View Full Version : TV on DVD

There's been a sharp rise in sales of DVD box sets of TV shows over the last year or so, so I'm wondering - what sets have people here bought, and are these just shows that you're fans of, or are you taking chances on shows you haven't seen?

For my part, having to wait for shows to cross the pond, there have been a number of shows I've seen for the first time on DVD - 'Lost' (great set), 'Sportsnight' (not so great - but the show more than made up for it), 'Six Feet Under', 'Chappelle's Show', to name a few.

I just wish HBO would reduce the price of their sets. $100 is pretty damn ridiculous.

I'm not going to spend that much money on a show I haven't seen, even if I hear that it's great. The only two shows I have on DVD right now are 24 (seasons 1 & 4) and Danger Mouse (seasons 1-4).

I've got Sportsnight also. I've also got all the Simpsons and Family Guy. Both are great, with lots of commentary.

I've got the first 2 seasons of Scrubs. Real good, with commentary on several episodes, making of, bloopers, etc.

I've got the first 2 season of Miami Vice. Great show, but the extras SUCK! First season had a couple of little documentaries about Miami and the fashion. 2nd season has NO extras. Plus they are doublesided discs, so you have to get up and flip the discs to watch more.

I've got season 1 of Night Court and Barney Miller. Both are pretty basic.

I've got the first 6 seasons of Red Dwarf. I've got a couple of episodes of Mystery Theater 3000. And Dilbert. Oh, and I have the Muppets on VHS :)

I've thought about getting Lost, Rescue Me and the 4400 on DVD, but I just haven't gotten around to it.

I've got...wow...probably more TV-DVDs than regular ones.

All Seven Simpsons Sets
All Five Sopranos Sets
Sports Night
Lost
Four Seasons of Gilmore Girls
Complete Series of "The Critic"
Season Two of Nip/Tuck
Complete Series of Wonderfalls
so many more I can't even think of...

I'm just waiting for the studios to get all the big season sets out of the way so that they can focus in on the obscure ones like my beloved Andy Richter Controls The Universe....*sigh*

And I've gotten a lot more sets through Netflix that I don't actually own yet.
The Shield
The Job (starting tomorrow)
Nip/Tuck S1
Once and Again
just to name a few.

I've bought a couple...

Band of Brothers
Six Feet Under
Chappelle's Show 1 & 2
South Park (first five seasons)
Simpsons (season one)
The Office (the original Brit series)
Arrested Development (2 seasons)
Red Skeleton
Sopranos
Homicide Life on the Street 1 & 2
Spongebob Square Pants (1, 2, 3)
V (complete series)

I plan to pick up Nip/Tuck very soon. I'm just getting into the show and I am very impressed. Much better than I anticipated. And yeah, Deacon's right about HBO pricing. I'd have several more titles if they were more reasonable.

That's all I own as far as tv series go.

I may pick up Firefly in the future, and Space: Above and Beyond.

Okay, let's see if I can remember them all:

24: all 4 seasons
Angel: all 5 seasons
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: all 7 seasons
Babylon 5: all 5 seasons
Farscape: all 4 seasons and the miniseries
Firefly
Scrubs season 1
House, MD
Lost
Space: Above and Beyond
The Pretender: all 2 seasons released thus far
Alias: first season
Gilmore Girls: seasons 1-4
Battlestar Galactica: season 1 of the new series

I think that's about it...

I'm mostly a feature film kind of fan, but I do have:

Monty Python's Flying Circus: all of Seasons 1-3, first half of Season 4 (sans John Cleese), because I am a Python fanatic
Firefly: they didn't show all the episodes on the Sci Fi Channel reruns, plus it's so damn good I'll watch it over and over and over
Arrested Development, Seasons 1 & 2: again, so damn good, and most likely won't be syndicated because it will be cancelled before they have enough episodes
miniseries: "The 10th Kingdom" (funny fantasy) and BBC's "Pride and Prejudice" (duh!)
several good nonfiction series for the family: "The Planets," "Walking with Dinosaurs," "The Future Is Wild."

I usually just stick with comedy, cause I feel like if I buy a drama with continuing stories across episodes, I'd feel committed to watching all of them, and I just don't have that much time!

So far, I've got:

Simpsons 1-6
Family Guy Vol. 1-3 and the movie
South Park 1-4 (I know, I'm behind)
Invader Zim Vol. 1-2
Aqua Teen Hunger Force Vol. 1-2, 4
Sealab 2021 Vol. 1
Space Ghost C2C Vol. 1
Absolutely Fabulous Series 1-5 and Specials
French and Saunders (all)
Cowboy Bebop Perfect Collection

I plan on getting the Batman animated series box sets, Grey's Anatomy, I'm seriously considering SG1 and BSG, and Strangers With Candy (if you haven't seen this run to your video store now. I said RUN!)

In the message boards under a TV on DVD article on the Cinescape homepage, I remember someone looking for the series Timeslip. Just in case they read this, that series just hit DVD. Thought I'd mention it.

Since no one responded to my independent thread, I was wondering if anyone knew about the thinpaks? I have wanted to buy the X-Files sets for a couple years now, but I couldn't justify paying 100-150 dollars a season. The thinpaks are going for 35. Can anyone tell me anything about them? Is it the same material, just different packaging? I can't find anything that explains the difference.

Same episodic content, obviously, but without the bonus disc of features. Hopefully an acceptable loss for $100 less.

And because somebody mentioned it previously....HBO has added pamphlets to the newly lower priced Sopranos box sets that mention season two of Carnivale is to be released at some point this year.

Whether or not that holds up remains to be seen, but it seems they are planning it.

Something to consider regarding TV shows to DVD.

Kinda sad really. At least for one of the shows listed. :(

From IMDB.com-

Cost of Music Bars Classic TV Shows From Coming to DVD

Several hit TV series of the past, including WKRP in Cincinnati, The Wonder Years and Beverly Hills, 90210, have not been released on DVD because they contain popular music on their soundtracks and the producers did not purchase rights to use the songs for home-video, the Wall Street Journal reported today (Friday). Owners of the shows have since learned that relicensing the rights now is either too expensive or too difficult to negotiate. Sony has produced DVD versions of four seasons of Married ... With Children, but without the theme, Frank Sinatra's "Love and Marriage," because it was unable to reach a licensing deal for it, the newspaper said.

omicron
05-08-2006, 08:10 AM
yeah, that's definitely a problem with older tv shows.

That's why newer shows(like Scrubs) pre-arrange the rights. Also, in regards to this issue, I am quite surprised they were able to release the first 2 seasons of Miami Vice. That show was loaded with popular songs.

I guarantee you WKRP will be released, with most of the music intact. Sooner or later, it will happen.

My friend bought the 3 seasons of Roswell, and she said it is actually painful to watch them, because they had to substitute the original songs with some other random crap. So basically, scenes that had so much meaning, that tore at your heart when the music backed up the emotion, are now shallow and empty. It's just wrong. I'd rather not have the DVDs than have them rescored and wrong.

omicron
05-16-2006, 12:59 PM
Pretty good, but I think they rushed it out. Only 2 episode commentaries, and none with Johnny C or Neil Flynn. Still worth having, if only for the best episode "My Screw Up" when Brendan Fraiser's character dies.

I am really looking forward to November 14th when volume 4 of the animated series Family Guy will return on dvd. The second half of the fourth season will be featured. There will be a lot of extras, special features. There is a featurette called "Peter Shin Draws Stewie" that sounds amusing. I loved the episode when Meg worked as Mayor West's intern. I love listening to Adam West doing voice-overs anytime. It sounds like an action-packed journey for fans of Family Guy. :jump2:
