This would be the most improbable event to occur since...um...this would be pretty improbable. As bad as their flame-out was, I highly doubt it's going to happen.

Dude, if they do this, I'm so on tickets like a fat kid on a cupcake.
Everyone has their tastes. For me, I hate this band with a passion. This is just another sign that the world is coming to an end.
Of course, I imagine Police fans will welcome this. (their reunion, not the world coming to an end)

Well, I hate Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails with a passion but I'll be the first to tell you that they are two of the more influential and important artists in modern alternative music. Can you admit that about The Police (seeing that it's equally if not moreso true about them and rock music in general)? ;)
I was born in December of 1979. Please, tell me about their importance and influence.

Okay. I have to be productive at work so I'll just point you to the Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Police).
I read the whole thing. I'm still missing their importance and influence. I see that they were popular, kind of, #70 out of 100.
You know what else was popular? This (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macarena_%28song%29), and this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mullet_%28haircut%29), and this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slap_bracelets), all these things were popular, but their importance and influence is questionable.

Riddle me this: would there be more than a token amount of reggae in rock today? What would Matisyahu be doing right now?

Sicks, I can see the distaste for Manson, and even not digging NINs music, but hating NIN with a passion? Trent's amazingly talented, and even if you can't get into the music, you must appreciate the layers upon layers of texture, and he sings about feelings that most people are afraid to admit that they even have. The guy's got talent.

That's my point. I can't stand his music but to say he's untalented or without impact would be ridiculous on it's face.
But I also overstated my hate a bit. I have been digging more of his stuff lately and have even started liking Closer, Hurt and Head Like A Hole retroactively.
But I still like Cash's version of Hurt better. Trent sounds like a whiny bitch when he sings it. Johnny sounds like a worn-out, old soul reflecting on his life and his regrets which is how I've always interpreted the lyrics.

If you take The Downward Spiral as being a loose concept album where the singer in each song is progressively more self-destructive and psychotic, it's probably not far off to say that he could be a whiny bitch. I like Cash's take on the song as well, for pretty much the reasons you articulated.

Well the ROXANNE thread line got me. I was listening to an FM 70'S, 80'S whatever station last week and it actually played Sting's solo version of Roxanne as performed on The Secret Policeman's Ball. It's the best treatment of that song. N

Damnit! No one is going to call me out on this one? Do you all honestly believe Matisyahu is the Second Coming of Christ? (Someone PLEASE call me out on the irony of that last question!!!!)

Okay...I get the irony. I just missed the post the first time 'round. Yeah...rapping rabbi is the Second Coming of Christ...irony. Check.
I was going to comment on Matisyahu after I hear a second hit song from him.

More on the Grammys, from IMDB.com:
Police Confirm Grammy Awards Appearance
Rock band The Police have confirmed they will open the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles next Sunday - fueling speculation they are planning a reunion tour. The hitmakers have so far refused to confirm rumors they are reforming to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of their massive selling song "Roxanne." A Recording Academy spokesperson says, "The Police join a stellar list of past Grammy Awards opening acts, which includes reunions and once-in-a-lifetime performances." The 1980s super group - featuring Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers - broke up in 1984 but reformed briefly in 2003 to celebrate their inclusion into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. This will be the first time the Grammy winning band have performed at the prestigious music show.

They were AWESOME. Great performance.
After that...wow. The rest of the award show just.... sucked.
It amazed me of just how much music that's out today that
I really don't give a crap about anymore.
Gnarls Barkley was very cool. The duet with Justin was good, albeit a little too show-offy.
The segment with Shakira was a DEFINITE highlight, her and her oh-so-honest hips. :Smirk:
Mary J. Blige was real and so full of genuine soul at one point you just wanted
to give her a hug to let her know everything was going to be okay.
But then came the rest of it. You wanted a pack of rabid wolves to attack
James Blunt and the Dixie Chicks and the entire Eagles tribute. The usually giddy
Red Hot Chili Peppers seemed a bit tired, ready to do their gig and go home.
And the audience was so made up of people that looked like they'd rather be
somewhere else, their reactions to the performances looked phoned in.
The evening was destined to offer a show that seemed so terribly uninspiring and flat.
And most of it lived up to that prediction. No matter who sang up there,
whether in tribute or as a winner, I just didn't care.
However, the most poignant moment for me was the all too brief tribute to James Brown,
with his cape man coming out on the stage with his gorgeous cape, but no James Brown to put it on.
Damnit. That got me choked up and teary eyed.
I didn't see that one coming. The rest of the show only made the point sharper
of just how much JB and his greatness will be missed. Such musical greatness
in music seems such a rarity nowadays. It feels like today's music has lost its
ability to exude soul and joy. I'm tempted to resign myself to the sad truth that the joy of living is a lost art in music. Nothing passive. Just a raw, vibrant, and infectious joy. Something to get excited about. Something where the artist is so into the moment, musically speaking, you want whatever it is he's got.
Too many artists are content to let the music stand on its own terms. Which in many ways is fine, but, too few are willing to want to BE the music. That's something else entirely. Shakira and Cee-Lo (sp?) (from Gnarls Barkley) both have a pretty good idea of the kind of exuberance music needs. But it is clear they both have their work cut out for them. Maybe with a little help from the Police, they can pull it off and get it back.

If you want people to be the music they perform then you shouldn't have called the Dixie Chicks blah - whether or not you like their style of music they have always written music that says something about their view of the world. Watching them perform Not Ready to Make Nice before the album was released was really an amazing thing to see because there was SO much emotion in those performances - you can probably find some of them on YouTube - also their VH-1 storytellers performance of it is pretty good too.
