I don't know why no one's started a thread for this year yet--maybe it's because 2006 hasn't exactly overwhelmed us with super duper movies. Anyway, here's my list so far:
1. Little Miss Sunshine--funny take on families without being sentimental. (Plus, Steve Carell can do no wrong.)
2. Superman Returns--a romantic superhero movie? I really liked it.
3. A Prairie Home Companion--Altman, interesting characters, lots of fine acting.
4. Invincible--great story, Mark Wahlberg very appealing. Plus, it's football!
5. Monster House--the best kids' movie this year, smart and spooky.
6. X-Men: The Last Stand--too short to be really satisyfing.
7. Hoodwinked--clever, Rashomon-style retelling of Red Riding Hood, plus great Ben Folds song!
8. Poseidon--I'm a sucker for disaster flicks, and the visuals & sound were great.
9. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest--entertaining, but not a complete story.
10. Ice Age: The Meltdown--if only for the sections with Scrat, the squirrel.
Honorable Mention: Over the Hedge (more Ben Folds!, good voice work, predictable story), Snakes on a Plane (dumb, forgettable fun), Hoot (decent translation of kid's book)
Dishonorable Mention: Talladega Nights (Gary Cole the only clever thing about this predictable Will Farrell vehicle.)

This is a list of my favorite films this year. They are in order of the enjoyment I got out of them, not in order of "quality".
1. Pirate's of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - I'm a huge fan of the first film, and I was not disappointed with the sequel. :D
2. Little Miss Sunshine - A fun little film that came from nowhere.
3. Underworld: Evolution - Vampires. Werewolves. Flying villain. Shotguns. Leather. Kate Beckinsale...in shiny leather...:D
4. Inside Man - A very good caper movie with great performances from Clive Owen and Denzel Washington.
5. Mission Impossible 3 - Lots of explosions, espionage, Michelle Monaghan...'nuff said.
6. X-Men: Last Stand - Despite being a flawed film, I still enjoyed the mutant mayhem. I especially liked seeing Iceman finally "ice up", even if just for a moment.
7. V For Vendetta - Not the best thing since sliced comic bread (as some would have you believe), but still a very well-made film with loads of eye candy and a good story.
8. Snakes on a Plane - A really crappy movie, but it has Sam Jackson and snakes...what more do you need?
9. Monster House - While the animation technique still needs a lot of tweaking, the story itself was very enjoyable and fairly imaginative.
10. Superman Returns - I was very disappointed with the film, but it was still enjoyable enough to include here.
Semi-honorable mention: Cars & Ice Age: The Meltdown - Both of these had some good parts to them (props to the broadway vultures from Ice Age), but they were still big letdowns compared to the previous work by both studios.
I expect this list to change drastically once I get to see films such as The Departed, The Illusionist, The Prestige, Babel, Children of Men, Casino Royale, The Fountain, Pan's Labyrinth, Flushed Away, and Charlotte's Web...just to name a few.
Wow. I am really slacking on movies this year. I'm going to have to blame it on motherhood. I can't vote, because I've only seen X-3 this year.

A few of mine are technically 2005 releases, but since they didn't get over here until this year...
1) "United 93". Hands down the best film of the year. Unlike anything else out there.
2) "Good Night, and Good Luck". God bless the Clooney.
3) "Children of Men". Brilliantly directed blend of sci-fi, drama and thriller.
4) "Syriana". See number 2.
5) "Munich". Like most Spielberg movies, it has its flaws, but it's still intelligent, thought-provoking stuff.
6) "Inside Man". Disappointing ending, but huge fun up until that point.
7) "X-Men: The Last Stand". Much better than I thought it'd be.
8) "Day Watch". "Night Watch" was fun, but this is much better.
9) "Mission: Impossible III". Not the slam dunk it could've been, but still lots of fun.
10) "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance". Interesting revenge movie; not up to "Oldboy" standards though.

4. Over the Hedge
5. V For Vendetta
6. POTC2
7. X3
8. A Scanner Darkly
I really didn't see a lot of movies this year. I really skimpped on seeing a lot of indies, and a lot of the 'dramas' this year left me cold. Just not a lot of quality out there, as far as I was concerned, so mainly my list is made up of a lot of light fare with a few notable exceptions.

