniac Stuff"

These new features are solely for the users here and there to play with as a way of releasing their particular messages, building a community of users in a more interactive file sharing manner then before..

There are 8 tabs for Maniac Stuff.

New Interactive Features: Maniac Stuff

-Blogs (http://www.mania.com/blogs.php)

If you have Xanga, Myspace, or....Blogs :) , you are quite familiar with this feature. It gives you a chance to catalog your thoughts in a manner similiar to posting on messageboards.

-Fiction (http://www.mania.com/fiction.php)

If you have a love for writing entertainment scripts, fan fiction stories, fiction stories, poetry, etc...This will be the feature for you to share it to a much larger medium of people.

-Videos (http://www.mania.com/videos.php)

This tab is for uploading your favorite entertaining videos for everyone to see. From favorite YouTube comedic clips to favorite movie trailers, the choice is in your hands. Please refrain from copyrighted materials or offensive material.

-Cheats (http://www.mania.com/cheats.php)

Another tab of sharing your knowledge, this time in the manner of video games. If you know any great cheats or hidden eggs on a particular game or console, here's your chance to share it with your fellow Maniacs.

-Images (http://www.mania.com/images.php)

Much like the Video sharing option, this is for great Image files on your computer or around the web that you feel like sharing. Just upload whatever gif, jpg, etc you have in mind and it will be there for all to look upon..Same message of warning applies as to video. No copyright or offensive material.

-Reviews (http://www.mania.com/reviews.php)

This is a new function which corresponds with the official media sections of the new site. Under the official sections at the top....News, Movies, TV, DVD, Comics, Games, Books, Toys, Music.....If you click on a certain review by one of the many columnists, you will have two options. One is to make a regular comment for the article/reviewer in question and the other option is to make your own review of the movie, dvd, game, comic or show in question. By clicking on the review link at the bottom of the article in question, you will have a couple of options to make your review look more presentable. First is to give your review a title, a grade level(A+,A-,B+, etc), a sub-summary and then you can upload a picture which corresponds with the review(of the main star, the cast, a clip, etc). Type in your review and send. By clicking on the "Reviews" tab, you will see a compilation of all the Maniac's reviews in the database.

-Development Hell (http://www.mania.com/C-107/)

Much like our older site, this is an archived system where the user may find a list of movies or games being developed in Hollywood/Gaming Industry. Each movie or game listing has the articles corresponding with their subjects in terms of news dating back to whatever years the production began.

-Forums (http://messageboard.cinescape.com/cinescape/forums/)

Link to our crazy Maniacs here.

So, the new site is launched now officially and a big congrats goes to Chip and his Mania team members who have been getting this ready for quite a long time...with alot of hardwork, time & effort from the web designers. Go maniac style, have fun and enjoy yourselves.

So....I think I'm done with the main page as it looks now. Between the seizure inducing ads, the haphazard placement of articles, and the general suckiness of the page layout, I'm done with the Mania main page.

Maybe if some of the shit gets reined in the future, I'll go back and take a look at it. As it stands now, I need to go take some aspirin after looking at that page.

Well if Cinescape is done with, than so am I. I enjoyed the updates on the various media but now I can't even find updates to anything. DaForce is right, the main page is seizure inducing and there's too much busy work going on for anyone to really navigate.

I guess the awful web developers of this site have never taken any formal web design classes, let alone classes in Human-Computer Interaction. What a shame, Cinescape ruled.

I'd just be happy if the first forum section were labeled "The Maniacs' Central Nerve."

Unless you're suggesting there's only one maniac here. Then "Maniac's" would be correct.

I'm not sure about the blinding whiteness you're talking about. That was with the older outdated site.

Update

Just letting everyone know that the new site isn't finished by any means. Chip wrote a blog today that he will be listening to everyone's ideas on how to make it better and improve some quirks about it.

Chip's Blog (http://www.mania.com/chip/blog/33.html)

So far, if I'm reading the complaints correctly, the navigation seems to be the key complaint. Most people prefer the box of "Today's news" somewhere on the main page instead of just clicking on the News section, Games section, Dvd section etc..

Just letting you know that Chip is reading the good & bad reviews of the site's look and he does care, people. It's his baby and he will continually improve on it with what everyone comes to agree to want out of it.

Please be patient with the Mania team here. It's alot of money, time, resources putting together a final proven product and since our market today is as it is, there really is no final product..the market is always changing.

Okay, then. But I still wonder ... who is "THE maniac"? Is he/she hidden in a room somewhere, cackling as he/she devises new links and features for the website?

