It's the road to Armageddon! Er, I mean, the greatest rivalry in college football is scheduled to take place in two weeks with #1 OSU vs. #2 Michigan, and it's never too early to start trash talking.

I give you reason number 1 why the Wolverines will be victorious--because Capt. Picard has ordered it!

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y116/neglet/umtrek.jpg
Actor Patrick Stewart -- currently in town with the Royal Shakespeare Company, but perhaps better known for a television role as Capt. Jean Luc Picard in "Star Trek: The Next Generation'' -- served as a guest conductor at halftime as the Michigan marching band played the theme from "Star Trek.''

Picard then delivered his signature line from the series, urging Michigan, "To boldly go and beat the Buckeyes ... make it so, No. 1.''

I'm just ticked off I missed seeing it--I gave up my tickets because I was working/competing at my TKD studio's tournament. :romy:

bah you can have Picard, we had one of the greatest golfers of all time dot the I (http://www.thegolfblog.com/2006/10/jack-nicklaus-dots-i-in-script-ohio.html).

Still, both our teams had a little scare this weekend.

Oh and just to make sure you remember what's what.

Ohio State unanimous No. 1 (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2650594). They got all 65 #1 votes.:Mwahaha:

Jon Stewart and the Daily Show were in Ohio last week and he made a great comment about the rivalry.

"Honestly, the Ohio/Michigan rivalry is like Sunni-Shi'ite. It's insane."

It's from part 1 of Thursday show, on comedycentral.com

I saw that segment. When Dan Bakkedahl showed up wearing the beer hat and the giant "O" painted on his bare chest I laughed so hard I started choking.

And Armageddon is on schedule! I'll be hosting a party for several Wolverine fanatics and their offspring. I'm sure many blue daquiris will be consumed. :)

Not sure what I am going to do for that game. Probably just head over to my Uncle's house and watch it in hi-def. Maybe we'll have Skyline chilidogs for that official Ohio taste.

Okay, but no matter what the outcome of the game, I'm sure I could beat you in a belching contest.

Appears the american public isn't as dumb as I thought they were.

58%-42% think OSU is going to win (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/fp/flashPollResultsState?pollId=40244) :Smirk:

neglet

Just goes to prove the American public is misinformed. While it may look like the Buckeyes have advantage at home and in statistics, I look at each team's signature win this season. OSU beat Texas at Texas, 24-7. It was an impressive win, but Texas's loss this weekend makes lessens the achievement somewhat.

Now, Michigan's big win this season was at Notre Dame, 47-21. They dominated what is now the #5 team in the country. I think there will be a close, hard-fought game this weekend, but I really think Michigan will win.

was listening to Mike and Mike on Espn radio this morning and their question was would rather win this game or win the national championship? According to their poll, 80% of fans would rather win this game and lose a national championship.

Reminds me of the old saying. We can go 1-11 as long as that win is against Michigan.

Did you see any of the Miami-BGSU game last night? This is why I love college football:

A little boy and his mother were walking through a Michigan cemetery, when they came upon a headstone that read: "Here lies a Michigan graduate and a good man." The little boy asked his mother, "Mommy, why did they bury two people in there?"

Sad note: Former Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler has died (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2665857)

Will the added emotion help or hurt UM this weekend?

neglet
11-17-2006, 11:30 AM
Wow. This makes me very sad. Bo was not just a winner, he was a class act all the way.

Like this game needed any more emotion or hype. Honestly, I don't think the team needed any extra motivation, so I don't think "win it for Bo" will make a difference.

Twas the night before Michigan and all round the shoe
not a creature was sleeping, they were screaming Beat Blue.

The banners were hung by the lamp post with care
in hopes that St. Troy would find Ginn through the air.

Drunken and crazy and burning their beds,
while visions of kick off danced through their heads.

When all of the sudden there arose such a clatter
I sprang from the keg to see what was the matter.

When there in the sky, in a Coupe DeVille sleigh,
was Woody Hayes decked out in scarlet and gray.

He looked on the crowd that was gathered around
and said I just heard that the game was in town.

"I came here to watch it and wish you good luck,
though it's not like you need it because MICHIGAN SUCKS!!!"

You started it.

Liquidate Ohio State and turn the Buckeyes blue.
They breed a lot of cattle in Columbus,
It looks just like a zoo.

Knock them off their ivory towers,
Send them crawling into the showers,
Down with Ohio State,
It’s a know-nothing party school.

