We had a thread at one time but still, there should be a place where we can all just bs around and discuss the movies you've seen that day by any medium...ie, dvd/cable/satelite. Rate them too if you don't feel like posting any commentary about em.
Today so far on satelite:
-The Village
Give it 6/10 for the starring actress alone.
-Love Potion Number 9
5/10. Cute movie, sometimes even funny. Old, though..

Yesterday I watched the first half of Superman III during lunch (and after that, don't know why anyone could complain about the recent Supes movie having a stupid plot). Then last night watched the first 3 eps of "24" season 3. Expect to watch another 4 or 5 tonight--Mr. Neglet is in China for the next week, and Neg Jr. looooooves his "24."

Well today, I watched my Chiefs get their hats handed to em(I know, not a movie...I'm getting there, I'm getting there!)....then, I watched the Niners do pretty decent(still no movies)......then the Manning Bros play each other .....
THEN.....watched the new Hills Have Eyes horror movie out. I've been wanting to see it for sometime after good reviews but finally checked it out tonight. I thought the first 34 minutes was kinda slow and I was wondering "Where is this setup taking me?" and then the horrific scene in the family's winnebego happened. That was some sickening and grotesque shit there, watching that scene unfold...

"New Port South" - a high school flick written by John Hughes's son, James. 75% of a really interesting take on teenage rebellion, with 25% of sheer two-dimensionally written frustration. Still worth a look, though, if you can track it down.

The Black Dhalia.
Great movie.
Except it has nothing to do with The Black Dhalia murder case and suffers from LA Confidential Syndrome. This movie was written by the same dude who did LA Confidential and it shows. Some background is established on cops who will find themselves involved in the main plot device. Cool. Said main plot device is brought in. Cool. After about 15 minutes, said main plot is dropped in favor of lurid B-plots. Not cool. With about 15 minutes left, said main plot is brought back in some contrived fashion to end the movie. Way not cool.
Not to mention that for all it's claims that it's about the real case, it's not. It's based on a book which is a hard-boiled fiction tale about the people around the case, really doesn't show how the case developed and gives us everything wrapped up in a nice little bow. Which is completely the opposite of what happened.
Typical Hollywood.
Rating: Burn some reels of this damn thing if you ever get the chance.

I'm a couple of days behind on this one.
Tuesday, I watched Bourne Identity and on wednesday-Bourne Supremacy. I remember laughing about the ideas of Matt Damon as a spy before the movies came out and I had never read Ludlum's novels so I hadn't a clue on the story concept. That said, they are decent flicks thus far. ("Bourne Identity" and "Bourne Supremacy").
The first movie in the series was entertaining because of sheer casting and the hectic pace of the characters. Doug Liman(director of Identity) did a decent job with the structure of the film...definitely liking the mystery aspect as the beginning rolls with our lead character just floating in the ocean. Obviously, alot of the mystery was already ruined out of the film because of me knowing it was a spy movie beforehand but Damon did a good job keeping me entertained. Great cast too. Damon did good. Ponte was a hot gypsy love interest for the lead and Cooper did a great job as mastermind Conklin. I was also shocked to see Clive Owen in it, forgetting totally that he was one of the "others". He had little dialogue in the film but it was cool seeing him earlier in his career.
Supremacy was much the same as far as entertainment goes. The only thing is I sorta wish I had Doug Liman back in the director's chair for this sequel. I'm not saying Paul Greengrass did a terrible job, it was an entertaining flick..but Greengrass tried too much to focus on the chaotic quickened hectic pace with his filming techniques. It felt too "jerky" to watch at times and the fight scenes could have been better shown to the audiences. That all said, the added storyline as well as great back story on Jason Bourne was very cool and it was definitely worth buying on dvd. Like Clive Owen appearing in the first one as a trained killer, this film shows us an early Karl Urban as the very same. One thing's for sure, this series knows how to pick actors. Definitely liked the fact that Bourne's character went back to Russia to reveal himself and his deeds to the daughter of the Neski couple. Gave some sort of closure to the past which leads me to wonder what the next film, Bourne Ultimatum(2007) will be about. After all, the "real" mastermind Cox is now dead and the Pamela Landy character isn't really a villian.
Still, it should be interesting and these two movies are definitely good films to own, IMO.

