A new series is in the works about Earth colonies on Mars, the Moon, and the moons around Jupiter and Saturn, etc. The earth gets destroyed and the colonies are left to fend for themselves. It's sketchy so far, but it sounds cool to me.

Not to pull away from your original post Kirk - that show does sound pretty cool. Sci Fi Channel flat out SUCKED 10 years ago when I first got cable. They've come a long way with the program development.
Anyway, you peaked my interest here becuase it made me thing - Has Ben Bova's work ever been translated on screen? I've read most of the books he's written that cover most of our solar system and it is a facinating series of works. Mars and Return to Mars being the best.
Know of any series or screen adaptations ever done?:dunno:

Ben Bova isn't presently involved with this. But there will undoubtedly be many writers involved with scripts, and he might be interested in contributing in that fashion.

That series does sound interesting. I don't know about any Bova adaptations, but I did see something a couple years ago about SFC optioning Kim Stanley Robinson's "Red Mars." I also saw it mentioned in one of their promos where they briefly show upcoming projects, but I don't know if it's actually filming now or is still in development hell. There's nothing recent on the SFC website. Too bad; Robinson's Red/Green/Blue Mars trilogy is one of the best colonization scenarios I've red.

That's a pun vice a misspelling, right?

Apparently the story for the pilot/1st episode of The Home Worlds has been written. The wheels are turning so we'll see what happens.

It just makes me wonder what is going on in the programming dept of Skiffy. One the one hand, adventurous, promising stuff like this seemingly living up to the premise. On the other...wrestling...Law N' Order, shitty movies...
Just who the hell is really in charge over there?

Just remember, if there wasn't an audience for something, it wouldn't be on the air. As sad as it seems, there really are people who like things I consider beyond pointless, all the way to "why does something like this even exist?" There is no accounting for tastes, so be glad it seems there is something for everyone out there.

Yes, AK, I understand supply and demand. But there's your advertised mission statement and branding. You are the SCI FI CHANNEL. Shitty B movies, ok. But wrestling? Law and Order? WTF?
Might as well have the all day auction on MTV. Whatever gets an audience isn't good enough. Get the audience YOU ARE TARGETING.
There is no magic piece of programming that will get everyone. But if you decide on a specific demographic and serve them well, you will get a steady audience.
I mean, the science fiction fan market is a set demographic. Serve them, or don't. But stop insulting all audiences by trying to straddle the line.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I imagine, although I don't know this, the Sci-Fi channel has some financial reason for running programming that is not science fiction. Lack of material? Sponsorship? Whatever the reason, I suspect they don't have any other choice at the moment. What will make things change, is the will of the public.

How about not trusting the product enough to bring them the highly unrealistic results their higher ups want? Not contributing "enough" to the quarterly percentage increases that Wall Street is so hung up on nowadays?
Any of that would fit into the bs behavior of the suits nowadays.
