Out of the first 6 novels, which one would rank as your personal favorite?

I would have to say the last one. I am liking the darker part of the series.

I still have to go with Azkaban. I like how it started getting more into Harry's family background, and I think it's perfectly plotted with the time travel device.

Azkaban is still my favourite as well. I liked how the challenge Harry & co. had to face was different from the first two (no Voldy), and still, the story was compact and concentrated on the essential. The last two, and also GoF to an extent, somewhat suffer from their length; there is stuff that could have been dropped, or at least told much shorter. (Does anybody else feel that, for example, the nastiness of Umbridge would have got through with a little less repetition?)

I think the reason I liked GoF the best is because of its placement in the series. In the previous three, the characters were dealing with getting to know each other, the school, basically just being introduced to the universe of magic. In the following books, the series really becomes focused more on the threat of the real Voldemort (not a spirit, memory or one of his henchmen) and it's nonstop drama and action. Don't get me wrong, I love all of the books, but I think I enjoy Goblet because it's the most fun. It's the calm before the storm. Rowling gave us good mysteries and thrillers, now she gives us a chance to just sit back and enjoy the world of Harry Potter before everything gets turned upside-down.