They say the girls who go to O.S.U.,
Are husband hunting dames,
They dig the jocks who got the killer instinct,
Not the boys with brains.

At Columbus you’re way ahead,
With straight A’s in Physical Ed,
Down with Ohio State,
It’s a know-nothing party school.

So, Michigan is still #2 in the BCS standings. Could a rematch actually happen? Let's see who's left to play:

#3 USC: still to play Notre Dame and UCLA. If they win both, I think they're in the title game. If they lose one (and it's possible), they're in the Rose Bowl.

#4 Florida: still to play Florida State and Arkansas in the SEC Championship. If they win both and USC loses one, hard to argue against them.

#5 Notre Dame: even if they beat USC in their last game, and FLA loses, how can you say they deserve it over a UM team that beat them by 26 at home?

#6 Arkansas: they have a strong case if they finish with wins against #9 LSU and #4 FLA. But that may not be enough to overcome early big loss against USC if USC doesn't falter.

#7 West Virginia: final games against South Florida and #14 Rutgers. But parity at the top of the Big East doesn't make the conference look any stronger this year.

#8 Wisconsin: underrated, but 0 wins against ranked teams. Plus they lost to Michigan.

#9 Louisville: still to play Pitt and Connecticut. Big whoop. See comments for WV.

The following scenario isn't impossible:

USC loses to ND but beats UCLA.
FLA loses to ARK in the SEC title game.
ARK loses to LSU but beats FLA in the SEC title game.

In that scenario, you could end up with the only 0- or 1-loss teams as Michigan, ND, WV or Rutgers, Louisville, Wisconsin, and Boise State. In that situation, what would you rather see: a OSU-UM rematch on neutral territory, or OSU against a team that Michigan beat (ND/WI) or a team from a weak conference who has no chance of making it a competitive game? A rematch isn't unprecedented: in 1996, the Bowl Alliance rematched Florida and FSU.

I know what the networks would choose: this weekend's UM/OSU game earned the highest regular season ratings in more than 10 years.

omicron

Well, it's looking very possible that UM will get a rematch with THE Ohio State University.

neglet
12-04-2006, 06:55 AM
No, as soon as Florida won the SEC title I knew they'd be in against OSU. I think it's only right; they won a tough conference, had only one loss, and Michigan already had their chance to beat OSU. Besides, imagine OSU beat Michigan again, and Florida won their bowl game, how much whining we'd hear from the SEC that the BCS screwed them again. It's worth it not to hear whining.

Plus, this way OSU will stomp on Florida (Florida's offense isn't that good, and nobody's defense can stop Troy Smith), and Michigan will show USC for the pretenders they are (losses to Oregon State and UCLA, and they're number 5?), and the Big Ten will finish #1 and #2.

Oh, and we don't graduate our starting quarterback or running back this year. :D

Hart is likely to come back, too, which means aside from one or two lineman and one of the three TEs we've used this year, the whole offense is returning.

Sweet mother of God that Boise State game was phenomenal. Anybody else watch that?

I don't see how they can continue to make the argument against a playoff system for the national title. I mean really...if anything, don't games like this prove that anything can happen?

I LOVE the trick plays. The lateral to tie the game was amazing, and that two point conversion fake!!! Brilliant!

I don't get into much football except for THE Ohio State University, but there were some great games this week.

The Sooners game I watched cause my boss is a big fan, and it was an amazing finish. I watched the Texas Tech game and they staged the biggest comeback in bowl history. Some really good games.

Against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Thanks for reminding me.

At least it finally got that jackass Glen Mason fired. ARrrggggh...

And yeah, wasn't the OU/BSU game amazing? They won it with a fucking statue of liberty play!

And it's Florida in a thumping over OSU. Congrats to them and their fans.

Now also marks the point where we ought to hear a LOT of noise about a playoff system for the title. More so than usual.

Why? Because Boise State had a lot of tricks up their sleeve against Oklahoma.

Just watch and enjoy.

Yeah, when I turned off the game and went upstairs (at 41-14, urgh) I was thinking that Boise State had a pretty good argument for being considered #1, as they're the only team without a loss. With both Michigan and OSU losing in blowouts, it's going to be interesting to see what the final rankings are.

Adam54
01-09-2007, 02:53 PM
Boise is 5th in the writer's poll, and 6th in the coach's poll.

......

I guess...I don't know. I get the argument against them, I just don't understand how they would fall behind some two loss teams. That's...odd to me.
