Interesting, yes? I mean, the guy pitched great after he washed that stuff off. However, on ESPN.com, they reviewed game video from his starts against the A's and Yankees and found that "substance" on his hand. Uh oh.

Rogers says it was just dirt. Ahem....

Oh well, go Tigers.

regardless, after the second inning it was gone, and he still proceeded to mow down the Cards for 8 innings.

I think ESPN is trying to create an incident and big story here. Tony LaRussa has even said it was no big deal.

ESPN was calling it dirt gate or something within minutes after the game was concluded while no participants in the game(umpires, Cardinals, Tigers, etc) seemed not to care at all about it.

The truth is, most ball players have superstitions...Kenny Rogers would not be in trouble for getting his hands dirty on something "lucky" for a superstitious behavior before each game. Espn was also saying how "any foreign substance" signifies he should have got kicked out. Dirt or muddy substance is not a foreign substance. Anything that can be touched on a ball field isn't foreign according to the rules.

If Rogers was using Pine Tar or any other known actual foreign substances, the Head Ump would have certainly noticed on discarded balls to the plate..Like Omi says, the lucky dirt was off his hand after the second and it didn't stop him from pitching 8 shutout innings. Tony Larussa and the Cardinals know this so they know it's no big deal.

Sometimes, ESPN needs to just cover the story and stop trying to "create" one.

Here is what I think is the best quote of the whole thing.

"It could have been anything on his hand. It could have been chocolate cake."
-- Tigers closer Todd Jones

As if chocolate cake is a big pregame meal for pro athletes, maybe it is for Jones who looks like he has had a slice or two in his time.

Maybe he forgot to wash his hand after he went potty.

Chocolate cake isn't a performance enhancer?

How long has this been going on?

With baseball players, anything is a performance enhancer in their superstitious minds.

Chocolate cake could work in some ball players minds. :)

Maybe he forgot to wash his hand after he went potty.
Are you saying his version of the spitball is "the shitball?"