Indeed. Thanks for the reminder. I want to watch it again. N
I watched Madagascar this weekend. It was mildly entertaining, but I don't think I'd watch it again. It was really weak for an animated kid's flick, and about 3/4 of the way through, I suddenly realized what the message was. I wasn't expecting one by that point, so it didn't mean very much. I'd give it a 4/10, for the kids.

Saw "Clerks II". Enjoyable enough, but at the end of the 90s I was a huge Kevin Smith fan. Now I just don't give that much of a shit. And whilst the movie got (much) better as it went on, a number of the gags fell completely flat. Hell, I barely laughed at Jay and Silent Bob - and I never thought I'd be saying that. The dramatic stuff in the last third was far more interesting. Although the "Star Wars"/"Lord of the Rings" argument was killer.
Also caught "Taxi 3" on DVD. As cartoonish - and as funny - as the previous two.

Saw "World Trade Center". The reviews had it right for the most part - pretty good, well made and well intentioned, but also often hokey and manipulative. Still worth seeing, though, if you don't mind the TV movie-ish tugging at the heartstrings.

Yeah I saw it over here a couple of months ago, very impressive stuff. The world of martial arts epics mourns Jet Li's decision to retire from the genre though. One thing you can guarantee with an Eastern martial arts flick these days is that somehow Nathan Jones will pop up in the film. I mean he's in this, Warrior King and The Protector. Who would have thought a failed wrestling career and a 20 second cameo in Troy would lead to him getting typecast like this? :smirks:

Saw "The Departed". Pretty damn good, but this being my most anticipated movie of the year, it was something of a disappointment. Possibly because it stuck pretty close to the plot of the original "Infernal Affairs", which meant that the final act didn't provide anywhere near the punch that it did for those who hadn't seen that film.
Plus the trailer contains a shot that kinda sorta indicates the final twist (something that wasn't in the HK original), or at least dampens the surprise.
Deacon
10-08-2006, 02:42 AM
Sort of. The basic plot is covered, but there's still a lot of character stuff that's not revealed. And like I say, if you haven't seen "Infernal Affairs", there're some definite shocks in the plot - the finale provoked some serious gasps at the screening I was at.
Crazy Horse (http://imdb.com/title/tt0115969/) is better.

Which is why the comic had been on the decline for quite a while until the movies -- wait. Didn't they even stop production on it? As in it sucked so bad that no one wanted it? Just because it was done in a comic doesn't mean it's a good step and comic fans realize that.

You're smoking crack.
They've had no less than 5 X-titles in continuous circulation since the early 90's. That's just over ten years if you're counting.

Dude, if you ever read the comic, those characters have died and come back so many times as to make death somewhat redundant.
Well, the comics are mentioning it too. In a recent issue (can't remember which) Wolverine says something to the effect that he'd miss Jean Grey if she'd actually stay dead.
Oh, and the lady doing the research is Dr. Moira MacTaggart, an old flame of Prof. X's.

I was excited of the movie before it came out but it was extremely dissapointing from Zombie.
I really hope Zombie has learned from House and Devils Rejects when applying his knowledge to the remake of Halloween.
If he screws up again, I will have given up on his abilities to direct movies of this genre no matter how much he loves it.

I watched National Treasure. Why? 'Cause it was here and I was sick and didn't feel like going out to get something good.
It should have been a good movie. There was a great cast ... Jon Voight, Christopher Plummer, Sean Bean, even Nick Cage. However, it was predictable and not particularly fun. Even the action sequences were lack luster.
Oh, well. I have Time Bandits to watch again today.
I watched Willow today for about the 100th time. I still really enjoy it. :o I thought the boy would like it, too, with all the little people, brownies, silliness, but he didn't really care. I love Val Kilmer, and the scenery in this movie is just fantastic. The special effects trolls and monster, as well as Razel's transformations really don't hold up at all, though. :ohwell: This is still one of my favorite childhood movies, so I love it, flaws and all.

