Jack is back! Discuss here, but please don't discuss future events on the show (such as the promo for the next episode). This is a thread for the first two episodes ONLY.

Aiiieeeeeeeee!!!

He BIT a man to death! :D :D :D

"You. Will. Die. For. Nothing."

Still 45 minutes left. They've met the bar already. Here's hoping they can hold it for 22 hours and 45 minutes.

Oh my. I got chills.

Jack is still da man. But, something changed him back in China.

So far, the first two shows have got you wondering whether
the torture-happy Jack we've seen for 6 seasons
still exists. Has he finally lost his edge? Will he, like Hassad said,
remember it all back? Will he choose to want to?

My bundled nerves are wired after seeing this!
It's good to see 24 on TV again. To see crackling good TV again.
Like a breath of fresh air, it is.

The best line of the show:
(sorry for the paraphrase)
"I've refused to die in China and just die for nothing. Now, finally it's my choice
to die for something."

I almost broke out in tears when he said that.

Best action moment:
The double-kick to the chest of the bomber out the back train car window. Superb. :D

Second-best moment: Jack channeling back his skills learned as one of the Lost Boys. I know Keifer's a great actor, but when they told him to chew the scenery,
did you think he'd take it this literally? :D

I caved and watched all 4 hours. Stuff is running together.
Great scene, though, Traz.

When he bit that guy, I cheered. It was awesome. Beats the heck out of decapitating the witness in season two.

Chloe seems a little lost so far. I'm not quite sure why she's so out of the loop - was it just because she was so close to Jack?

I'm kind of expecting to see Behrooz pop up as part of the terrorists, seeing as he was handed over to them in Day 4 and never heard from again.

So glad 24 is back. 2 down, 22 to go.

That was a good episode. The lack of explanation of how Jack got back from China and what went on in his absence bugged me. But only till he started killing people and blowing stuff up.

Milo is back! :D

There almost seems to be an overload of major characters back on the show this year. It makes me wonder how many of them are going to bite the dust in the next few hours.

Shit...see...I was gonna say something but forgot that was in 9-10am! Damnit!
I will say that Chloe's ex is a fuckwit who needs to be gone.
So does Peter MacNichol. I mean, he's great, but I'm getting tired of seeing his type of character, even if he's pulled straight outta the Bush Administration. I'd have thought that Prez Palmer-Redux would have more sense than that after seeing what fuckwads like that did to his brother.

Okay, I'm gonna just dive right in here...

This is my first time watching 24 since the first season aired (there was nothing on last night).

Now the thing that first kind of bugged me was that in roughly twenty minutes (on the show's countdown), Jack had been released from the Chinese, shaved off a full beard, showered, got dressed, got briefed, got hauled to another part of town, got taken prisoner, and was tortured.

All that in twenty minutes? :headscratch:

Um yeah.

Then there's the whole every Muslim is a terrorist card. Yup, even the guy helping Jack is a terrorist. :headscratch:

WTF?

Then there's the suicide bomber with eight bricks of C4 strapped to his body (one brick can take out a building), but everything's cool cause he gets kicked out the window of the train? :headscratch:

Is this actually a comedy that I'm just not getting, or is this stuff actually trying to be serious?

Just curious.

I believe that the whole idea of a TV drama is to suspend belief and let it be entertainment. If it was supposed to be completely accurate, it would be a documentary.

I've learned not to nitpick... just enjoy the ride.

Do you, um, ever like anything?

Yes, I'm a fanboy on this one, but yes, even I see there are plot/time holes big enough that you could drive a mack truck through.

You pretty much either have to have some tolerance for them, or just not watch.

But really, Daf, do you ever like anything?

Just curious.

Yeah, quite a bit of stuff actually.

I'm not slamming the show, I'm just trying to figure out if it's like this all the time.

Frankly, once Prison Break, Heroes, BSG, etc. are back on the air, I'll be watching those instead.

I was trying some new shows out during the hiatus, and with all the hype surrounding 24 I decided to give it a try. I'm just trying to figure out if the complete stretch of time and physics is kind of a tongue-in-cheek that the audience is in on, or if it's meant to be taken seriously. You know, kind of like an in-joke.

Btw, as a side note, I noticed that in the previews for tonight's episode(s), that Kal Penn's movie brother in Harold and Kumar is playing one of the terrorist detainees at the Federal prison. That's why I'm asking about the in-joke stuff, because that's too coincidental and funny to have been done on accident.

Okay, that sounds better. (and truth be told, I'm going to be back and forth between Heroes and 24 as much as I can handle myself)

There are...well...plenty of "in" things involved with this show. Most of them go right past me and I read about them later, but as you noted, this does have quite the devoted following, and a good chunk of the "in" stuff is a homage to those of us who have been watching since the early days.

But no, I don't think any of the "stretch of time and physics" as you put it is meant as a joke. At least not that I'm aware of. I've always taken it as them taking creative liberties (slight to moderate) in order to keep the plot advancing.

I mean, really, would you want to watch the show any more than you do now if they took half an hour to show Jack shaving and showering? Would you prefer if they stopped for bathroom breaks, or to sit down to eat lunch?

I wouldn't, and I doubt you would either. That's the basic time stuff, as for physics? Like the guy with five bricks instead of one, etc? I don't know enough about that, and I doubt the average viewer would either. Like Trixie said, it's that sort of thing that needs to be suspended just a little, otherwise you're really watching the wrong show.

But to each their own.

And from what I've heard of Prison Break? There's a logic hole or six in that show as well, isn't there?

I don't know, I've never watched it. Definitely will someday.

Ayyy, babbling now.

Somebody start a new thread for the second night of the premiere.

Prison Break has a few holes, but nowhere near the stuff you're saying goes on in 24.

The nuke episode was kinda silly, for me, but I guess you guys that are into it dug it.

Heroes is on next week, so bye-bye Jack Bauer.

At least for me.

At least for me.

That is why the Lord gave us TIVO. You can have the clicker to my dual-tuner TIVO when you pry it out of my cold dead fingers.

For some reason, the first two hours to this season didn't grab me as much as last year ... although how you could top David Palmer's assassination, I don't know. Still, I love the changes they've made to Jack's character. He's been in a prison for over a year and a half, undergoing who-knows-what-kind of torture (it looks like acid burns on the left hand), and they're finally exploring the question of how long can Jack do the things he does without cracking?

In the past, they've shown good and bad Arabs/Muslims, so I thought it was a great twist to have Kal Penn's character turn out to be a bad guy. I think they're balancing it with the whole detention camp thing and Harry Lennix's character, so I like that thread and hope they keep it in there.

I do think Peter MacNichol's character is OTT, and I hope he has a little more depth to him besides being the bad influence.

More comments to come on 8-10am.

They were clearly labeled Brick Lites.

Meh.

I watched 4 episodes.

That was 4 more than I would have watched otherwise.

I'm going back to Prison Break and Heroes next week.

I return you to your regularly scheduled program.
