Have any of you looked at or post on the "The World of Harry Potter"?
I was looking at it today and I was scared.
Why?
There are people on their giving out their measurements, age, where they live, what school they go to. There is a girl on there that is 13 years old giving out all of this information. I am just concerned that they give out too much information to someone who lives close to them. :(
What do you think about children / pre-teens giving out information on message boards?

No one of any age should give out personal information on message boards. If you want someone on a board to have your address or whatever, then you either PM them, or exchange e-mail addresses and communicate off-line.
13 year old people tend to be inexperienced, and don't realize there really are bad people out there, so tend to be more trusting than older people. A Harry Potter board here is probably pretty safe, but I still wouldn't give out any personal data. Measurements? That isn't a problem, since giving out that data isn't going to do any damage. Besides, they're probably lying about them anyway!

Ya......I agree with Kirk. Its kinda dangerous just cuz anybody can come in here and read. Plus.....thats why we use USERNAMES. Its important to be somewhat anonomous until some kind of trust is built up. Maybe that person is really a "cop" or who ever those folks are that troll for internet pervs (Jake excluded) to set up a sting operation. I think a mod should go in there and edit and or talk to that person about the situation.

This is why kids should not have internet-accessible computers in their rooms.
The family computer should be somewhere where the kids can be easily overseen, and parental controls should be placed on it as well as limiting internet access times via the hardware firewall (ie -- the router to which your broadband modem is connected). Oh, and make sure you change all of the default passwords. Kids are smart. And if you've got your own PC, keep it password protected and locked when you're away from it.

The 13 year old girl does have a user name. But, gave out her real name on the thread. Everyone was giving out their real names. The "mod" was one of the ones having a discussion with her in the thread. She was talking about her grandprarents, her sister having twins, how sick she had been with ear infections and a sore thorat. Bizarre stuff. I was just concerned about another poster that was 19 and lived within driving distance of her.
I agree with Jake. . .we have our computer out in the living room and have it set up where everyone has a different log on. The kid has access to Noggin, Nick jr. and Disney. But, that is it.

I have a 14 year old who has a computer in her room. She probably could look at some crazy stuff, but I am fairly sure she isn't since she calls me in all the time to show me something or other. She has no interest in chatting or IM... yet. But high school starts in less than 2 weeks. All this could change.

I wonder what she thinks when she reads your "dinner and bondage? works for me" line?

Probably, "Oh God. Mom's at it again. Gross!"
Trix, yeah...that sort of falls under the "know your kid" thing, and knowing (and trusting in) the type of relationship you two have.

I used to post on said board... before I came here. That's actually how I found this place.
My cool points totally just went down, I know, I felt it.
A bunch of members there met up in Boston for the book release. I hang out with member "Taotu" in the crazy thing we call IRL, she went. Hopes to go to the next one in England.
It's all about the community. The forums there actually have lists of regulars that you can be voted onto.
