Survivors fear that "The Others" may have returned when Sun is injured during a failed kidnapping attempt.
My comment: Don't hurt my baby Sun or there will be hell to pay! :romy:

I've never been one to say "If so and so dies I'm not watching the show anymore!!" because I always thought that was silly.... but....
If Sun dies I'm not watching the show anymore!

1. Sawyer is awesome.
2. I have another reason to hate Charlie.
3. I'm happy my Queen can continue watching LOST.

......the hell was that?
Honestly...what the hell was that?
I've never been quite so disappointed in this show.
That was, as far as I can remember, the most utterly pointless hour of Lost to date.
We learned that Sawyer was and still is a con man: nothing new there.
Charlie likes heroin and Claire, but hates John Locke: nothing new there.
Freckles likes Sawyer, trusts Jack, and still believes in everything Sawyer says at face value: Nothing new there.
Charlie is a douchebag: We learned that last week.
Jack and Locke love to bicker: Nothing new there either.
Honestly...was this hour just filler so they can stretch a story out longer?

Huh.
Well....I mean, it wasn't as pointless as last week but yeah, not exactly the most riveting thing I've seen lately.
I like how it played out though, the con aspect to it. There is more going on then appears at face value...at least it seems that way. Sawyer has to have some other motivations besides being a douche bag. Why is it that he took all the guns? Maybe I'm just being hopeful though....maybe I want it to get a little deeper then it appeared.
Charlie is a dick, but it's surprising that he really didn't want the drugs. Just revenge against Locke.
So everyone hates everyone....except Hurley and Sayid. They like each other. Maybe they can carry the plot from now on because god knows I'm getting sick of watching Jack and Locke stare at each other and Kate wandering around like the forlorn love interest that no one cares she is. Sawyer had some good scowls, and he apparently is playing a larger role in the story(?) now, but that's pretty much all he does. Oh....and no one likes Charlie.
Yeah....whoopidy doo.
Minion: Would voice interest about the timer reaching zero on the next episode preview, but considering how pointless that whole radio thing turned out...why even bother?

The timer reaches zero and then...
Locke wakes up from his nightmare.

I actually thought this was a pretty good episode. I really thought Sawyer was going to be conned by Cassidy in the flashback. I also thought Ana assaulted Sun to get people on her side. And I never thought Charlie was involved in the whole thing with Sawyer. This episode kept me guessing throughout the whole hour.
It's interesting to see why Sawyer(and to a lesser extent, Charlie) did this. It reminds me of the old parable of the Frog and the Scorpion. Scorpion wants to get to the other side of the river, asks the frog for a ride. Frog refuses, saying, 'You're a scorpion, you'll sting me and kill me." Scorpion denies that saying, 'Of course, I won't. I'd drown also.' Frog thinks about it and agrees to swim the scorpion to the other side. Halfway across the river, the frog feels a pain in his back from the sting and starts to drown. He asks the scorpion, 'Why'd you do it? Now you'll drown too.' And the scorpion replies, 'I had to, it's in my nature.'
Sawyer said this himself. He can't help but being bad. He'd condemn the survivors to being defenseless just because he could. It's an ego thing, or power trip, or something.
As for the clock running down next week, it didn't even occur to me that it was a dream, but I can see that. I still think the season will end with the clock actually reaching zeros.
Anyone else laugh when Jack and Jin found Sawyer on the computer and he said he almost had the high score at Donkey Kong? :)

That parable was also used in MacGyver once.
I also liked how Kate's mom was the waitress....

Wow, totally missed that. I think that's one problem with a show that so deep and intertwining as Lost, you'll miss alot of thread and tie-ins unless you actively keep up with it. :smirk:

I thought it was a great ep. Sawyer has been on the brink of doing something like this from day one. He just got pushed over the edge, or perhaps, he wasn't being paid enough attention to.
I loved the con game. Reminded me of 'House Of Games' with Joe Mantegna.
I didn't see the Charlie angle coming at all.
I hope next week isn't a dream. I've been waiting since they found the stupid clock, for them to just let it run out. I mean, really....what is the worst that could happen? The island blows up? There's no evidence that anything bad would happen. Maybe the "Dharma" people would send someone to the island to check it out! Just let it run out already.

The way I look at it this show has three types of episodes, exterior, interior and mixed. Exterior is where we learn something about the environment but little about the psychology of thecharacters, The Other 48 Days is one of these. Interior episodes are where we learn about the characters but little or nothing about the island and mixed is where we get info about both. The Long Con was very much and interior episode. As for Sawyer's motivation Kate nailed it. He is a kind of reverse Bruce Wayne. Both are motivated by the traumatic lloss of both theiur parents and the belief that, against all reason, they should have been able to stop it. But where Bruce turned his trauma outward, into a search not just for revenge but also justice Sawyer turned his anger inward. He's convinced that he's unredeemable and resists any suggestion that he's a good person. I think he was telling the truth when he told Cassidy he loved her, which makes his conning her all the worse. Yet in doing so he may also have saved her life. But he would never admit to this, especially not himself.
As for Charlie, I actually see a glimmer of hoope for him in that he refused the statue.
Anyone think Hurley may have inadvertantly been right with is "or any time" comment?

I was more excited abou the coming attractions for the next episode than anything else! I can't wait until the next one! But this one definitely needs a repeat viewing - I've got it on TiVo still, and will post more after a second viewing.

I thought it was a pretty good episode, just because I like to see Sawyer as a baaaaad boy. I also like that conflicts are growing between the survivors, everything was getting too lovey dovey for a while. I like how Charlie still looks ghoulish, even if he's not on the stuff he still isn't stable.
And as for Sawyer's motives...
...anyone else see him wink at Kate just before he launched into his tirade about "taking his stuff" and "meet the new sheriff?" I TIVO'd it, so I'm sure he did it.
I like how the show keeps throwing in characters connected to other people in the backstories. I was half expecting Kate's mom to be the waitress when I heard the southern accent. Not that I wasn't surprised, but I like the connection. It keeps up with the "everything for a reason" mantra. However, I also did not like this episode. I was BORED. The Charlie angle surprised me at the end, and I am grateful for that. Maybe he looks like a junkie because he is getting the mysterious sickness that seems to affect people on the island?

I totally agree. I don't know if people's mood swings and irrational behavior is a natural side effect of being trapped on a dangerous island after a plane crash, but these past couple episodes, people have definitely been acting against type. Charlie, Sayid, Jack, Sawyer. Even Hurley.

Interesting fact: (found while looking for my other interesting fact in the other thread)
Locke was looking at this particular book when Sawyer ran in to tell him about the posse.

I love the little things the writers drop into this show.