Just saw "Man of the Year" in the theater yesterday (Neg Jr. insisted). I wouldn't call it a bad movie, but it was a rather weird mix of political satire, political thriller, and romance. Plus the Macguffin for the thriller bit was completely inane if you know anything about computers.

I watched Employee of the Month... I know its a remake, but overall, good date movie, warm hearted... a little predictable and cliche-ish, but Dane Cook was fun to watch in a starring role! Dax Shepard was also HILARIOUS, I think his character would have been the most fun to play. Even though the stereotypical antogonist, he was pretty Effinghilarious! Jessica was alright as well.
NOTE: Movie in general was not as funny as you'd think, with all the comedians surrounding the camera! But worth a viewing!
School for Scoundrals looks pretty good! I want to see The Departed!
Bad(der) Santa is sitting on my shelf. I really wanted to see it, and then when I saw it, I wasn't sure I wanted to repeat the experience. I normally enjoy a filthy, offensive flick now and then, but I think this one may actually have crossed some line. I'll have to watch it again, just to make sure.

It was definitely most disturbing to watch. Billy Bob's character was as lowly as it could be and I couldn't believe the amount of shit he spoke to all the kids in the film. Sometimes it's easy to root on for a dark character but rooting for him made it real hard by his actions in the film.

Not to mention pissing on himself at times...
One things for sure. The character was supposed to be played to portray him having no purpose in life and no reason to live reallly....and Billy Bob portrayed that kind of character perfectly.

Yes, you sick man.
I watched X-Men 2 today. I do really like this one. I remember seeing it in the theater and being really excited about the set-up for the Dark Phoenix storyline.
I have an issue, though. Some of those kids seemed really young. Wasn't it explained that their powers surface during puberty, usually at a time of heightened stress? I would say that more than a few of those children were under 10. Am I wrong?? My favorite parts of this movie are Kurt's assasination attempt and Wolverine protecting the house from the intruders. Once again, I am pissed off about the Anna Paquin/Rogue thing. :romy: For those of you that have heard me bitching about this more than a few times, sorry, I'm still just as pissed. For those of you that haven't, be glad. :ohwell: Scott really didn't get much airtime in this movie either. He was around a little until Charles was snatched, and then he was kept locked up until the climax, where Jean was heading with Magneto and Mystique to stop Charles. I wouldn't have known that though, since poor little Halle was the one bitching about her small role. Anyways.... :wookie:
I really like Storm's hair in this one. WTF was up with her awful hair in 3?

Saw two French films - "District 13", yet another actioner written by Luc Besson; not bad, with great, real stunts, but marred by frenetic editing (and a lack of humour) - and "36", described as being the French version of "Heat", but it's much more than that, and goes in interesting, unusual directions. Plus Daniel Auteil and Gerard Depardieu are superb.

I Think the Frightners was underrated... Wasnt it Peter Jackson's first big budget film? Or something like that... And apparently it was a sleeper due to the fact that it got an R rating and He was desperately going for a pg-13. I think he was trying to make it viewable for all audiences and tackling more than just horror, but comedy and philosophy as well. Danny Elfman did great composing on that one! I am also a big fan of Michael J. Fox, that Parkinson disease really took him out of the hollywood scene, but maybe for a better cause huh?

I was growing tired of Elfman, but hey... I was a socal Orange County beach brat, and Boingo/Elfman was a big part of that time in life. And yes, even tho the Frighteners is 10 years old, it's a typical high quality job by him.
I do think it was his first "big" budget flick (Heavenly Creatures was prior)....I found a lot of it to be a bit overproduced in the way a Joe Dante movie would be, but in the end it was enjoyable, had a good cast, and made me remember what a likeable personality Michael J Fox is, and I miss his presence in entertainment terribly.
Sorry, but after T3, I don't care if they finish the story. They took plenty long enough between 2 and 3 that it should've been the greatest movie ever, and instead it was barely average, with a barely average cast to boot.