I'm also lacking in the "Going to the Theatres" department so I will list what the movies I've seen so far...Keep in mind I haven't seen POTC2, Superman, MI3, or Miami Vice...
1. 16 Blocks-Definitely a great movie and must see. Short but sweet film with great cast too
2. The Hills Have Eyes- I'm a horror fan and I have to say I really enjoyed this remake. One scene alone about 50 minutes in made me want to hurl in horror. It was sickening so job well done on the horror front.
3. V for Vendetta-I know it can be kind of preachy(especially for a Republican like me) but the acting performances was very well done and Portman kicked some acting ass in this film.
4. Lucky Number Slevin- Very well done story. A fun ride and enjoyable to see Kingsley, Freeman, Willis, and Tucci in this flick.
5. Xmen 3:Last Stand- Fun, popcorn eating, action packed ride.
6. Underworld: Evolution- Kate B is one hot lady! :D Like Xmen, it's a fun ride and I like where they're expanding on the first one's story and adding alittle more intriquing stuff to boot.
I need to see Over The Hedge, POTC2, The Guardian, MI3, The Departed, and Supes very soon.

Just watched Slither...so I most definitely have to update my list to include this awesome fuckin montage of humor and horror...
1. The Prestige- I'll put down my review of it later but I definitely liked it.
2. Slither- Oh dear lord. As a horror fan, Gunn the director certainly knows how to show some "love" to this genre and it's fans. From references to The Thing to Predator to Night of the Living Creeps to Romero's Dead movies...this movie is pure fun at it's core.
3.16 Blocks-Definitely a great movie and must see. Short but sweet film with great cast too
4. V for Vendetta-I know it can be kind of preachy(especially for a Republican like me) but the acting performances was very well done and Portman kicked some acting ass in this film.

5. Little Miss Sunshine
6. Underworld: Evolution
7. Inside Man
8. Mission Impossible 3
9. X-Men: Last Stand
10. Slither - This is a very fun horror/comedy. Nathan Fillion and Gregg Henry have the best lines.

Really with the V for Vendetta...ugh. ;)
Here are mine
Departed - Great remake, great acting, Wahlberg was hilarious.
Little Miss Sunshine - Just saw it. Funny, poignant (sp?) the type of movie that the Academy likes lol.
Inside Man- Spike lee gets better with age, Clive Owen is super cool, maybe too cool to ever play Bond.
Breakup-Great flick! Not a romantic comedy, but funny nonetheless. Vince Vaughn is awesome and Jennifer Anniston is likeable enough to have me in her camp for the Brad v Jen wars :)
Underworld Evolution-Yeah people say this is Werewolf vs Vampires, but really it stopped being that at the end of 1. It's now become this insane monster movie with hybrid amalgams running around shooting guns. I was so surprised by this flick, violent, action packed, Wonderful!
Distric B13-Luc Besson is still on his producing binge and this time comes up with a pleasant surprise. Low budget french actioner makes you want to take to the roof and jump from building to building daredevil style!
MI:3 - Good enough to make you forget how completely bonkers that Tom Cruise is....well...almost. Loved the amount of action, though it crescendos and dips for the last scene (which is weird). The ending is dumb but otherwise really cool flick.
She's the Man - What? WHAT? lol. I can't help it, this was hilarious and cute and places Amanda Bines at the top of the list for the "Next Julia Roberts award" It made me laugh multiple times, surprisingly, and just was a fun movie above the fold for teen romance/comedies.
Night Watch - Something different. Russian take on supernatural things, that was just interesting and slanted compared to the usual american fare.
And 10. Well....I can't think of anything that stood out..except for the DVD release of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang...so goooood it hurts me.[/B]

New Number One demands a new list:
1. Casino Royale--unquestionably my favorite film of the year, maybe the past two. Possibly the best Bond ever.
2. Little Miss Sunshine
3. Stranger Than Fiction--clever concept, Will Farrell doesn't strip to his underwear, and Emma Thompson is fantastic
4. Superman Returns
5. A Prairie Home Companion
6. Invincible
7. Monster House
8. X-Men: The Last Stand
9. Hoodwinked
10. Poseidon
Honorable Mention: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Ice Age: The Meltdown, Over the Hedge, Man of the Year (not bad, but a strange mishmash of genres), Snakes on a Plane, Hoot
Dishonorable Mention: Talladega Nights

1. The Departed
2. The Fountain - This is a much different film than Requiem was. It is also much different than "normal" Hollywood fare. It also happens to be one of the best films of the year. If for nothing else, see the film for its beautiful imagery (both figurative and literal) and great performances. You'll have to turn on your brain (mindless action, this is not), but I promise it is well worth it, even if you come out not understanding any of it.
3. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
4. The Prestige
5. Flushed Away

