So I 've been watching the the Yanks play tonight after a 13 hour day and of work and it may be that I'm super tired and grumpy but does anyone hate to listen Tim MacCarver as much as I do?

Yankees lead Tigers 1-0.
A's lead Twins 1-0.
Cards lead Padres 1-0.

So far, I'm behind in all of my picks. :(

I was surprised by the Cards, frankly. They tanked the second half of the season so bad(almost as bad as my goddamn Reds!!:romy: ) that I thought they'd have no chance. Guess it's still early, but they looked decent.

I would just like to say 2 things:

1) Anyone else notice the chick was the only one to a) do better than .500 in her first round picks and b) still have both WS teams still in it?

2) What was number 2 again? Oh, right.

GOOOOOOOOOOO TIGERS!

Well, the Cardinals surprised me by waking up from their slump at just the right time. The Twins surprised me by going into a slump at just the right time. My WS is toast, so I'll make new predictions.

AL
Detroit Tigers over Oakland A's.

NL
St. Louis Cardinals over NY Mets.

World Series
Detroit over St. Louis.

Can't believe the Tigers came back from being down 3 runs today and took it. I knew they'd win the series after going up like that but coming back to sweep it was cool to watch.

Ivan Rodriguez took a young pitching staff in Florida and took them to the WS and then to victory over the Yankees.

Ivan Rodriguez has now took a young pitching staff in Detroit and took them to the WS and then........<to be seen later>

Oakland A's out without so much as a whimper. Detroit's in the Series, riding a seven game winning streak.

The Cards take the lead over the Mets, 2-1.

Goooooooooo TIGERS!!!

Unless you happen to be a fan of whatever NL team plays in the World Series, you'd have to be a scrooge not to root for the Tigers to win. Come on, this team hadn't been above .500 for 13 years! Three years ago they challenged for the MLB single-season record for losses! If they can turn it around, it's possible for anyone!

... except maybe the Cubbies. Still, you get my drift: rooting against Detroit this year is like hoping Cinderella's stepsister marries the prince.

DarkJedi

It would fit into the theme of baseball, Negs.

Marlins
Red Sox
White Sox
Tigers

I might just root for them purely for amazement out of what Pudge Rodriguez has done to his teams since leaving the Rangers.

If they can turn it around, it's possible for anyone!... except maybe the Cubbies.

Oooh, that single statement just made me want to root for the NL team. Hissssssssssss. :angry

But, if the Tigers do take it, it goes along with my theory of things leading towards the apocalypse in 2008. The Red Sox in 2004, the White Sox in 2005, the Tigers in 2006, maybe the Devil Rays or Royals in 2007, and the Cubs in 2008, 100 years after their last World Series victory.

Don't get me wrong, it would be great to see the Cubbies win a World Series, but like you said ... a sign of the apocalypse.

Devil Rays? Don't make me laugh, they haven't been around long enough to merit a pity World Series appearance.

The Royals, though, there's a classy old team (George Brett still one of my favorite all-time players) that has fallen on severe hard times, and thus it would be great to see them turn it around.

The other thing about the Tigers this year is that no one here expected more than maybe a +.500 season, so everything has been such a wonderful surprise--and in a state where the economy has been struggling, people are really embracing the team.

Actually, I saw one commentator suggest that the Tigers playoff run could help the incumbent goveror get re-elected, since people won't be paying attention to anything but baseball until the Series is over, and that favors the incumbent. (Which is fine by me, I don't like the challenger at all.)

Hehehe... no apocalypse. True Cubs fans know it won't happen. A coworker of mine is a Cub fan from Chicago and his family is planning a "100 years of losing" party for '08 where the entire family will head back to Chicago to commiserate during the World Series. Why am I wanting to misspell Chicago as "Shicago" right now?

As for a team that needs to win the Series, my Giants haven't won one since two years before they left New York. That means 1954 for those not in the know. I think the Giants will win it in '08 or '09.

Completely off post topic (but not thread topic), about the A's I will only say this. The last time they were in the World Series, they got whupped by the Reds 4-0. When explaining why they lost, Dave Stewart gave simultaneously the greatest and lamest quote explaining why they lost:

"It all boils down to we didn't play good."

Tigers/Cardinals in the Series. Tigers swept in, Cardinals took seven games. Very odd that the two teams that struggled the most down the stretch are in the World Series.

yeah, I never thought Cards had a chance, the way they stumbled through most of the regular season. Guess it just goes to show it's not how you play through season, it's how you finish the season.

The Tigers looked a bit tight. I'll expect them to perk up for Game 2, and Kenny Rogers to come through with another pitching gem.

If it doesn't get rained out. Clouds look icky here today.

Trust me, I am well aware of how quickly the Cardinals can self destruct. The 2004 World Series comes to mind. At least I got to see the NLCS Game 7 that year in person. That was a lot of fun. :D

Apparently the first two times these teams met, the winner of the series was pivotal on the outcome of Game 4, and it wasn't a positive correlation:

1934: St. Louis loses game 4. St. Louis wins The World Series
1968: Detroit loses game 4. Detroit wins The World Series.

This doesn't bode well for St. Louis.

Strider
10-27-2006, 10:27 AM
Bode well?

It's happened only twice (and many, many years ago at that). That doesn't even make an interesting pattern, let alone have any impact on the current matchup. It's just another example of a pointless stat that means absolutely nothing.

Yes, I realize I am being redundant.

Ah well, I can't say I'm too disappointed. (Although I do wish there hadn't been so many pitcher errors, to see if they could play more up to their potential.)

After all, if you'd told me in April that the Tigers would even make the playoffs, let alone the World Series, I would have thought you were very very optimistic. Now I can't wait for next season!