I finally watched Underworld:Evolution. I think the story was pretty interesting, although it would've helped considerably if I'd seen the first one somewhat recently. There were a couple things I should've known as they were being mentioned that I didn't get until after the movie was over. There was a hell of a lot more gore than the first one. I think the first movie had the violence at a better level for the film they made. I think the blood and guts in this one overpowers the story a bit. Overall, I enjoyed it. Now I need to watch it again so I know what I saw.

Ok I will fire off some that I think would be good
High Tension, an excellent horror flick made in France
Child's Play 2, one that I love
Blair Witch 2, yeah...
The Gaurdian, 90's film but great!
The Ugly, A great psychological horror
Candy Man, that one is always fun
Then theres always the slective ones like Phantasm, Hellraiser, Puppet Master, and The Dentist.
And lets not forget the master of Horror-Stephen King. Pet Cemetary, Silver Bullet, The Shinning ( there is a new adaptation more accurate to the book with Daniel Webber) Rose Red and Storm of the Century are good, and of coarse the also long but creepy Stephen King's IT.
Recently I liked Silent Hill, The Amity Ville Horro, The Omen. (Last 2 remakes; both are good.)
But steer clear of An American Haunting.... that movie was a waiste of time!
So other than that there are always the classics like Freddy and Jason, one that I find leaves an indelible impression is "Arachnophobia", has a sense of humor to it but your gonna watch Rocky Horror Picture so why not eh?

DaForce, I was actually thinking about In the Mouth of Madness. I saw that one right after I saw Event Horizon, so I was kind of put off by Sam Neil for a while! I'm a huge Lovecraft fan, and ITMOM is a complete homage to his stories, plus it was directed by John Carpenter, so needless to say it scared the crap out of me! I'm seriously considering asking my friend to pick it up at Blockbuster so we can watch it, haven't seen it in years.
I'm bringing all my horror movies, which are a good chunk of my movie collection, and my friend whose house we're doing this at also has a big collection, so we've got quite the selection. Thanks!
Ugh, I hated ITMOM. I saw Event Horizon in the theater and that was a fucking trip I would not like to repeat, so I recommend that one for Halloween viewing. Ditto The Thing with Kurt Russel. Exactly, my dear.
This is a subgenre of movies that I treasure. The big budget self-important box office bomb the raises the bar on badness and camp. A very similar movie of this type would be 1968's Valley of the Dolls. Just without the gratuitous sex and nudity.
There's Beyond The Valley of the Dolls for (a little bit of) that, but that's not unintentionally bad. That was a spoof all the way.

I just watched Alien 3 last night. Which is interesting to watch as an addition to the Alien series, and also David Fincher's first directing. Does anyone know why he likes to make his movies grotesque? Everything up untill Fight Club... but even then there were parts that sickened me... Panic Room was pretty clean.
The day before that I watched For Love or Money, a Michael J. Fox movie, I think it was a sleeper. Also a Barry Sonnenfeld movie... if any of you havnt seen it... its worth a view.

It's my suspicion Alien 3 is what sent him down the darker twisted path.
It was his first feature film but it was a picture he inherited because nobody knew how to make it. His clashes with Fox are well documented.
Don't know which version of A3 you watched but if it left you flat - try the extended version in the Quadrilogy set. It's not a directors cut but a studio cut. It includes some great segments outside ... on the beach and does a better job of establishing the characters.

That IS a much better version of Alien 3, and though it gets a bit repititious toward the end, I thought it was worthy of the trilogy.

Actually I did watch it on the Quadrilogy set, that is a must have for any ALIEN fan. And I only watch the extyended versions for some reason, but oh well. Yeah I think its actually a good movie especially as the third take on the Alien story. I love how the characters evolve slowly as she sits in a prison full of " tough guys" and this Alien just pulls all their heads from their asses. The Alien affects werent bad either.
I just cant stand the grotesque images that to me seem un-necessary, and at points it is hard to understand what they are fuckin saying.
BTW I love the beach shots, mystical. I didnt catch what year they were in.

I hear that. Although Pearlman's comic relief helps you grind through it. Have you watched the making of disc? Lots of subtext in David Giler's comments. I still think it's worth making A5 to wrap it up proper and bring the story full circle with

Casino Royale was great.

But most importantly, yeah.