And what happens if we get on THE maniac's central nerve? Is it his/her last nerve? Are we in danger if we don't behave?

If there are spankings to be distributed, do I still get to administer them?:ohwell:

Mania Update

Development Hell is now in your capable hands.

Letting everyone know of a new feature that is now possible for all users in the Mania system, especially knowing how much information there is out there over upcoming comic adaptation movies that can be possibly missed.

You go to our Development Hell Section (http://www.mania.com/C-107/) and look through upcoming movies that you're interested in and keep tabs on. Click on the development hell article and read through what is listed. If you know of articles from news sites online(superherohype, joblo, mania, chud, hollywood reporter, variety, etc) that relate to the subject of the Dev Hell piece and is part of the hollywood production process of that film getting made for the big screen....You, the user, can now upload the updates to that article. A casting announcement, a stall in film-making, a press release from a Comic Con, etc....Just click on the "Add update" link at the bottom of the Development Hell article and you will get transported to a submit process screen. Provide the link of the previous article(with site name), the title of the update(Iron Man update, Spiderman update, Halo update), and the text of the update. Have fun and don't hesitate to add your own updates if it's not already listed on that dev hell piece.

Mania Update

The man paying the bills is always listening. In answer to some complaints, there have been a few things changed around on the new site. One, we would like to encourage everyone to create Reviews towards genre tv, movies, games, books making more presentable and in the "Spotlight". As such, the designers have done away with our "Fiction" section on the mania.com page and put in it's stead, a newly featured "Reviews" section.

They've also created a new function for our comment people in which editing is now thankfully possible.

Our residential CSS queen, Monic has been kind enough to get rid of the small font issue riddling our text boxes and our post templates. Three hoorays for Monic for being there for me(us) in a time of need as she always is.

Following up on the Development Hell new feature, now it's time to spotlight "Reviews".

Maniac Reviews

If you would like to put up a review for a genre movie, novel, game, tv series, etc...Here's what you do. Let's say you would like to review the upcoming Final Fantasy game released recently...Go to mania.com, click on our Games section and near the top right of the screen(right underneath our green Mania links), you will see three white links labeled: Book Archives: Features link, News link, Reviews link

Click on the Reviews link. Look for a game review which matches up with the game(iin this case Final fantasy) review you're creating. Click on that mania review and pan down to the bottom and click on "Add Review"(near the bottom right of the article).

The "Add Review" submission process page will pop up on you. First, write out the details of the review. Your review title, your review summary, your review grade(Product review A+, A-, A, B+, B- etc etc)...Most importantly, I advise you to upload a Picture which corresponds with your review. Any picture relating to the subject matter will do. A clip of the product, the game's cover, anything you can find which matches up with the product you're reviewing.. In this case, a Final Fantasy picture of some kind. Once that's done, you're ready to either write out your review or copy/paste it*if you've already written it out elsewhere*.

Click on the submit process and it will go into the moderation que with a "Awaiting Mania moderation" icon next to your article. Once I log in, I'll read it to make sure it's appropriate(you know, not just a bunch of obscene trollish crap from a troll with a vendetta) and then upload it to the main site.

The review will then be ready to go on the main site, both on the main page and in the "Reviews" tab under Maniac Stuff. We already have two users from our forums who have graced the Review new feature in the manner of Slamshut and King Voyeur so go check it out when you get a chance. What can I say, their reviews were good and humorous(we all know if Slam's involved).

This method of uploading Reviews is the same style as uploading Development Hell updates of your very own in basics. Except with Development Hell updates, please provide the correct source link in the submission process.

Talk to you folks later.

Hey, I know you guys are trying to raise money and shit, but can we cool it with the expanding ads that are bleeding down into the forum?

I'm starting to get to the point where I'm ready to boycott Circuit City, Toshiba, and that crappy 'Fright Fest' film thing just due to the ads interfering here. So if your intention is to get me to not shop at the stores in your banners, well...as G.W. once said..'Mission accomplished!'

Daforce, all sites have the same advertisements...so saying the fault lines with this one for that crappy ad is not really useful.

That annoying piece of crap Circuit City advertisement is plaguing me at many movie news sites, this one included. It freezes the links as well.

Not sure how much can be done about it since all the sites have the same advertisers though...but Argh, that circuit city one gets on my nerves.

Someone should write Gorilla advertising with a "Circuit City knows how to piss off people" comment or two.

It just seems odd to me that you can't really find out anything about him now.
I mean, there's a Wikepedia entry on Harry Knowles...
And I'd say Patrick was just as important to the growth of sites like this as anyone.

