If ever a movie need an extended version this it. It's easily one of McTiernan's best movies and when I saw it in the theatre I didn't want it to end. It's a shame this came out before LOTR as those movies have given the green light for lengthy fantasy movies.
I love the characters in this movie and even Banderas is exceptional in it.
It's one of the rare modern-era action action/fantasy movies that I really can't fault in acting, story, cinematography and score. In fact, it excells in all areas.
I want an extended Director's cut on this bad boy more than any other movie in the last 10 years. More Buliwyf!

I'd love to see it too, but I don't see it happening. As much as the studios love to release so-called extended versions of movies (Disney has new cuts of "Crimson Tide" and "Enemy of the State" coming up), getting McTiernan's version back would probably mean too much work for a movie that flopped at the box-office.

Plus, if you're attached to Jerry Goldsmith's score, then the original version would be a disappointment, since it was accompanied by Graeme Revell's music.

It'd be interesting to see, though, given that Crichton made so many changes, whose cut was more entertaining.

Wow. I didn't know that there was any controversy surrounding this flick. I think I recall it being a McTiernan film, but that's probably about it. I had downloaded a very early teaser trailer when it was still called Eaters of the Dead, and then heard nothing for, what...over a year? When I saw new trailers come out and it was renamed, I just wrote it off and still haven't seen it.

What's the lowdown on the issues w/ production and Crichton/McTiernan?

The movie didn't do well in test screenings, so Crichton took over and did re-editing and re-shooting. Which explains why the opening section of the movie moves ridiculously fast and omits a lot of story (covered by Banderas's voiceover).

Plus there's always been a rumour that Schwarzenegger shot a cameo for the film, but it's never been proven.

I actually saw this one in the theaters because some friends wanted to see it and, if it wasn't for the absolute lack of a story or a reason to care about anyone in the movie or any understanding of who the enemy was, I think I could have enjoyed this one a hell of a lot more than I expected to.
