In SCIENCE news today.....

A report that the Human race will split into two different species (http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/008200710261340.htm)

London (PTI): In 1900, experts made predictions for the 20th century. They got much wrong but a lot right -- housework never became fun, but we did get the internet and the nuclear bomb.

If the accuracy of 1900 is a guide, researchers in Britain might be right this time. They have predicted that the human race may be split into two different species in 100,000 years' time -- an attractive, intelligent ruling elite and an underclass of dim-witted, ugly goblin-like creatures.

"The human race would reach its physical peak by the year 3000. People would become choosier about their sexual partners, causing humanity to divide into sub-species. The descendants of the genetic upper class will be tall, slim, healthy and attractive from the underclass humans.

"But in the near future, humans will evolve in 1,000 years into giants between six ft and seven ft tall while life-spans will have extended to 120 years.

"Men will have symmetrical facial features, deeper voices and bigger penises. Women will all have glossy hair, smooth hairless skin, large eyes and pert breasts," according to lead researcher Oliver Curry of London School of Economics.

Curry has also said that 10,000 years later reliance on technology will have begun to dramatically change the appearance of the human race.

"While science and technology have the potential to create an ideal habitat for humanity over the next millennium, there is a possibility of a monumental genetic hangover over the subsequent millennia due to an over-reliance of technology reducing our natural capacity to resist disease, or our evolved ability to get along with each other," he said in his report for TV channel 'Bravo'.

So totally fucked up. I remeber a story a few years ago in the news about disciplinary actions against a kid bringing a ONE INCH GI Joe gun to school. The school administrators defended their actions by saying zero tolerance means ZERO TOLERANCE and their policies do not allow them to make discretionary calls.

My thought is... if the policy is an absolute as to allow zero discretion or interpretation, do we really need to be paying you six-figure salaries to not think and simply recite a poorly written policy?

Al-Dog
12-18-2007, 09:56 AM
What I find amazing is that despite these zero tolerance laws and signs clearly posted that guns are not allowed, we still have people bring firearms onto school grounds and shopping malls and killing large numbers of random citizens. It’s almost as if the gunmen where disregarding the signs.:Dunno:

Computer from 65 BC found (http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2006/nov/30/uknews)

A 2,000-year-old mechanical computer salvaged from a Roman shipwreck has astounded scientists who have finally unravelled the secrets of how the sophisticated device works.

The machine was lost among cargo in 65BC when the ship carrying it sank in 42m of water off the coast of the Greek island of Antikythera. By chance, in 1900, a sponge diver called Elias Stadiatos discovered the wreck and recovered statues and other artifacts from the site.

Al-dog said it best right there... and yes its happened before. Stupid people hinge their faith on forcing an answer they want to hear from God and when God gives them another answer of logic and reasoning, they blame the death on lack of faith when they just werent listening.

the sick thing is that these two asshats said they have nothing against doctors at all.. they just wanted a sign from God.

ok then maybe the next time they pray for a cure for an injury or life threatening illness they should be praying for themselves to get healed from God not an 11 year old girl.

Great joke about faith in the almighty.
During a flood, a man went to his roof to escape the rising waters. A rescue team threw him a rope and he refused to grab it because “God Saves”. The river rose and the rescue team sent a boat to him and he refused to get in because “God Saves”. The river rose and a helicopter came by to pick him up and he refused to get in because “God Saves”. He finally drowned and when he stood before God, he was miffed. “Why didn’t you save me?” he screamed out. God looked down and said “I sent you a rope, a boat and a helicopter. What more do you want?”

Students suspended for skipping class to meet Obama
Wed Apr 23, 8:35 AM ET

SCRANTON, Pa. - Two high school seniors in Scranton, Pa., are paying a high price for their interest in politics.

Colin Saltry and Joey Daniel say they skipped gym class on Monday to rush over to a diner where Sen. Barack Obama's motorcade had just pulled in for an impromptu breakfast stop.

The two met Obama, and they say he even signed excuse slips for them to show their teachers. That didn't work. Saltry and Daniel got one-day suspensions for leaving school grounds, and Saltry has been ordered to resign as senior class president.

Saltry says it was worth being suspended to meet Obama, but he didn't expect to be bounced from his class presidency.