Coming Attractions was one of the first sites of its kind. And to a dork like me it provided hours of distraction and boatloads of useless knowledge.

So cheers Patrick , wherever you are I hope you're well and happy.

I'm curious about the closing of the two sister boards. Any info on that?

DarkJedi
11-21-2006, 03:25 AM
Sure, I'll answer both. LOL

Sasquatch, I think Patrick is lying low(relatively speaking) for reasons that having such an effect caused...He dedicated years of his life to his baby and he still owns it, he's just pursuing other things. Like spending time with his family and other interests that he's always wanted to get involved with. He's been working his way into the storyboarding and writing of comics for years now, trying to get his way in(as if he isn't respectable enough in alll our eyes). He's also always had an eye for script writing and storyboarding on genre entertainment. Like in the last month or so, he created a hub for BSG material online for a "well known" site...It is odd that he doesn't have a wiki page. I submit that everyone around here could easily fix that solution and start working on a wiki entry together because of all Sauriol did for us througout the years. Seems like a pretty cool community project.

Sgt, in answer to your question, we were just as surprised that the server was shut off. We left up the old cinescape.messageboard.com ftps and urls on that old dedicated server for everyone to be able to save their favorite threads, posts, pms in the past year. We we had little to no notice that the web host server it was on was being shut down so we were just as surprised on it. Our other admin, Will was scrambling this weekend in notifying the admin of the Harry Potter community of it's impending shutdown so chaotic is a word to describe that situation. Luckily the phenom crew had some time to come aboard over here(albiet for different reasons). The harry potter side were still working out the details(with a whole 12 hours of notice) and believe me when I say, we care about them. Chip cares about all his maniacs, hence he's been whipping techies into shape recentlly listening to all complaints on that new launch and continually changing things around. If he didn't care, he wouldn't have kept the old host server opened at all or paid for it this past year. It's unfortunate that we had little time to get the Potter community situated in the chaos of the last days but as I say, we're still working with it and I will be happy to make any move here more accessible for them, creating subforums for our Harry Potter board to give them room to breathe again. They have run other sites before even being merged here and Scotty knows alot on the subject so I bet they already have a site going. It's a work in progress right now but everything will be worked out.

I'd ask if you think the "gore" factor will take off some of our box office predictions but I should ask that question attached to your latest review, in my box office report or here in the forums at our 300 discussion. Or all 3...make you answer it 3 times. Heh.

The 'gore' was pretty cartoonish actually. I honestly think that that won't hurt the total take on this movie.

Hey, my Spidey 3 review is in the queue since Sat.

I'm just going to start a thread that's all about me and my reviews.

Okay. I'll upload it right now.

Though, if you throw in more jabs towards LOTR and Star Wars for the 1000th time like your Spider-Man 3 review here at the forums, I may just scream to bloody heaven while approving your review to upload it to the site. Heh.

Uploading it now, Daforce.

I've submitted its approval but since submissions appear on the front page from latest submissions date and time, in order for your review to appear on our front page...

Resubmit it again. Right now, it's 4th or 5th down due to chronological order of submission.

Resubmit it again today or tomorrow and I'll make sure it appears on the front page of the website.

Nah, that's cool.

It doesn't have to be at the top of the page for me.

I'm not that much of a primadona.

Oh, and I heard your screams from here.

Just giving you a heads up, DJ. Posted my spoiler-free review of 28 Weeks Later on the main site.

I don't see it in the Review Que right now..Perhaps it takes an hour or two to get in the Que for me to submit it. Still, I would check your profile and click on the Reviews tab inside your profile. Does it say "Waiting for Moderation"?

Okay, I just added it again (it seems like it didn't go through the first time), and this time it's in my review tab.

Sweet.

I just saw it and uploaded it. Thanks for the headsup too. If I see it in time, I can put it up on the main site's front page.

DJ, is there a way to link my review to the site's review without having to cut and paste into a new review?

Sometimes I get to the movie before you guys do, and I'd like to link them up.

Oh yeah, so that means that my review is all queued up again and awaiting your approval.

Thanks.

I've always found that annoying too.

I can check for you on it. There may not be a programming code for it since you're putting up a review which has yet to be in our official html code system for the main site side..

But I will pass this note to our programmer and put it next on the agenda to look into.

I'm thinking in my backend, I can place your review attached to the official review on my site WITHOUT you having to resend it..Let me check now.

Isn't that where some people tell you to put your reviews?

Sorry, couldn't help myself.