8. Inside Man

2. United 93 - Dark Horse for Best Pict Nominee
3. Miami Vice - One of the most visually satisfying films in years
4. Casino Royale - Craig, Daniel Craig
5. Superman Returns - Kevin Spacey rocks.
6. Mission Impossible 3 - Only because of JJ Abrams and Philip Seymour Thomas
7. Clerks II - Kevin Smith returns to form
8. Pirates of the Caribbean II - Way too long. Only Johnny Depp keeps it in the top
ten.
8. Inside Man - Spike Lee and Denzel Washington - Bring out the best in each other
9. X-Men III - Hugh Jackman and Ian McKellan keep this from being laughed off the

10. V for Vendetta - Just b/c Natalie had that damn sexy accent
Dishonorable Mention - Da Vinci Code - Stellar Cast, bad hairstylist and I hate hate hate Akiva Goldsmith:Tongue:

18. Superman Returns: I only watched half, but that was plenty, thank you. The visual effects were really neat, but Routh's acting was like climbing into a lukewarm bathtub or like eating a Saltine without the salt. :OhWell: Kevin Spacey- give me a break. Jimmie Olson- whoever the hell that was.... again, boring. WTF is up with this movie? Did they really spend 300 million dollars to do a bland remake of Superman? It wasn't even that the dialogue was so terrible, or that the story was horrendous, which they weren't, well- they could've been worse. It was the actors. I've never seen actors put so little emotion into their work before, and it was exceedingly painful to watch.
165. Ultraviolet- Dad, my eyes are still bleeding. Thanks a lot.

Finally saw X3. Yup, it did indeed suck. They took what Singer had established with the first two X films, layer and topical resonance, and preplaced with empty, over the top theatrics. They SHAT on one of the greatest comics stories ever, certainly one of the best X-Men tales ever, that being the Dark Phoenix story. And since when has Juggernaut been a mutant? Further, the FX for him blew. Guy in foam rubber? Looked puny as hell.
Bad, bad, bad...

I'm watching Babel, and it's boring the hell out of me.
The Japanese girl is the only interesting story for me, and not just because she shows her cooter.
Otherwise, I'm basically bored with less than 30 minutes remaining.
[edit] I want those two+ hours back!

These wont be in specific order:
1. Pans Labyrinth (visually stimulating and very well done story)
2. Children of Men (one of the most intriging films i have ever seen)
3. Little Miss Sunshine (a true story of an american family)
4. The Departed (for me, one of scorcese's best)
5. Apacolypto (awesome story, and mel gibson and his drinking for me did not damage this flick at all)
6. Stranger Than Fiction( will farrel shows us that he can act and be in a decent movie. This was well written, directed and acted)
7. Clerks 2 (i was laughing nonstop with the whole movie. I cant stop watching that film and was a little sad knowing we wouldnt see randall or dante anymore)
8. The Da Vinci Code (no i have not read the book, but i really really enjoyed this movie)
9. The Hills Have Eyes ( Nice remake from craven's classic, it easily stands on its own)
10. A Scanner Darkly ( if this movie was filmed in any other format, it would not have worked)
Im sure there were others that i liked but when it came down to it, these were the ones i enjoyed the most and have in my collection, except for the 4 that havent come out yet.

Not in any particular order.

3. The Departed
4. The Prestige
5. Little Miss Sunshine
6. The Descent
7. Superman Returns
8. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

10. And because I can't think of another good choice from the films I actually saw this year, I'm adding Oldboy to the list because I just bought the special edition about a month ago and that film rocks!
This list would be much longer but for some reason I missed most of the good movies in theaters this year and have to wait for DVD.

hmmmmm Great post idea.
Seems hard to pick ten that I would consider for this list. The first few were easy then it got tough.
1. The Departed --- Hands down best flick of the year.
2. Casino Royal ---drooling to see it and it still managed to live up to the hype.
3. Talladego Nights ---Still laugh my butt off when i pop this movie in
4. Xmen: the last stand ----Solid 3rd film. Did not let down.
5. United 93 ---- intense
6. Beerfest --- a big surprise laugh outloud wit your friends
7. Underworld -- just a big fan of the concept
8. Fearless - plain solid action ( tho, I am impressed w/how many of you saw B13
9. Hidden Blade -- (same director that did Twighlight Samuri)
10. Descent-- stole this from some of you cause I forgot about it. But it may have been a bigger surprise for than Beerfest. (good call guys)

1) Pan's Labyrinth
2) Departed
3) Children of Men
4) A Scanner Darkly
5) The Prestige
6) Casino Royale
7) Talladega Nights
8) V for Vendetta
9) Borat
10) Crank
The only members of this list I'm absolutely certain of are the top 3, which I'm not certain that's the order I even want to put them in. The remaining seven are just a collection of movies off the top of my head that I really enjoyed a great deal. Also, I should point out that I have yet to see United 93 or The Fountain, which I suspect would find their way on this list if I had.