Went to see Stranger Than Fiction tonight. It was quite funny...the previews were over, the movie was starting, and it said Dreamworks and Aardman. I had no idea Aardman was making live action movies now! And I didn't know STF was set in London. Oh wait, that's not STF...that's Flushed Away!
Half the theater jumped up immediately and ran out to find the right theater. It turns out that STF was showing in the Flushed Away theater, and hadn't quite started yet. So everyone there to see Flushed got really confused about why all these noisy people were storming their theater, then were even more confused to see Will Ferrell. So, about two or three minutes in, the film stopped, management came in and apologized for the mix-up. So it started again about thirty minutes late. Same commercials, same previews.
Other than that excitement, I thought it was an excellent movie.

The "missing production diary" bit is hilarious, monitor addiction is truly a problem! Trying to get around to A History of Violence but haven't found the time yet.
Oh, and Casino Royale rocked. Went to a midnight showing on Thurs. and the theater was completely packed. Everyone applauded when it was over, and I heard several people say they're gonna see it again (myself included). Didn't hurt that the new Spiderman 3 trailer was included as well!

Saw Casino Royale last Friday. I'll agree with UA that this is one of the best Bond films ever. And, yes, Craig is the best Bond since Connery without a doubt. I'll even agree that he rises to the same level as Connery but tie goes to the guy who originated the role.
This is simultaneously one of the most brutal, intriguing, touching, nerve-wracking and exciting Bond films. It's got everything you expect without being cliche about it. A freaking GREAT movie.
Did I mention it's got the most brutal torture-for-info scene ever? Now I did.

Saw Guillermo Del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth". Pretty good, but given my anticipation for it, in part due to the apparent rave reviews it'd already received, I was somewhat disappointed. It's extremely well made, and incredibly atmospheric... but there were stretches where I found my attention wandering, and by the time the movie ended, I was kind of shrugging, as if to say, "Oh - is that it?" Del Toro's an incredible talent, though.

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
Have to say I didn't know what I was getting into with this one but I was curious because Tommy Lee Jones directed. There are no good guys or bad guys - just ordinary people trying to make it in the world and screwing it up as they go along. The Jones character does have personal standards which seems to drive him and the picture. Barry Pepper was good in his role. There's also a Levon Helm cameo. The Tex-Mex scenery adds to the desperation that is part of all of the characters lives.
I give it 2 thumbs up.

Superman 2, the Richard Donner Cut.
I'd been looking forward to this for a long time. Now, after seeing it.... :Dunno:
It's worth a look. Just don't have any expectations. I think they could have done a little better. :(
I'm glad that credit for music goes BACK to John Williams, and all of Ken Thorne's score was scrapped, it was like a midi version of Williams' original. HOWEVER...at every turn, William's original score has been edited and truncated.
The use of CGI to correct a couple of hideously bad effects from the original thetrical version work well, and they stated that any new effects had to have the look of a movie made at that time, not a 2006 ver 2.0.
Long awaited scenes with Brando are hit and miss. Maybe Supe's conversation with Lara (Susanna York) in the Lester Vesrion wasn't so bad after all, except for the reality that they were a refilmed goof, and any scenes that DID require Brando used an unnamed disembodied male voice.
The movie is still a mess. It was in the theaters, it was on tv (with many Donner scenes returned to the movie to make its running time longer), and it is here.
Something wrong with the sound, too. Sounded cheap.

Just bought the Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition set and OMG is it amazing. It's gonna take me forever to get through all the different versions of the films, not to mention all the special features.
Watched Superman IV with friends cause I hadn't seen it, and it actually wasn't too bad. Better than III definitely. I mentioned to my friend that Nuclear Man is kind of a spin on Bizarro. Imagine my surprise when we watched the deleted scenes and there's an entire part of the film (like a 10-15 minute chunk) where Lex creates a prototype Nuclear Man who is pretty much Bizarro sans the whole parallel Earth thing (basically a retarded Superman), but Supes defeats him easily. I think they cut it because it's too comical and would have brought down the more serious tone of the film.
Also watched the George Reeves serial Superman vs. the Mole Men which was ok and "Look Up In the Sky: The Story of Superman" documentary by Brian Singer and Kevin Burns. Really really good, there's so much of Supes' past I didn't know. Take the SuperPup TV pilot. Imagine a live-action version of Superman, except all the characters are dogs played by midgets with giant dog heads. I sh*t you not! Also the TV musical from the 70s with Leslie Ann Warren (Miss Scarlet in Clue) as Lois Lane, that is some crazy sh*t right there.
If you don't have this set yet, I highly recommend shelling out the 70 bucks at Best Buy before it goes back up to $100. One of the best DVD sets in a very long time!

The Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy. First time I've watched it, and it wasn't bad.
I've never been a fan of the books (mostly due to the over explanation in description in the narrative, which I found annoying), I never heard the radio program, and I never saw the tv series. I kind of relugated this series to the same realm as Dr. Who (which I never understood the appeal of) and The Lord of the Rings trilogy or world. Both of which were (in my mind) obsessed over by fans to a degree that made me cringe in fear.
Anyway, I liked the movie. It was fun, and the visuals were pretty cool. It was a neat little message that I'd like to see the sequels to in the future.
I first read the HG when I was 8 or 9. I reread them at about 14, and it started to make sense. I reread them all again a couple of years ago, and I swear I laughed out loud at least once a page. I thought the movie was ok, but it wasn't great. They tried really hard to take what was in the book and put it onscreen, but it just didn't hold up all that well. I don't know if I'd like to see Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

Julianne Moore is gross. And painful to watch. ~shudder~
As far as HG... I really didn't go for the casting. I loved Alan Rickman as Marvin, but everyone else was less than memorable. The guy who played Arthur was good enough. He was average, and that's what Arthur was supposed to be. I didn't like what they did with Ford. He just wasn't right. I appreciate the fact that they actually made Zaphod insane, but to get whathisface to play him just because he's played a few crazies doesn't make me believe it. I don't know. I would've rather seen a little more effort go into casting than special effects.

I liked Ford -- it was interesting having Mos Def play him. Initially, I didn't like how they handled Zaphod's second head, but understood the budgetary need to do it that way; and in the end, thought it come over fairly well.

He wasn't blatantly weird in the BBC show, so I guess that tempered it a bit for me.
The books are different than the radio show, which are different than the TV show, which are different than the game, which is different than the movie. I don't really have any problem with this. The major problem I have with the movie is that not enough people saw it.
I just rewatched The Adventures of Ford Fairlane (http://www.thrillingdetective.com/virtual/www.thrillingdetective.com/fairlane.html). I really do love a craptastic movie that doesn't try to be good. Not even a little.

I'm watching a really funny movie, The Last Shot (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0357054/) with Matthew Broderick, Alec Baldwin, Toni Collette, Tony Shaloub, Joan Cusack, Calista Flockhart, Ray Liotta, Pat Morrita and so on... The story is about an FBI agent (Baldwin) who poses as a producer to setup a sting for mob bosses in Rhode Island. Broderick is a guy that has a script that Baldwin "buys" to make into a movie. The whole thing snowballs and gets bigger and bigger as they near the end of production. Supposedly based on the true story of how the FBI took down John Gotti.
So far, two things that have made me laugh out loud were Toni Collette's unsolicited urine sample taken at the dinner table of an expensive restaurant, and Joan Cusack's crash course to the FBI agents in how to be the 'big dog' in Hollywood. "Clifford the big red dog with those big red balls."

V is in my Top 5 for the year, probably my Top 3 but I haven't really sat down and thought any order out. Great film. If there's any justice, 10 or 20 years from now, you'll be able to say "V For Vendetta was a great film. It really dove into a lot of important philosophical issues that hadn't really even been touched since Orwell's 1984 was made into a movie" and people will know exactly what movie you're talking about and why.
To put it another way, my girlfriend is not into much sci-fi, action or politics in her movies and she absolutely loves V because it so intelligent about the issues it raises, doesn't treat its viewers like simpletons and doesn't view the fictional victims contained therein as more or less a victim than anyone else. It puts down its foot and says such a turn would be a tragedy for everyone whether they like each other or not.