Assistant Superintendent William King says the rules are clear, and adds that if the students had approached a teacher about wanting to leave campus, they probably would have been given permission.

Like Moop said here, once upon a time... it's like winning the lottery every day for for 1,000,000 years but the universe holds a hell of a lot of lottery tickets.

In any garden-variety galaxy, there are 100-200 Billion stars. Let's assume 1/10 of 1% are habitable (single star, earthlike planet in a life-friendly orbit, etc.).

.001 * 100B (erring on the low side) == 100M.

Then let's take his calculation and apply it:

.0001 * 100M == 100 * 100
== 10,000 planets with intelligent life in our galaxy alone.

Sure, not a crowded neighborhood but, when you consider the number of galaxies, that makes us not so unique.

Lesbians turn on lesbians in battle of Lesbos
By Lester Haines
Published Wednesday 30th April 2008 11:15 GMT
Residents on the Greek island of Lesbos have declared that they alone have the right to call themselves lesbians, and yesterday launched a legal action against the Greek Gay and Lesbian Union (Olke) designed to wrest back control of the word from aficionados of Sapphic luuurv.

Local activist Dimitris Lambrou states in his complaint that the "seizure" of the island's name is responsible for the "psychological and moral rape" of true lesbians, and reckons the case will come before an Athens court in June.

Olke spokesperson Evangelia Vlam counterattacked with: "This affair is totally ridiculous. But if we are summoned by the courts, we will be heard."

Agreed. We at El Reg would like to suggest a compromise: Greek lesbians in future call themselves Sapphists; True lesbians call themselves Mytilenians, after the capital Mytilene - the name commonly used in Greece for the name of the whole island; and extra-Grecian lesbians beyond the reach of the country's legal system continue to use lesbian with gay abandon except when holidaying on Mytilene's popular Sapphic holiday resort of Eressos. Sorted. ®

Teen decapitated by Batman ride (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,373341,00.html)

Six Flags officials are uncertain why 17-year-old Asia Leeshawn Ferguson of Springfield, South Carolina scaled two six-foot fences and passed signs that said the restricted area was both off-limits and dangerous to visitors, spokeswoman Hela Sheth said in a news release.

Authorities were investigating reports from witnesses who said the Ferguson jumped the fences to retrieve a hat he lost while riding the Batman roller coaster, said Cobb County police Sgt. Dana Pierce. Police have declined to release the teenager's name until an autopsy is completed.

I guess he doesn’t need his hat any more.

I heard on the radio this morning that parents believe that the park is responsible for the death of their son and are going to hire a private detective to look into the matter.

If the initial reports are true, and he climbed two fences and ignored warning signs, I don’t see how they can blame the park.

The one here has a place to dump your kids, erm, a day care fun place. I think people are too serious about shopping to let the kids get in the way, I don't seem them often except at the cafeteria. Hmmm, what's really in those tasty meatballs?

That Aussie kid's parents should have their gonads fed to a croc so they don't reproduce any more. Sheesh.

KV, I live across the freeway from Ikea, so I have Ninja skills with getting in and out of there with minimal wear.

:headscratch: wait, no that sounds like I shop naked.

What I mean is, avoiding peak hours (ie weekends and holidays) is essential to have a good experience, and by all means shop there, it's Fabulous with a capital F! Great design for less. I've even had a couple sideways glances, if ya know what I mean! :eyebrow:

And the meatballs ROCK. I love their restaurant.

Man 'carefully planned' his chainsaw death after losing eviction battle with developers (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1087437/Man-carefully-planned-chainsaw-death-losing-eviction-battle-developers.html?ITO=1490)

The last resident in a block of flats due to be demolished cut his own head off with a chainsaw to highlight the 'injustice' of being asked to move out, an inquest heard today.

Desperate David Phyall, 50, plugged the electric chainsaw into the mains and attached a timer to the socket.

He then wrapped sellotape around the machine's trigger to secure it in the 'on' position and tied the handle of the saw to a table leg to hold it steady.

Mr Phyall rested the saw on his neck and waited for the timer to go off.

The Black and Decker chainsaw sliced through his neck in an instant but kept going for a further 15 minutes.

That’s the very reason that we must continue fighting for our right to own guns.
